Personally I don't think it matters but you will attract a different crowd if you go the female avatar route and it might get annoying. I really enjoy Jowol/PorcelainMaid, and I always get a kick out of him roasting new viewers who ask why he's a girl, but I can see it getting tedious if you're just using the avatar because you think its cute. But I also won't lie that thinking his (old VRoid) avatar was cute was what made me click on his channel in the first place. I think the same goes for other popular ones like Crumpet, SeanVR, etc.
On the flip-side, male avatars do seem like less of a draw, but with more of a genuine audience where you might get the occasional "anime is cringe/why are you a cartoon" person, but not a steady stream of "are you gay? are you trans?" people. I still blame the new twitch staff for the streamer/viewer divide. They are ex-twitter and amazon employees and caused some of the top managers to leave, because they didn't share their new monetized beliefs.
As for the thing with making friends, there is always the problem that with huge crowds behind a chuuba, you always have the backlash of the masses, which may scare off smaller streamers to even get near you. But Saru also has this arrogance around her, which may just be her character, but is still a deterrent for others.
It's not impossible to make friends, but she may be forcing it too much and that way you may only get yeasayers

I think it's fine if viewers/vtubers interact and are friends, friendship can start from anywhere. But it should definitely be initiated on the vtuber's side and they need to make sure they're not enabling a schizo.
