What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Speech therapy. I had friends in middle school with lisps and/or actual stutters that fixed them by high school. Your lisp may also be caused by something wrong with your tongue and getting a minor surgery to correct it will get rid of the lisp. Really depends on what's causing the lisp but you should be able to get rid of it if you really want to. That being said some lisps are nearly unnoticeable and minor ones may actually be considered cute.

That's the point. No affiliate should be streaming at 1080p because they don't have consistent encoding and almost half of all viewers watch from a mobile or non-desktop device. This matters much more than you think even at mid/low numbers. I used to not know this and would constantly see regulars saying they have to go because the stream was choppy when it was fine when I checked back on VODs.

NTA but my friends all ask to watch me play games & I'm fine streaming to them, but actually streaming to the public feels different. With my friends I can make conversations & the like or listen to them talk a bit instead of just having to fill all the air on my own (I know chat can fulfill a similar function, but I need to reach a point where I have a large enough chat for that to happen first). I'm a bit of a boring person (WFH, rarely leave my apartment execept to exercise & do other necessary tasks, and don't consume much media besides videogames) so I'm nervous that I'll quickly run out of shit to talk about and get super repetitive. After a lot of consideration, i decided i just going to go indie bros. i might be forever 2view but at least its more comfy, honestly auditioning for company might not suit for my pacing after thinking a lot factor while im guaranteed to have audience but i dont have a lot of freedom & not to mention the expectation of having to please a lot audience and competition and such just make me stressed. i don't think I'm cutout to be e-celeb.
Having a small and tight-knit audience might be for me, not just its easy to moderate your viewer but i think you're free to act however you want.
but still what appeal me is the freedom to stream w/e game i want & using emu and not deal with corpo bs.
anyway for streaming which one is more comfy between twitch & youtube? i know a lot of ppl use twitch because its easy to monetize & getting audience but YouTube doesn't seem bad either, im newfag to this stuff so sorry im retarded.

Seems like copium because you realize you don't stand a chance to begin with. If you're only interested in "comfy" (boring) streams and communities of "comfy" (boring) viewers who will never speak, the site doesn't matter.

Welcome to the club. I'm pretty sure the consensus is to apply to corpo for practice/experience without expectations. It's important in life. Youtube is more easily accessible. If you want to appeal to non-gamers that much alone is enough reason for me. Simulcast is ideal but you won't be able to have partnerships/monetize. SwissedToast#1337

Oh don't get me wrong, I definitely like his stuff. When we discussed it in the thread back then it was apparent that the editing had become his primary focus. He doesn't do full or live streams iirc. It was a bit of a split between the fast food meme style and comfy in the background or on the TV stream. There's merit to all of the approaches.

Target audience is the most important question for streamers/content creators. A lot of us newbies see that the big fish all seem to be variety streamers and think that's the path that they took to success. That couldn't be further from the truth. Ludwig started in the smash community, Jerma made his name in the team fortress 2 community on youtube. If you try to start off being a variety streamer you're kneecapping yourself. When a corpo is asking you who your target audience is, that's probably the question they're the MOST interested in hearing your answer to. It separates the wheat from the chaff. Back in 2020 being a vtuber and targeting vtuber fans as your audience worked, but not anymore. You have to niche down and find a really specific audience that's hungry for content. Look up M/F or F/M or M/M ASMR roleplay. That shit is huge on youtube, I've seen youtube channels go from 0 to 30k in less than one year doing that kind of garbage. Think very carefully about a target audience you can serve, and hit 'em hard and fast with your best material.

artist posted new sketch and i'm really getting into it. i think i might actually drop the admiral for good. new model wont make me more popular but i want something that's really cool and personal and i'm getting there. I asked him to re-do the face once more to something that's inbetween the two, to give it a more "main character" feel, i think left one is too manly to fit the character i have in mind, but i'm in love with the outfit. This is gonna make a really good 3D model.

I'm also starting to work on a rough draft on my game, i'm planning to use RPG Maker to craft a story around this character that i can play on stream and VA for. I have decent experience with the program so i should be able to make something fun. I don't want to just lore dump, i want the viewers to be able to interact and possibly influence the outcome of the game / story. And i can keep adding to the story if people are interested to have "hero-story" streams that revolve around the model / character going on more adventures inbetween normal streams.

I'll still be a 2view but i'll at least have fun probably.

Updated +additional advice for growing from 0 on Twitter.

