Idols without dancing routines are just b-tier pop singers. In the musical aspect; complex planned choreographies are a huge part of why they became a craze in the first place along with the over-the-top MVs and concert scenarios, and the wall-of-sound that are idol songs.
Think that learning this dance steps gives some kind of foundational shared experience to their fanbase and are also a symbol of the supposed perseverance and drive for success of the idol.
Like, there are many people for what singing lessons do nothing or don't give them easily noticeable changes to their singing. But the effort they put into the choreo is something you can't miss and you know they have to grind it to get to a good level. The sweat and tears of the idol.
