I can't defend Kanji anymore. Language should be used to ease communication. If both writer and reader are required to memorize thousands of complex characters to achieve this, it is not benefitial. Despite having one of the most educated populations in the world, there is an embarrassing amount of illiterate (by Japanese standards) people in Japan since most don't commit to memorize enough characters. Newspapers and magazines and Manga have been forced to utilize gradually simpler and more common vocabulary (or mostly furigana) in order to appeal to more people.
