Flash is a different product. Shockwave is much older and was used in a lot of edutainment CD-ROMs in the '90s. It's one of the original products of Macromedia. In the mid-90s Shockwave Player was created to host Shockwave content in web browsers and another company created a Shockwave competitor called Flash, which was quickly acquired by Macromedia. The main difference between the two was that Shockwave Player was a much bigger download and supported more stuff like 3D graphics and video early on, while Flash Player was a smaller download and its applications were working primarily with lightweight vector graphics. Another difference was that Shockwave content could be packaged in executable files while Flash could only be played in a web browser. So in a world with a lot of people still on dial-up, Flash reigned supreme on the internet while Shockwave was mostly used for multimedia and games on CD-ROM. Since Japan had much faster broadband adoption I guess web-based Shockwave content would have been more accessible there to people Beatani's age.

Totally false. You could download the Macromedia Flash Player and use downloaded .swf files to play games without a web browser.
