I only played the first two Trails of the Sky games. I didn't feel like I needed to have played other games before it.
I heard they are all set in the same world so playing other titles would give you a lot of background knowledge but it's not uncommon for games to just throw names of cities, states and historical events at you so even without that knowledge it didn't feel like anything was out of place.

I'm a fan, so I'm biased. It is a nice rpg series that fills certain niches no other game really does (anymore), BUT at the same time I can admit it's not for everyone and only appeals to certain people.

For example, all games are somewhat interconnected, same world (different countries for different arcs tho), same overarching larger plot, frequent callbacks and crossovers to each others games. If you really like diving deep into rich worldbuilding and lore, getting to know characters intimately in slower slice of life segments, etc. then it's for you. If you dislike "wordy" games and prefer constant action, it's probably not for you.
Oh yeah and the battle system is standard turnbased stuff, but with some light tactical/positioning elements and turn-order manipulation stuff to spice things up. Really easy to break and cheese if you know what you're doing tho.

The optimal route would be to play all games in release order, so you get all of the context, but if embarking on a multiple-hundred-hours long jrpg binge isn't possible for you, you can check out the first Cold Steel game as another entry point. It was the first 3D game of the series and as the start of a new arc only has minor callbacks to older stuff (if you like it you may still go back to the earlier games), tho fans of the older stuff will also say Cold Steel kinda brought in more mainstream anime trends with it's high school ish settings and light harem elements, so depending on your tolerance for that kinda "anime" tropes it may be a bad thing or a good thing.

Oh and as for Kiara playing it, I'm under no illusion that she would. She would probably even like it, but it's just not a great streaming game with its length and stuff

God tier world building on a scale I have never before seen in a JRPG, decent gameplay, great casts, but main story is kinda hit or miss, sometimes it's kinda generic and awful, but sometimes it's actually really good and interesting (very likely to flip flop between both several times in the same game).
Their main issue is that it's a massive, interconnected series made out of several games that are massive on their own, and god have mercy on your soul if you're a completionist.

nta nta, but kinda, I guess? Trails is a little (or a lot, if you take the whole series into account) more involved in the worldbuilding than the by-comparison simpler snes-age rpgs. What it does share with those classic RPGs is lovable memorable characters tho, for example.

If you mention Lunar, I guess you can give Trails in the Sky First Chapter a try, it's the first of the five 2D(ish) games in the series so it has that "retro vibe" charm. Just remember it's meant to be an introduction and kind of a slow burn.

Unfortunately, she has a severe case of muh graphix autism, so old games (basically anything older than the gamecube era she grew up with) will always be a hurdle with her (unless it's one of the rare few ones she actually has a nostalgic mamatori connection to so that it gets a pass, but even that is just a limited selection).
There are lots of great classic jrpgs she could enjoy (for someone who says she's a "lover of the genre"...), and as those games tended to be shorter it wouldn't even drag on too much, and make for good stream games. Chrono Trigger for example is a big and easy one I wish she would get on, but yeah, don't hold your breath waiting for it...
