I think the major issue here is she had already contacted Korekore prior to this in regards to mafumafu stuff and Korekore's initial reaction to the news was talking about that and he was going to reveal that information regardless of if she contacted him that day or not. If he had spoken about that whole thing and she didn't contact him to clarify further and "prove" her innocence, he would've used those mafumafu messages to basically push that the two of them must've been dating because of that and everyone would've believed him because despite what people say, he's not just some nobody without credit to the things he says.
