What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Serious question here, /asp/. Graduated 1.5 years ago with good credentials and living with my parents without needing to pay for anything. I have a job and got a raise twice so far, set to be promoted soon. Though I hate the 9-5 and want to quit to stream full-time (along with pursuing other passions that could lead to a career in the future) and set a deadline of 1-1.5 years to make something out of it. My parents don't 100% approve but concede I'm still young and it wouldn't be entirely career-ending, and they can still financially support me 100% for a long time. If you were in my situation would you do it?

Depends on your job really.
Are you a banker, engineer, lawyer, startup guy, etc working for top firms that could go up to 80 hours work week? The answer is big no. Keep your job and have streaming as a side thing.
Are you working a 9-5 job 40 hours work week with limited exit opportunities? Then you could quit and restart your career anytime you want.

I've considered if I ever started taking off, then I'd start tapering my work to try and maintain a similar(ish) income, but also be able to focus more on streaming over time.
Quitting to go full-time... I'd maybe raise it with your viewers. Say to them that you've been thinking about going full time. Maybe set a sub-goal to go for it?

>> No.21259860

I'd say go for it. Any industry job is stable enough that you can restart with a 1 year gap in CV even if you're at management level, and you're still fresh.
You already possess a top company name in your CV anyway so it won't be that bad even if your network in that company fizzled out in the future

Ideally you should not quit your job until the amount of money you get from streaming is equal to the amount of money you get from working at that job or at the very least, minimum wage.

>> No.21260047

>>21255370
All it takes is 3 streams a week of 3-4 hours each stream to incline no matter what you do at minimum.

Streaming longer hours for full time does not necessarily guarantee success. Even if you're successful, you'll have to make beyond minimum wage in order to consider even stopping your career to stream full time. In other words, dont quit your job for the streaming and keep it purely as a hobby. Unless you can guarantee you'll get to 1k ccv and beyond (which is mostly down to marketing, connections and luck to get there), you shouldnt be quitting since those factors are not streaming hours growth related.

>> No.21260751

>>21260047
>All it takes is 3 streams a week of 3-4 hours each stream to incline no matter what
this is bad advice that leads to so many permanent 2-views
if you want to incline you have to create content that people can reasonably be expected to find and watch. streaming can be used as an engine to create that content, but streaming alone isn't enough

Just did one myself a few weeks ago and fell short by 20 RTs. I found that if you don't have a famous mama/papa or friends with a high following (even better if it's an established VTuber) to RT it, it's tough to get past even 50 RTs. You'll resort to unspoken RT for RT and that's kind of falling into an echo chamber because they wouldn't be the ones who'll watch your content. Though if you'll be shooting for lower than 50, there's almost no point to just set the reveal as dates rather than number of RTs.

I'd argue it's still an okay way to start networking and gaining an audience though, even if it's just 3 to 5 people. As embarrassing as it is, no one cares if you fail to hit the goal.

Open commissions if you have time and pick a few mid-sized chuubas you like and make some fan-works for and mix in a few larger ones just so there's eyes on you. If you're starting off brand new as opposed to having a current artist account then you'll need to spread some feelers out in order for people to get an idea of who you are and what you do.

Sounds fun.
There was an anime called hacka dolls that had characters with numbers, usually they would be called hacka doll 1 and so on, but sometimes they would shorten it to the number and chan.
I don't think I need to say any more. You can probably guess who is the character and what's her name.

