I would orchestrate a buyout of a part of one of the northern islands for a fortified military port, then. It would be my property, of course, but its intended purpose would be to act as a resupply point for the Black Fleet - and, if /morig/ would be willing - the base of more 'sensitive' operations. It would be primarily geared towards defensibility and shipbuilding, meaning things like hardwood, food, or other supplies would be imported from elsewhere to maximize the usage of space for the aforementioned two purposes.

Oh, and believe me, encryption is key. Information is one of the most priced weapons a trader can have, so unless you put in extraordinary measures for the word not to come out, things /will/ leak eventually. Welcome to /nasfaqg/.

Yeah, that's a good plan and location! You can be the landowner, but the Admiralcy would likely require that a Black Fleet official be in a leadership position in the installation, with some authority with regards to management, construction and military matters. The exact split of responsibilities can be hashed out in a lease that would satisfy both parties I think.

Well if you don't know much about loans then do you know about the business of port building? I know the basics of building a port needs piers, warehouses, cranes to load cargo with, etc. However if /nasa/ is building a port then we also need to build a city around it. I think the port would also benefit /who/ as well because sea travel is faster than land travel. Which means /who/ gets fresher produce and ice from /nasa/.

I would imagine that while loans are certainly offered by some /nasfaqg/ traders, they primarily deal with investments. Selling land, limited-time privileges, or issuing bonds would be a good way of attracting foreign investors.

If it really is a port and it is invested into, a settlement would build around itself naturally as the needs of travelers would have to be catered for.

Dear OGsuner, this is /nasa/'s Principal. While I am not WARanon I want to give you a message. I hope the stainless steel blades will serve you well in ship building.

Another thing I brought up is technology secrets. If our investor is a Sanalite then we can be open with technology as he'll follow the Grand Directive. An Admiralty could most certainly built and handle the precise military and orderly matters of the settlement. My main interest remains in retaining ownership and exclusive ability to supply the fleet, together with hosting all amenities needed by sailors and visitors to it. Since this is where the profit lies, together with the ship-building. There will likely be a nominal fleet docking/mothball payment, but its amount will be tied to maintenance of the port infrastructure and common areas, I don't expect profit from it.

/nasa/ Principal log:

The second day I'm not at work the entire station goes on strike. It seems many Sanalites are lost without the direction of being told what to do. This unfortunately is completely unhealthy for any space-faring species. I think its time to show the station tough love. /nasa/ station is going to have to figure things out on their own without me giving orders. Fortunately our essential infrastructure engineers don't need direction to know how to keep the station going. Its mostly the younger Sanalites who are at loss on what to do. Sadly I do not have the answers. The best advice I can give them is apply what they know to make a new purpose for themselves. This is what I learned from our trials without Sana broadcasts.

If /nasa/ is to follow through with settling this world as our own then we need more decentralized authority. I don't mean decentralized military power. I mean people need to figure out their own needs and work for themselves. This decision will certainly lead to controversy. Nevertheless I believe in Sana to lead us to truth. Nevertheless we need to learn how to take care of ourselves.

We're only good on boats, we don't have a real land army to speak of. Also, the chuubanite concentrations are only high enough to have an effect directly next to Mt. Mori, for the other 99% of the island, chuubanite-infused smoke has to be created artificially with smoke bombs and such. If you landed a large army on /morig/ while the entire navy was off invading /meat/, you'd to fight a population taking up arms to defend their country, nothing less and nothing more, though Mt. Mori itself would likely remain an enclave of resistance even if the rest of the island was beaten down. That's a reason why /morig/ would never send its whole fleet somewhere and leave the island defenseless, the Navy is a part of the island's defense.

well, they have a harder time swimming due to their bone density, also a rough time in colder climates due to how blood pressure words or something. I thought that the 300 pound shrine maidens of death were going to be dropped though.
If you are to invade /morig/ first step is destroying their navy, something that'd be hard to do, you'd need to harass them to drop their numbers or completely trash them in one big decisive battle. If you somehow manage this then the next step is organizing a naval invasion into one of their ports, they have well armed citizen militias but no organized state military, so resistance is to be expected more on urban guerrilla combat than direct confrontation with them, now, organized militaries are much stronger than citizen militias for many reasons.

We bleed quite slowly due to the thicker blood, so wounds to the head or the organs are probably needed to kill us instantly, it would take some time for a deadbeat to collapse from bleeding out from cuts and slashes.

>> No.21885931

>>21885322
makes sense, but isn't that part of the whole "durability" strength. it takes more to cut you, so of course your cuts will be duller and bleed out less, there isn't as much of a cut for the blood to come out of. if you are saying that it goes beyond being a natural result of being made of bone, however, then that might be a bit of a weakness. it would take more time for scabs to form, meaning that while the wound might not get worse on it's own, or might not pose a threat via bloodless, it would also take more time for it to get better, which could be a problem over time.
>>21884832
to be fair, if you look up "300 pound man" on google, you'll see what most people think of when they hear that. if they move at the same rate, and have more mass, by definition they are able to produce more impact.

So to kill a deadbeat easily all we need are baseball bats? What about concussive explosives that produce a shockwave explosion like dynamite? I'm realizing more and more everyday that /nasa/ is /morig/'s worst enemy.

