The rule of thumb is now.

If you are capable of producing content, even slapdash and not amazing, do it now and get your reps in. Don't worry about it being bad in comparison to corpos. Or making sure it's perfect.

Get it published and out there, so people know you exist.

I have the trick for a single screen. Most streaming services can pop up the chat in a different window. Do it and pin it using DeskPins (lightweight freeware), it will keep the chat window on top of everything so you can both play and have quick looks at your chat without swapping windows or having to play in a tiny window.

Hello, I'm have been an artist for a few years already. I have less than 250 followers on Twitter (initially used for posting art but now I sometimes post there to update that I'm streaming). I started streaming last month, recently gained Affiliate on Twitch and gained some subs too. I'm not a vtuber, but I use a png of my original character. I play games and do drawing streams as content. I really like interacting with viewers and talk to them about stuff. It's been fun so far.

Any advice on how I should take it from here?

It is just peaking/clipping. 99% of the time all you need is a compressor and/or limiter, not actually new hardware.

If it's all half assed self service just mess around in vrchat or second life. I know some people treat it passionately or are just having fun, but a lot of guys seem to just want to be loved as cute anime girls. Streaming is probably not a very good avenue for that.

Here are a few low requirement games that are good enough to be on my harddrive right now.
Serious sam TFE/TSE, the shooter series (alien shooter/zombie shooter) also RIP, aliens versus predator, doom rogue like (it's fast paced), hydro thunder, flatout, not tetris 2, Unreal Tournament/Quake 3 arena (seems pretty obvious), Star wars racer, streets of rage remake, the house of the dead 1/2/3 (still fun without a gun), the typing of the dead if you want to humiliate yourself on how slow your typing is, turok dinausor hunter (not to be confused with the remake), WGR2 siege breaker, Ys.
And a few things I don't have installed but that pop to mind :
jaws unleashed, oddworld games, soul reaver, worms
typing this I realize the best PC games came between the late 90s and 2006 and most of them should run on your PC except things like Doom3 and FEAR. You may want to try painkiller.

Another firsthand example is one of my friends that I already knew before streaming is now one of my best friends and manages my finances/stocks for me. He's gifted me dozens of games whenever something good goes on sale and has taught me stuff like not to smoke out of aluminum foil. He's in probably most of my streams just because we're good friends. Whether it's playing the actual game that I'm streaming together, or watching movies/shows together at night, or as one of my few viewers who puts me on his flatscreen TV, I count that as "made it". I could have millions of views and dollars and unload 20 machine guns from a LA casino hotel window.

Do note, however, not anyone can engage people like this. You can actually get someone killed with good intentions. It has less to do about vtubing than social interaction and self-fulfillment as a whole. I'm happy that I can make people happy. You can't save them all.