- Following remains the same - interact with multiple vtubers to try and get the algo linking you. Like, share, comment on their posts. Ideally, these should be people with streams you've watched so they recognize you (1). Do the same for the Gamedevs of your stock games. If you're an EldenRing streamer, then you should be following the official twitter, and jumping in the bandwagon when they ask community questions (2)
- Tweet CONSTANTLY. Aim for two or more EVERY day, more on days you stream. Memes, highlights, clips are all good. Also, any useful information you uncovered (glitches, etc).
-- Early announcements on your streams. If you're going live in the evening, post in the morning about it.
-- Scheduled tweets are your friends. It makes it look like you're more active, and gets you into peoples' timelines.
- Tag your (top level) tweets, and pay attention to the algo.
-- #vtuber, #envtuber, #vtuberEN, #[GameName], #[TrendingRelevantTopic] are good ones. They'll appear in the drop down list in order of trending, put the top trending one first.
-- Emotes, pictures, gifs all boost your tweet (slighty). External links are a malus, so put them in child comments if you want a larger reach

(1) - I had first comment on a large (ish) vtubers tweet. They have ~170 CCV, ~15/20K followers on social media. Normally, I get up to 300 impressions per tweet. This one got 3000, 300 interactions, and new followers.

(2) - 'Drop your PNG' threads and the like get a lot of stick, because they help the algo and ratio for the OP, and the early commenters (see (1)), but they also get your name out there. If you have insightful comments (you probably don't, but still), then they can get extra eyes on you. I QRTed an Event announcement, and said "Here's why I'm not streaming tonight guys, wish me luck!"... And they retweeted me. To their audience of 150k followers. It completely threw my analytics page out of whack (again).

I suppose the only other new bit of advice I'd add is copy what Sloth and Leta have been doing - comment on all sorts of things, and disregard numbers. Share your opinion on pieces, ask if you can join in, tell them their hair smells nice. You'll get more eyes on you, appear in timelines, and get boosted interactions

YOU GET ONE LINK
Set your homepage to your Twitch. Not your throne. Not your Tiktok. Not your Carrd.
Your twitch.
Make it so that people only have to click twice (once on your name, once

The TRICKIEST part is breaking out of the vtuber circle.

This might seem counterproductive, but what I mean is you want an audience that isn't just other streamers. They are useful contacts to have, and build friendship with, and share your posts... But they don't necessarily help boost your numbers. Check out some big(ger than you) creators:

Ayuuchii has 16k on Twitch, 19k on Twitter
Shondo has 29k on Twitch, 16k on Twitter (odd one out, most people have more twitter than twitch. I think it's because people don't want to publicly UOOOOOH)
Krimbo has 6k followers on Twitch, 8k on Twitter
Sloth has 1k on Twitch, 1.6k on Twitter
Leta has 2.6k on Twitch, 1.4 on Twitter (odd one out again)

There's big differences in the figures, although bigger on Twitter normally means bigger on Twitch, it doesn't map exactly. Getting those eyes on you will help through.

I feel kinda jealous. The absolutely void of self-awareness must be a blessing. You can do whatever you want and have fun. It sounds like a fun life. I don't even mean that in a sarcastic way. Yes it's kinda painful to watch, but in the moment he feels like he's doing the best he can without thinking about anything else, and i kinda adore that. I used to have that back when i edited really cringe videos in 2009 and put them on youtube and i miss that time.

There's gotta be one vtuber you look up to right? Since I started twitch I've met lots of streamers who I look up to for individual skills. If it's my favorite I'd probably namedrop Pekora cuz she's the biggest numberfag and clearly tries to make it

1 week, aspies. You put in your audition application and wait 1 week. If you don't have a view, you've been filtered. Accept it and move on. I know Hololive's application says 1 month, but that's a lie.

Have you ever thought of doing a convention booth or join or host a panel?
How would you go about doing it, interaction-wise?
I’d probably just have a person or two that I know sit at a booth with custom merch while I’m on a vertical screen with a camera chatting with passers by. But that would only happen at a local con and only after I reach certain milestones like following, live-stream views, a certain percentage of viewers near where the con would be etc.

I've been thinking about having a friend of mine do the vtubing for me and I would be an artist/producer. Is there anything I should know in terms of being a vtuber producer?

You could try using your friends as co-hosts. I did that a lot at first. I think it eased me into the whole thing.

consume more media. tv shows, books, news, whatever. turn them into your own stories, it doesn't matter if they aren't true. stuff thats extremely realistic but with just a hint of absurdity usually make the best ones

I want to stream as soon as possible, but the artist I'm talking to currently is taking a while to respond to my messages. Is it worth it to get a cheaper model while I wait for my current one to be done just so I can get some streaming experience under my belt?

Depends how long your artist is likely to take.
Realistically... Yes.