>> No.21886336

>>21885931
Nah, it's more like the blood is thicker, more syrup-like, so it flows out of the wound more slowly, because of the higher concentration of red blood cells, scabbing is not particularly impeded. It makes deadbeats more prone to internal blood clots though, so cardiovascular health is a must. The obesity crisis in the 21th century is gonna hit us like a truck if we don't have Japan-tier diets kek.

Risuners are admitfully really shit at invading another country. Not that they would ever want to of course but being so decentralized with no standing army along with their low tech disadvantage would make an offensive impossible. However risuners have a MASSIVE home field advantage due to being able to take cover in the trees. Of course, but the real question is where would you cut the load and space? Gun deck at the cost of reducing firepower, which is /morig/'s strongest against /meat/ ships? Living space, which would reduce the number of crew on ship and (by extension) operating capacity and defence against boarding action? Material, which would make the ship generally more vulnerable? The decision's yours.
Another factor's that for sailing ships, "speed" isn't a universal stat that you can just put points into. /morig/'s square rig design makes them basically unrivalled when sailing downwind, but very slow and cumbersome when having to sail against the wind, while /meat/ sail is basically the reverse (although /meat/ ship is better sailing downwind than /morig/ sailing upwind). It makes sense that every country would have a secret weapon that can come into play if the nation is threatened existentially. >what kind of defense would they have against other nations attacking them
/meat/ isn't an offensive oriented state. It's defensive.
We begin with espionage.
/meat/ hates having to deal with direct conflicts. .
Before war is declared, our cultists and super soldier agents will do their best to stall or stop any attempts at war. Assassinations, misdirection, the works.
Should that fail and war is declared, if you havent clean up house for any cultists, expect your entire chain of command to disappear overnight.
If physical warfare is inevitable, here's our geography.
>Trenches
This one is obvious. You dont wanna know what lies beneath. In fact, even I have no idea what is down there. The Kaniko chapter that is responsible for watching over the trench is very secretive and their patron chuuba is obscure. But whatever it is, we have a mutual arrangement with our neighbour /vspo/ to use it to defend them too.
>Coasts
Coral. We boast having a large coral reef. Ships cant travel near the coast without proper navigation. If you get hit, that's the least of your problems. These corals have Dentata infused vtubium minerals in their bodies. Abandoning ship is not the wisest choice.
>Land
You will have to face extreme asymmetrical warfare and psychological warfare. The soldiers responsible with domestic defense are the strongest and well trained. Super soldiers rumored to carry multiple vtubium abilities from Mai's regeneration to Tsubaki's blood draining to Dentata's vines. There are not plenty of them, about 1 per division, but quality over quantity.
>Mountains
Rough terrain is always a bad idea to traverse. Especially when you have guerilla super soldiers. Plus the wildlife are just as aggressive. If we're desperate, we could incite a janny raid. It would be mutual destruction for both parties but the homeland can recover.
If things get too desperate, such as a massive defcon 1 total war, something lies beneath the mountains. Waiting to be unleashed upon Vtubia.

Also, forested swampland and tropical forest with heavy undergrowth due to its seasonal nature. This would likely be more significant on the eastern coast (which would be where enemy fleet arrive if they sail downwind of the trade winds dominating this latitude), so anyone not prepared for the tropical environment would have a bad time making their way past the mangrove trees and wetland, especially if they were weighted down by, say, armour and weapon. There were clearings between the corals and marshes, but those places were also where major /meat/ settlements were located, and trying to land in those place might be... ill-advised.

my thought was that others might take advantage of them while they overextend into /meat/ territory, but with how much influence /meat/ has over other nations, i figure setting up an invasion of enemy territory as a distraction to force /morig/ to pull back some of it's forces would be an effective way of neutralizing the threat. fighting on two fronts is generally a bad idea, but if they are so determined to fight /meat/ to the death, their dense bones would make for great material for the fleshwrights to mold to their liking.

Republic Owl / Pecпyбликa Филин / République Hibou / 共和国 ワシミミズク
Folk tales

1. the Sandman
In the darkness of the night during full moons the division between the soulpath and our reality is at its weakest, the sandman crosses into our world to pay visits, a wicked being, you may be doing an essay or catching up on the newspaper and he'll surely appear! With all the care in the world, he'll treat you nice, get you comfortable before he strikes, Huzzah! it's suddenly morning and you didn't get to finish that oh so important work you had... You sure do feel well rested thought.

2. Jabberwock
Oh what a brutalliant day it seets to be.
Let yourself clight and frill for a jab at it.
The Jabberwock won't be pealfed at me.
But I'll clack it up with my bladient Vorpal.
Just as the Unknown did so in a gest past.
Kris blade ot and belk 3 mountains, pal.

3. Ghosts
Some people seem to live lifes full of grudges and resentment, others just don't seem to care too much about death in the first place, some believe this causes them to appear in the world even after death, be it to carry out their grudges or simply to hang out a bit more in the world, maybe they somehow managed to find their way out of the soulpath, or maybe there is more to the mind of a living being that we think.