All the Nijimales were known the second they voice revealed for the trailer and half or more of them were suspected months prior when they debuted. I hope I've been helpful. Sometimes it seems like this industry is just full of numberfags and backstabbing cunts, so I'm trying to be the change I want to see.
From what I've seen, most managers don't deserve what they make, but I don't think I've ever seen one that I would call completely useless.
>>21302213
This is just my opinion, but I would define "falling behind" for an indie as total stagnation. Meaning if you're still gaining follows/subs on a weekly basis, you're doing better than most. I'd start worrying when that number completely levels off or goes down. That's when you'll want to start thinking about ways to branch out and mix things up, start appealing to a different audience.
>>21302548
Without giving too much away, the big 2 are a complete gamble. In every instance I'm aware of, they are looking for a specific kind of content creator with a specific character and lore in mind. You're auditioning for a role without knowing what it is, which is fucked and I personally hate it, but that's just how it goes. Best you can do is show off your range early in the video and hope that somewhere in there is the character they're looking for.
The smaller corpos are much more likely to watch a full audition video. Most of them also don't have specific characters in mind beforehand. At most they'll have a full generation theme.
>>21302596
Highly variable. Most chuubas either have day jobs or college classes (or both), so they spend 20-40 hours a week on that. The few that stream full-time tend to enjoy brainstorming new content ideas and experimenting in Premiere, Photoshop, VTube Studio, Audition, etc. If you're full-time, you probably enjoy working on projects like that and making new kind of content anyway so it's less of a grind.
For corpo chuubas, it's mostly the same. The only difference is some have projects with deadlines that they absolutely need to hit, but otherwise it's the same grind as anyone else, just with bigger numbers involved. I would say that the larger, innovative indies like Leaflit and Snuffy are just as busy as the bigger corpos on a daily basis. It's just self-imposed instead of corpo mandated.
>>21304485
>>21304779
Here's the thing about corpos, especially the big two: they are fucking pussies when it comes to doing something new. Everyone saw how big Luxiem got from fujobaiting, so of course that's all the male EN chuuba market is going to be looking for. They're so big that they have nothing to gain from trying to be innovative or forge a new path. They see easy money, they take easy money. Simple as. Until a new meta comes out of the EN sphere, or until a fujobait chuuba decides to break character with some success, I don't expect things to change.
>>21305109
VTubing will definitely still be alive. It is already entering general public consciousness, and it will only spread more as time goes on.
The first thing you want to do as an indie is build a core audience. Stream your best genre and win over the people that come with your personality. Most indie viewers check out a stream based on game choice, so if you try to go too wide with that, viewers will leave before they have a chance to fall in love with you. Better to have 50 dedicated followers than 100 that watch one stream and never come back

Pre-recorded content is great, especially if you're looking to build an actual community. The hard part is if you're streaming on Twitch but also posting VODs and other content on Youtube. I don't understand the tribalfagging when it comes to streaming platform, but it's real. Getting Twitch viewers to watch YouTube content, or YouTube viewers to watch Twitch streams, is irrationally difficult. But if you build a community on Twitter or Discord, it's a lot easier to bridge that gap.

NTA but it seems feasible, I thought I'd throw in my two cents since I've been following an indie in the FFXIV community who goes by Lucy Pyre, she used to lurk around in the shitpostXIV subreddit, blew up in the community with one of her videos, and streams decently often on Twitch and garners good CCV for an indie. I think that sort of thing especially helps a lot if you have an amazing voice for it.

Honestly, I dig the timbre. With the right model, I could see your voice carrying you pretty far. The one piece of advice I would give is to enunciate a bit more. Practice speaking like a newscaster and make sure there are clear breaks between words. Sometimes you have a tendency to run two words into each other, like when you say "I don't really have a script for this one", for and this sounds like "fordis". I've noticed it's something a lot of ESL Asian speakers struggle with, especially with "th" sounds. Practicing elocution can help a lot with that.

Have you ever watched eva? One of its main themes are about how we must get closer to one another and allow ourselves to be in a vulnerable position where we might get hurt to start connecting with others. I have not fully recovered from those thoughts that maybe it's all wrong, and maybe I'm just crazy or bound to be lonely, until I realized I was a year into having a best friend that I cherished and would speak to every day for hours.

The good thing about creation streams is that not only are they a niche and can be divided into careful, interesting parts, they can be later made into satisfying timelapses and shorts that have the potential of gaining lots of views.

If there are people in your audience don't get it, kick them the fuck out. It's your channel and your community. Don't give that power up to anyone, not even your moderators. you can't just say "this content creator i like plays games" and leave it at that. dig deeper as to why people would watch that person out of everyone else who is playing that same game. personality? they won the genetic lottery? they got a bunch of shitty gimmicks on their stream? tts giving validation when viewers throw money? maybe join that person's discord and ask the viewers why they watch that faggot play naruto ninja storm

using smart UV made it much better, but there is still overlapping, I'll just manually fix it. Thank god my model has very simple shapes.

my hidden super power is being very flexible I can bend in ways you would not believe. I'm not sure how it will help me but one day I will capitalize on it. maybe I should invest in 3D eventually.
other than that I also am fluent in multiple languages, have a wide voice range, have a creepy childlike voice (not loli just straight up a toddler). I'm not sure if this translates to streams but I've been told I'm very charming/charismatic and a natural story teller.

I can actually clap with one hand. Not able to show that outside of handcam streams, though.

Something that could actually serve as an upper hand would be my experience as an online English teacher for Zhangs children who were either shy or didn't have enough vocabulary to keep a conversation going, so I've essentially been doing speaking reps for a few years.

I'm good at telling stories about weird and wacky experiences. Sometimes the situation will devolve so hard when I'm talking about something and playing off chat's reaction that people will remember it for weeks or months later and still reference it.

I know that, I just meant to imply that he'd be less likely to show back up if we didn't mention him.
Anyways if you want my theories, he probably spent the last few days on a bender or something. His last update in this thread was being le quirky drug addict out to score some drugs, probably weed.
