Going by Kiara they don't get to really decide on the base model, they can on outfits.

What she tells is that either:

1)You audition for a specific model that is shown
2)You audition for a model you don't even know about
3)Some of the people helped make the model(assume she is talking about the older Gen like Suisei and Miko I think who came with their models)

If she was the first one then she did audition for the model, but it is essentially a case of taking the model you might not like or not getting in since you don't fit the other ones.