4. Hero Watson
the legendary usurper of time, who challenged the gods and made a nation for herself, a human hero of grand proportions, the Nameless being watched and spied with great fascination until she could learn more about such a character. From their many interactions with each other, it'd be easy to confuse them for sisters due to the care they give each other.

6. King of the mountain
King Monty, the charismatic hidden king beneath the mountains and hills, along with his court of eccentric characters, all old friends of a certain vagabund with no name, it is even said that she stole the crown sitting a top of the king as a gift for him.

7. Bean juice fairy
Access to coffee has been rare across the Republic, that is until the mass importation of coffee from Anya-Petra Global, with this powerful substance that allows one to mantain themselves awake even after hours of intense strain be it mental or physical, it has quickly become a beloved drink of anyone from the working class to those of the upper classes, it comes with a danger however, if you consume too much coffee you might attract the attention from a malicious fairy, it will implore you to keep drinking coffee even when you don't need it, addiction is a serious issue after all, but you could certainly be addicted to more harmful things, so there's nothing wrong with pouring another cup I'd say.

8. Everywhere System
Not quite a folk story, but commentary of how the nameless being would appear in multiple stories and legends across the continent even if she had no real business being there, generally having small lines and doing things that might be considered somewhat amoral.

9. Sunken city
In her quest to learn more from the world, the nameless being once found information about a supposed sunken city that was protected by the Lady of the seas, many attempts were made to breaking in and finding out more, but the Lady was always there to stop her, ultimately, the nameless being swore that she'd remember it, and one day she will pay, nothing much came from these threats however, thought they did manage to keep the Lady on edge.

>Kind of short this time, but it would probably be too long if I write until the next natural cutoff point.

The pale, serene moonlight continued to pour into the empty streets. As the majority of people fell asleep once again after the watch, Melisende emerged from the shadows of the back alleys once more. Despite her occupation, she was never really a fan of dealing with people - this lazy stroll across the pebble street gave her a brief respite before she had to dive into the investigation again. Even then, memories of what she had seen continued to bubble up in her overactive mind. A drop of sweat slid down from her skin... Perhaps Burton was right - this case was all bad luck. The more rational side of her felt it might be better to drop the investigation before she learnt something she would rather not... but the other side of her was curious, maybe too curious for her own good.

The blonde detective eventually stopped her steps, the capped head looking up to her next destination. While its location in the urban business district made it necessarily smaller than prodigy houses in the countryside, it was still a rather luxurious building. Neat rows of red bricks lined the wall, interrupted and reinforced by straight pillars that defined the shape of the building. Large windows between the pastel frames showed that it had three storeys, but the drapes concealed every single one of the dark rooms within. Several stagecoaches occupied the small, well-maintained lawn before the arched entrance, their refined embellishment suggesting the status of its inhabitants. Hanging before the building, the name of this establishment was bronzed on the tight grain sign - "Mai's Inn".

If the information she received from the fresh constable was correct, though, this merchants' hall was not what it seemed. Supposedly, hidden somewhere in it was one of the gathering places of the cannibal cult. Although not exactly illegal by itself, many of the gorier practices of a cult like this would nonetheless land them on the wrong side of the law. Then again, if they could operate in an opulent building like this, they either manage to evade investigation good enough, or they indeed had someone powerful in their ranks to protect them.

Truth be told, Melisende did not think that grey-eyed rookie was entirely reliable. If things went south, she would probably be more of a liability than an asset. Still, her lead was the only one so far, and Burton trusted her enough to guard the crime scene. Swallowing her doubts alongside her saliva, she lifted her hand and knocked on the door before making her way in.

The lobby was suitably well-decorated for a building like this. Polished chuubanite mounted on a chandelier illuminated the area with their magical glow, showing the sandalwood doors and stairway leading to the rest of the building. Mounted on the wall before the parting staircase, an exquisite oil painting of the elegant Kaiserin cast her masqueraded, smiling gaze on the detective, before her attention was drawn by the soft greeting from the side.

"Welcome to Mai's Inn. How may I serve you today?" Standing behind the counter, a brown-haired maidservant offered the blonde private eye a bow, her emerald eyes meeting the sapphire eyes as she smiled.

"Oh... I would like a room, please." The pounding from within her chest quickened as Melisende answered. So far, this place looked just like a regular, if well-maintained inn... then again, it was not like she could normally afford a night in such an establishment. Concealing any uncertainties that might reveal her true nature, she parted her lips once more and whispered the code she was given. "Oh, and a stagecoach to Okachimachi in the morning, if it's not too much a hassle."

"But of course." The smile on her face deepened. The metal-nibbed pen danced on the ledger, leaving behind a row or two of records before returning to its resting place. Then, the maidservant gracefully moved away from the reception and towards one of the side doors. "Please follow me to your accommodation... my friend."

She had passed the first hurdle, from the look of it... that, or the maidservant was simply luring her deeper into the building, away from prying eyes before making her move. With a polite nod, the detective followed her through the door, her crossed arms resting on the wooden handle hidden beneath her coat.

"May I ask if this is the first time you graced our modest establishment?" The room behind the door was not as well-lit as the entrance hall, but its plastered walls were nonetheless adorned with fine relief. Rows of barrels laid on their side on the wooden shelves, each with their unique markings befitting for fine wine.

