1. Writing, just like any other form of art or self expression, takes time. And there are no shortcuts. Your first writings are bound to be shit, and they will improve over time. You prose matures as you do.

2. You have to read a lot. You'll learn what you like, what you don't like and you'll find your own style that way.

3.If you have something you wrote and you really like it but you feel like cutting it out, don't throw it in the garbage, just recycle it. Sometimes they will fit in different parts, or different stories altogether.

4.Ignorance shows, so if you're trying to write about something you don't know, educate yourself.

AA: archiving duties aside, HF is and probably always will be a cornerstone for all the fics in the archive with its story, characters, settings, and of course, the smut. I'd also like to add a special thanks to all the anons who gave me all the nice feedback about my story, both the plot, my prose and encouraged me the continue.

This is the first time one of my writings, fics or not, breaks the 10k word mark, if my calculations are correct all three chapters add up to 12k-13k.

At first I wanted this to be a story of 1.5k words each chapter, focused only on wild sex scenes, now I think I managed to tell the story using those segments.
I also think I finally understand why people write netorare, it's the conflict of love, which everyone can relate to.

I know it's not really the intent of the story, but I can't help but self-insert into this. Visualising the whole thing from Suisei's perspective, it's incredible how well the writing allows me to feel what she does, and imagine myself in the scenario. You do an excellent job at providing the right details to convey the characters, and despite how short it is, I found it easy to fall into the story and by the end, I was really wanting for more.

Honestly depending on your attitude to revising stuff you could still write even then and edit later; but judging by your tone I think you might be the type that makes sure stuff is good the first time when you're in the mood to write.
Nothing wrong with that, but given that your situation is trying to play catch up with your own creativity perhaps an experiment in putting it all out there first then trying to hammer it in shape with editing later might be something you want to try.

You know when you say that, I'm starting to agree. When I was writing that it definitely felt as though I had to make a choice between growing Lamy's character at the expense of Sora's relationship or vise versa.

That's also just the thing I think I was looking for but couldn't see. I am struggling to find a good direction for this story to go but putting it in regards to a SoraSei fic is actually perfect for some of the other ideas I have in mind but couldn't justify in the professional setting.

I went from writing almost daily to only doing serious writing maybe once a week, and I just started chipping away at my works bit by bit whenever I have a smidge of energy to write. It's honestly been helpful once I do a serious sitdown to write, especially now that I'm writing average 10k words for a story since I rarely find the time/energy to do a long writing session. This is even worse when you're an artfag, to be honest. The skill ceiling for both is high, but the curves are very different. Once you get to a certain level in writing, it becomes difficult to "see" progress from one piece to the next unless you're actively working on it.

When you draw, it's really obvious exactly what you got wrong pretty much as soon as you take a break from the paper/page. I certainly find writing much more relaxing, if anything.

Using "he said" "she bleated" still gets repetitive and if you feel you're using a word too many times it's usually true, synonyms won't change that. You don't always need to include the "he said" so long as the reader can tell who's speaking.

it's the best and worst thing about writing. It's really freeing in the fact that for good writing, it's really only something you can learn via experience. There's a lot of basics but after that, your voice is the thing that carries your work, not which comma goes where or how your vocab is.

But it's just as hard to find where you've gone wrong or, if you know, hard to correct that error. It can be hard to instruct anyone on how the best use their voice, you can't really mentor it as you can with drawing.

I have a friend who's an artist only and he just doesn't get it. He views drawing and writing as the same, if you make an error it's obvious and just needs to be practiced over and over until it's perfect. Writing is far, far more subjective and loose with what is considered "good"

Dialogue between two characters is usually pretty easy to format when you separate the lines/actions of one character from the other in a visible way.

"I really want to impregnate Mio with all my might." Person A said.

"I can understand that, but how about Aki? I want her to have my kids." Person B responded.

"I can see that, but I love me some blondes."

"They're good too. I love hags."

You don't really need to be told who's speaking here after the first two lines. If the characters have mannerisms or speech patters etc. it becomes even easier. When it's a three-way or more conversation you may need to be more obvious about who's speaking, but dialogue and actions should go hand-in-hand.

People aren't just talking heads, standing next to each other and reading off a script. They do things while talking - even the most autistic nerd cultures where people bizarrely don't move their hands or arms can't get around the fact that people often change expression with their tone. And that's of course if they're just talking - which isn't always the case. Often characters will be doing something else, another activity outside of their dialogue, even if it's just having a drink or smoking a cigarette.

Finally you have to assume your readers aren't morons. They don't NEED to be constantly reminded that somebody SAID something when dialogue is already separated by quotation marks. So for example, instead of:

Anon, dialogue tags like 'said' literally exist in order to make sure the audience knows who is talking. Using dialogue synonyms like you're JK Rowling doesn't make your dialogue better. Just stick to making sure it works first on a structural/high level (i.e. the dialogue is actually good for the scene, or the scene actually works for the plot you have) before worrying about repetition. Then when you get to looking back on your own work/editing you worry about low level stuff like that.