"Ah, yes. A confidant of mine told me of this place. They said it will cater to my... needs well." The detective's answer on the fly was not met with further inquiries. The chambermaid reached for one of the casks leaning against the wall. Pulling open the head, the inside was not filled with liquor from the land of owls like the label suggested, but instead some kind of block and tackle leading into the wall.

"Indeed we will." With a gentle tug of the well-weathered rope, the faint squeaking noise echoing between the walls suggested something was being moved, and the otherwise unassuming plank floor to the side gradually sank into the ground, revealing a dark path down from the light. Once the ropes stopped their movement, the maiden turned to the detective and offered her a curtsey.

"Please, enjoy your stay..." The gentle slope was inviting, and the blue eyes could see some kind of doorway at the end of the brick corridor. With a deep breath, the boots began marching down into the unknown - it was not like she had any choice now. Once she stood before the shut door, the ramp behind her was pulled up once more, the light from above narrowing until she was covered in pitch darkness.

"... my delicious friend."

I do plan on writing lore on the festivities and communal activities /who/mans partake in to make the lore more diverse and better reflect what everyday life would be(after all even if there's conscription, most ppl would eventually return to the civilian world).

I've thought a lot about that, but I could never decide for something, Battle Hymn of the Republic is one of the first that came to mind, La Marseillaise too, the deal is I don't think taking a real world anthem and slapping it on is a good idea (althought if you really think we should then we could), A New Start is nice but it just doesn't quite sound fitting for an anthem either.

I imagined /morig/ as being a late adopter of firearms due to being highly traditionalist when it comes to martial matters. The lack of an organized military (and individual renowned warriors that would serve as de facto leaders being highly prideful) would also mean that the orderly "stand in a line and shoot" strategies that were common at this point in time wouldn't really take hold at a large scale. I won't try to say more because I'm not super knowledgeable on guns or 18th Century battle tactics.

That said, because of their training and the added bonus of Death Masks, deadbeats are experts in CQC and tend to be extremely skilled melee weapons users, which is advantageous for the guerilla warfare tactics favored in the event of an invasion of the island itself. Probably the most notable weapon still favored by traditionalists and found in the hands of warriors throughout the island are the signature black javelins. Throughout centuries of repelled invasions of /morig/, hundreds if not collective thousands of them remain sticking out of the ground on the coastlines where they were thrown to serve as a symbol. Otherwise, the heavily armored warriors are also known to favor big fuck-off weapons to be as imposing (and chuuni) as possible. In spite of the perceived impracticality, they know how the fuck to use them. Short swords or large knives are common sidearms, as well as the bayonet of a rifle. Shrine maidens are forbidden from using firearms. They use concealed blades, short swords, and the most skilled senior priestesses learn naginata. They're also known to pop out of corners or drop out of the sky to perform Sekiro-style assassinations. A senior shrine maiden doped up with a berserker mask and a naginata is probably the most dangerous single person on Holocontinent for about 15 minutes.

Ideally, everyone would have a music anon compose their custom anthem and have writer anons write the lyrics. But of course that's not very attainable. I would say irl march/anthems with modified or completely rewritten lyric would be the better choice for our anthem but it's really just a project for fun so any music that fits /who/ and mooms would do too.
Anthems really aren't that important for this stage anyways. It adds a lot of flavour to the lore but other aspects take precedence.

Addition to the general lore:
Republic Owl / Pecпyбликa Филин / République Hibou / 共和国 ワシミミズク

The Northern Campaigns:
The Republic has several logging camps and mines in the uninhabited Northern Tundra (currently /nasa/ territory). But these camps are curiously, all no more 50 km away from /uuu/'s border.
Way beyond the frozen tundra the spacemen now call home, lies the schizo wastes. Every year, they amass and cross the great ice bridge that emerges during the winter to the warmer south, in search of anything that they can pillage and burn down. For this reason, the Republic never went beyond the safety its mountains provided and only maintain camps and mining outposts that are only manned in the summer and autumn.

Despite /uuu/'s hostile(relative to the schizos) floras and inhabitants, the sheer number of schizos means that many would still make it through the strip of forest that separates the tundra and /who/. Therefore, the Republic established a network of fortifications all along its northern border and the most elite regiments man these forts and trenches. To thoroughly repel the schizo threat, additional Legions are mobilized to the front every winter to prepare for the onslaught and for sweeping the region of any stragglers after the main forces have been routed. Additionally, as a mutual agreement, the Republic stations troops near /uuu/'s north to act as pickets, also aiding and advising saplings in military matters.

Any other nation's citizens would shudder at the thought of an unending horde of raiders that puts their family and livelihoods constantly at risk. But the winter raids and the Northern Campaigns are just a part of live for /who/mans. Citizens in the less developed Northern provinces even see this as an opportunity, to provide services and good to the garrisoning armies. This aspect of life in the Republic possibly contributes to the rather cavalier attitude its citizens exhibit.

Notes: Anchoring >>21877891; May need /nasa/ and other nations that border the wastes to provide feedback on this. As this concerns the general lore of the Republic, I think it's better suited in the general lore rentry.

Not that guy but oh boy do I wish I had the brand of autism to throw together a proper orchestral piece. I agree with the notion that something that either leans into Auferstanden Aus Ruinen's whole rebuilding from the ruins of war, or La Marseillaise's almost jingoistic approach. I guess I'll have a look around, because unless someone comes around who can actually make music from the ground up then yeah adding or changing lyrics to a march might be one of our best bets.

On a similarish note, what kind of real world culture/region would be the best equivalent of /who/? I've seen people compare the environment to France a bit, and I can kinda see it at least with the southern half. I'm not sure if the stereotype of being crude and cavalier fits, don't know much about stereotypes of regions in France. It's both that we get schizo raids relatively frequently and the Republic sits pretty close to the wastes. Since some splits in the Western continent have actual land borders with the Schizo Wastes(or just so close that an invasion would directly threaten them) I thought that having the Schizos actively invade the nearby nations(only during set times, as the main wasteland is now separated from the main Holo-continent) would be interesting.

Unfortunately due to how the map is divided and there's only one clearly marked origin for the schizos it's kinda hard to "distribute" them, so each splits can incorporate them into their lore. Luckily(or unluckily) /who/ is pretty close to the wastes so there's a steady supply of em.

I've been wanting to incorporate the wastes into the lore because the whole siege expert thing plus horde is kinda too rule of cool to pass it off. But if you think it isn't appropriate then I do agree it might be better to be shelved for now until we figure out a way how to distribute the schizos.

Napoleon was known for breaking the line tactics in favor of columns and more advanced formations like he infantry square, facilitating their eventual decline. Generally infantry columns were utilized during the French Republic era, since their bayonet charges of motivated militiamen were murderously effective against disciplined lines.

Line tactics arose in XVIIth century from Mauritian Infantry units (when it comes to widespread use, that is).

>> No.21927306

Oh, and one more thing - the adoption of line formations arose from long reload times and inaccuracies of early firearms. The idea was to maximize firepower and also concentrate it in a single volley (at least for the first 1-2 shots) to attempt to break the enemy morale and cause them to flee. It's different when you're under a hail of inaccurate bullets that occasionally kill someone around you and when a well-placed volley straight-up decimates 1/3rd of your formation at once.

If /morig/ relies primarily on melee weapons, they would never need to adapt line tactics in the first place, likely operating more loosely as skirmish groups.

>> No.21927722

slight correction, Napoleon used column formation to march troops since he had cavalry and artillery fucking up the enemy so much the heavy columns were unstoppably moving forward. If the enemy line held, the infantry would rearrange to line formation to engage. The Brits learned this and engaged the columns (shot them), before they redeployed to line and caused heavy damage to the Napoleonic armies. British generals are quoted with literally saying "wtf is this column formation,
dude your men are dying!"

the smoothbore rifle is the reason line formations started falling out of fashion. Suddenly people can shoot faster. Old musket warfare was shoot a volley to weaken the line, then bayonet charge to finish. With the new rifles, infantry would practically melt before the bayonet chargers could even reach across the field. Which then led to trench warfare

>> No.21928137

>>21927722
>the smoothbore rifle
Anon... I think you made a typo...

The proliferation of rifled small arms is a great contributor to the decline of line tactics but breechloaders and metallic carriages becoming common are the bigger factor in how the fire rate of your average infantry increased dramatically.(read: Austria vs Prussia)

Look up how columns were used in the ol' Revolutionary days. Turns out that a barely trained dentist with a bayonet who just witnessed his comrades-in-arms die will eviscerate trained troops in a spectacular fashion. They were a great "mass attack" tactic when hand-to-hand combat was preferred, like in the Siege of Toulon.

Napoleon himself mostly redeployed them back into lines before engagements with a few exceptions.

It always assumes there's an inter-galactic civilization you can phone whenever something goes wrong. It demands that you be dependent on inter-galactic civilization infrastructure and follow their rules. But what happens when there's no more intergalactic civilization to depend on? You have to find a way to settle a new homeworld. Its going to be generations before the station can fly. The big mistake of ditching the Grand Directive entirely is that it means sharing technology with natives. We still need some rules in the Grand Directive to prohibit sharing technology. The big rule in the Grand Directive being challenged right now is the ban on mating with natives. The idea is that if you breed with enough and import non-Sanalites then non-Sanalites will take over /nasa/ via demographic replacement. Sanalites are pretty much real world humans with their genetic diversity. That said the Grand Directive's breeding ban will be challenged someday as more Sanalites are born in /nasa/ that are allergy resistant. They will eventually want to go out with natives someday. And eventually they'll vote to remove the entire Grand Directive if we don't loosen up restrictions. I'm not proposing to ditch the entire directive. We do not want to give nukes to our enemies. The fact of the matter is time. My estimates on repairing the station is at minimum a 99 year project. The reason for this is because we have to build infrastructure to build the specific parts of the station to make it deep space worthy. We lack the materials and the personnel to make repairs happen faster. Even with Vitubium research. The more Sanalites that are born on this planet then the more Sanalites will choose to stay on this world as it is their home. There are also many stations before us that have declared new homeworld bases. This is how we get space-trade relays from solar system to solar system. By the time we repair the station the world will have already been altered by our presence. This does not mean we will share technology with the natives. However the natives have already seen our technology in action with the launch. And many of them are inspired by it. While we will not help natives develop rocket engines they are already interested in making them. In a way we failed the Grand Directive already by allowing natives to witness our rockets.

>“Now Olga gave to each soldier in her army a pigeon or a sparrow, and ordered them to attach by thread to each pigeon and sparrow a piece of sulfur bound with small pieces of cloth. When night fell, Olga bade her soldiers release the pigeons and the sparrows. So the birds flew to their nests, the pigeons to the cotes, and the sparrows under the eaves. The dove-cotes, the coops, the porches, and the haymows were set on fire.
>“There was not a house that was not consumed, and it was impossible to extinguish the flames, because all the houses caught on fire at once. The people fled from the city, and Olga ordered her soldiers to catch them. Thus she took the city and burned it, and captured the elders of the city. A initial exchange of ships(and some personnel to train the spacemen how to sail & maintain age of sail ships) from /who/ and tools(or maybe just a simple trade deal for goods) from /nasa/, then an exchange program to design a shipyard(medium-sized, and strictly for civilian/commercial ships) in /nasa/ or /who/. The ships built in the shipyard won't be crazy advanced but they are a quantum leap compared to other nations(steam/chuubanite powered, with refrigeration, bulkheads etc, late 19th century to very early 20th-century tech.). /nasa/ can get some older merchant marine vessels and small gunboats early and would eventually have more modern ships(ofc /who/ would arguably benefit the most).

Now that I'm writing more while looking at the cover pic (>>21847789 picrel), I'm wondering if it's too much to ask for if I want to give some kind of primitive revolver to Melisende. (It's legally required for film noir private eyes to use a snubnosed revolver, after all)
It won't be a proper Colt or anything, probably just a flintlock pepperbox of sort. Maybe it's an imported good from vspo? Maybe they have a chuubanite pan that allows it to light up a few times before having to refill the gunpowder, so that Mel could get a few shots quickly before having to reload every single tube?
I imagine the mechanism would normally be too unreliable (IRL pepperbox flintlock guns have a tendency to fire multiple rounds at the same time) and cumbersome (you would need multiple long barrels on it, and the turning mechanism has to be bigger to rotate them) for military use, but vspo craftsmanship and her personal use made it just functional enough to be a sidearm.

Well /kfp/ already has Dreyses, which were introduced in 1840s and designed around the same time as colt patented his first revolver.

Can you do that with the 1700 general tech level?
Yeah, I think that the pistol is so customised that you can count the expected user base with hands. The idea's that because the turning mechanism (not sure if it would be manual or semi-auto, but it shouldn't matter too much in writing) has to be compact and light enough for concealed carry, the number of barrels is pretty limited (I'm divided between 3 and 4), and they have to also be cut short to fit. This results in the firepower of individual rounds being weaker (since the bullets will have a shorter acceleration length) basically, she'll be pretty boned if she got into a firefight with armoured opponents and/or deadbeats. Combined with high unit cost and the precise mechanism not doing well in muddy or dusty environment, its use is basically limited to close fight or self-defence against sfot targets in urban environment, namely where Melisende usually operates in.

>flintlock pepperbox
Hmm, I wonder. What engineering expertise I have makes me feel like in the pepperbox design, where you're just rotating the whole barrel and only need the hammer to aligned, shouldn't be terribly complex, at least not enough that period fabrication techniques wouldn't allow it. There are lots of inventions that could plausibly have been invented earlier than they were given the required technology and know-how, but no one had the initial idea.
It's not like a proper revolver where you need rigorous alignment between the revolver and the barrel (And thus more precise fabrication), a pepperbox is basically a bunch of pipeguns affixed to a shaft the user can rotate.

>> No.21969363

>>21969081
I think the issue's that it's a flintlock - the thing that needs to be aligned is not the hammer, but rather the pan that holds the gunpowder charge that would be ignited by the flint and, in turn, ignite the charge in the chamber. To prevent the loaded gunpowder from leaking out, the hole had to be small, which means the margin of error would likely be small (regular flintlocks also sometimes fail to fire because the fire just didn't pass through).
My guess is that for a flintlock pepperbox to be anywhere near reliable, the turning mechanism would have to be precise enough to align the pan with the hole, and unlike this world, RL doesn't have chuubanite to make the charge in the pan to fire more than once, so such a design didn't become practical until the late 18th century. Maybe some combination of vspo gunsmithery and /inf/ gears can solve that issue? Melisende might have to wind the gun and pre-load each barrel beforehand, but being able to spray and pray (with like 4 shots within half a minute) probably could save her skin against some deliquents and petty bandits.

Because pretty much all firearms before the invention and proliferation of percussion caps needed to refill the priming dish. So multi-barreled guns with independently fired barrels really aren't that feasible or make sense(how do you make a mechanism that reliably connects the priming dish with all the barrels?). Most multi-barrel guns you find that are made in the mid-1700s are all turnovers, which can be fired more reliably. I suppose the lack of turnovers with more than 2 barrels until the end of the 18th century(like this? https://www.topfoto.co.uk/asset/3843319/)) is due to the difficulty of making the barrels without machining tools that wouldn't be popularized until the early 19th century(plus there isn't a real need for them, just carry more guns lol). The relative lack of any survuing examples may also mean that they just aren't reliable and were very rarely made. But please do note that I haven't really consulted any scholarly texts and this is mostly just conjecture. A potential way of solving this is to have a system like picrel.

>> No.21969794

>>21969363
You make fair points, but looking at an example of such a gun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTz4aMle71I&ab_channel=ForgottenWeapons)) I don't think the problem was alignment. As long as you've got a tiny hole and your priming powder igniting next to it, I think the gun can fire (though as you say reliability can be an issue), but I think the real fabrication challenge would be the mechanism used to load the priming powder and ignite it.
Maybe then the chuubanite can give use a shortcut to easier priming, while leaving the rest of the design untouched?

>> No.21969960

>>21969794
Well, the one in the video is hand-rotated with a snap to ensure it aligns, so that solved the alignment issue (although the lock mechanism design is quite interesting). Maybe using it can do away with chuubanite use? (or at least have it that the chuubanite-enriched gunpowder doesn't actually ignite multiple times, just that the more powerful gunpowder makes each shot take less priming powder)

Some story behind /nasa/'s merchant. He is a close business partner with the principal. He was the Sanalite that took account of all the resources in /nasa/ after the crash. He helped the Principal allowcate resources efficiently. He only recently joined /nasfaqg/ officially. He's in favor of starting independent companies to manage resources better than centralized command. Which will end the strikes as they will no longer need direct orders to operate. Say what you will about the Principal. The merchant is fully aware of the Grand Directive and the punishment of exile if he disobeys it. So far his business plan is to use manufactured tools and ships as collateral. He's against using technology secrets and blueprints as assets. The company will manage the shipyard and port. The only government operations to the port will be policing, emergency services, electricity, telecom network, water treatment, and medical. I think that's the long and short of the deal.

Sanalite /nasfaqg/ merchant is also interested in taking over deals to /risu/ in supplying shipbuilding tools and pine tar. The less /nasa/'s government are involved with dealings the better.

/nasa/ became a police state again just because the Principal made a new friend that Mozzies spread false rumors of him fucking her.

Addition to /who/'s general lore, this is a sweet one:

Foodstuffs/ (or maybe under a new religious activities section)
Due to the Nameless One's affinity for sugary treats, festivals dedicated to the Nameless One are heavily associated with sweets. The 3 main types of sweeteners used in the Republic's traditional treats are fruits, honey and beet sugar. The bee farms in the Republic's rural areas provide the nearby villages with pollinators for their orchards and honey to sweeten their cakes. Although the Republic's refineries have massively improved the purity of beet sugar produced in the country, honey and fruits are the most common in rustic, ye olde style of sweets such as honeycake and compote because the association of beet sugar with a foul taste. Newer styles of sweets are made by patissiers in the cities, these kinds of sweets often incorporate new, exotic ingredients like cocoa, brownies and coffee cakes are popular choices for hoomans to enjoy with their caffeinated drinks.

Despite the Republic's reputation for a rather simple style of cooking, placing satiation and nutrition over presentation and flavor, its sweets are some of the best in the world. Weekly fares in towns smell like a giant pastry store, with cakes, biscuits and sweet bread lining the stalls. The public gardens and Fairgrounds in cities would set up carts selling various kinds of candies to the visitors. Even the most impoverished peasants would make sugary desserts during celebrations of the Nameless One. Making and consuming desserts echo the stories told in the scriptures, about the sweet gifts the Nameless One received from the beneficiaries of her knowledge and protection. As the citizenry regards these kinds of communal activities as signals of the progress and prosperity of their society, it's also about giving thanks to the good that civilization brings and to the Nameless One herself.

It's important to mention that we are also supposed to be a nation that's reducing and reorganizing it's own militarization due to economical needs and all that, having a direct threat to the north means that there's no real reason for that to happen, waiting for thread consensus on schizos is the better choice for now.

/nasa/ will share the shipyard with /who/ but we're not going to give /who/ blueprints for our ships. /who/ is allowed to build their ships in /nasa/'s shipyard. Since we don't have diesel the cranes will either be electric (which are not very strong) or hand-powered. Sanalites will only be allowed to operate electric cranes due to their complexity and fragility. That said having a second shipyard to build boats is still a massive boon to /who/. /who/'s main shipyard can be dedicated to military vessels while /nasa/'s shipyard will be used for civilian and trade ships. We'll even contract repairs using our tools to recycle old ships into useable ones.

Another thing to note is that aluminum boats will be absolutely worthless in warfare. Cannons will easily tear through the aluminum hull and sink the ship. While the ships may be fire resistant they can still be easily destroyed. Also an aluminum ship is harder to repair on the spot than a wooden ship. You'll need welding equipment to patch an aluminum ship while patching a wooden boat needs hammers, nails, and tar. /nasa/'s aluminum ships will be useful for taking the northern trade route where there's only schizo raiders who don't have cannons half the time. /nasa/'s gunboats once made can easily pick off the schizo's boats at a distance. The aluminum boats are made for their lightweight and speed. So their primary purpose is to transport goods as fast as possible. Keep in mind aluminum ships won't be available for about 10 or so years. Maybe 15.

Its a case of using what we have. We might abandon the use of aluminum ships for trade routes entirely. Though they'll still be useful for local fishing boats. Once we get enough capital* to make diesel engines we'll switch to steel boats and submarines.

*Capital doesn't just mean materials. It means the machines needed to refine the materials and form them to the parts we need. Which also means making the parts and the facilities for the machines in the first place. We're not building factories with a few hundred people. So this will be plausible two-generations later if we're lucky.

>> No.21990520

In regards to using power tools at the shipyard I think those will be used by Sanalites for now. Power tools are quite dangerous if you don't know how to use them. I think the other nation comfortable with using power tools would be /infinity/ at least. Sanalites can figure out how to work more efficiently with power tools under /who/'s instruction when making and repairing ships. /who/ might still have to provide the materials for building their own ships. And if they don't have enough then /who/ can buy materials. /who/ will still develop their own artillery as they have the know how to build cannons and ammunitions. Also /nasa/ doesn't have much materials to make lots of gunpowder yet. So we can't make cannon ammo.

Its still a good deal because once trained Sanalites with power tools can build a ship with half a crew rather than the fifty needed with hand tools. And perhaps the Hoomans who work there long enough will pick up how to use the power tools themselves. As long as Hoomans don't learn how to build the tools themselves I think we're good. Also most tools used will still be hand tools as we have no easy way of repairing power tools at this time. Especially with the lack of copper. If you have concerns then let me know now. We'll adjust the plan.

And just like that my plans for today are ruined because of IRL drama. I'll have to edit my story another time. Though I should copy and paste it to open office to make sure there's no grammar mistakes. I do hope that /who/ is okay with our compromises because of the grand directive. I still think another shipyard for civilian ships would be a net gain regardless.

The biggest obstacle is obviously the Grand Directive. I understand why it exists. Its to prevent other nations from growing too quickly to take over the world. Old men wanting to fuck squirrels and sharks aside, the economy is strong yet brittle. So /nasa/'s goal is to export goods that help with quality of life rather than export things that may be used as weapons. I realize I say this as /nasa/ prepares to make coal coke factories. This is also why a medium shipyard was chosen. /nasa/ will help build and repair civilian ships to help trade goods, specifically produce and ice, for all of us. Its also the responsibility of the ship owners to arm those ships with their guns. /who/ cannons will be better than what /nasa/ can scrap together right now.

I think the aluminum alloy ships will be restricted to local fishing boats, ice runners, and northern trade route ships. The ships will be designed with speed in mind. Aluminum alloy is lighter than wood. So in theory the sails can push the ships faster. That said the ships will have a handling problem. /nasa/ is currently researching how to make these ships safer by creating small prototype models. The models are very cute tiny ships the size of a rubber duckie. They float in a pool with fans that blow, simulating the ocean wind. The ships' steering are remote controlled with a controller wheel that has reactive tension. Meaning the harder it is to turn in the current, the harder the controller reacts. Remote control sailboat racing is quickly becoming a new pastime. Hell sailboat racing might even become a sport between /who/ and /nasa/. Thoughts?

>>21983653
The main issue I see with this backstory is the uncertainty of the timeline. How much time has passed between /nasa/'s crash, the station unfolding, and the present day again? This merchant setting off and happening to make it big is one thing, but to be of use to you he would need to have developed connections, started a company, hired workers, gathered a fleet of ships, etc. all by himself in the time he's been gone.
>The merchant is fully aware of the Grand Directive and the punishment of exile if he disobeys it.
How much of a punishment is that exactly if he's already settled in /nasfaqg/?

>> No.21998196

>>21997630
The rules I think would be simple. Rule 1: No motors nor paddles allowed. Only the wind and currents can move your ship. Rule 2: The ships have to be made from materials possible for life-sized sailboats. The materials approved so far are fiberglass*, wood, and aluminum alloy. Rule 3: The boat cannot capsize unless it hits a tidal wave bigger than the ship. Rule 4: This ship has to be able to accurately mimic naval maneuvers in real life. Including sail pulling. Rule 5: The controller has to mimic the steering wheel and rope pulleys of the ship, including mimicking tension of currents and winds pulling the rudders and sails. Each ship has to be inspected and run through rigorous tests to qualify for official races.

*Fiberglass is restricted to small class ships like kayaks and single person sailboats.

If you need a timeline its simple. /nasa/'s crash happened since the thread's creation. Which is when Sana debuted. The ship unfolded at the end of March, or the last month of winter/first month of spring depending on your calendar. Honestly I'd rather the Sanalite have history in /nasfaqg/ since the crash as a side business. But this is his lore. I'll ask him to see if he can clarify is lore here when he comes back. As for exile, /nasa/ will hunt you down to take their stuff back. The suits and bread dogs are not yours. They belong to the station. You wear these suits under terms and conditions. Also eventually the air filter in the suit will clog or break down. And those filters can only be made in /nasa/ station at this time. Plus it'd be stupid to turn on /nasa/ without means of sustaining yourself first. That said, I'm not ruling out the possibility of the Sanalite /nasfaqg/ merchant being one of the lucky ones with a strong enough constitution to breathe the atmosphere unfiltered.
