Most people don't follow it, but regulations on technology, research and communication in the last 20 years have gone from "not so much" to "a lot" and its speeding into "suffocating". In the last 10 years regulations on entertainment have increased. I don't think people would be running into the digital arms of Kizuna AI to get away from the world of Blade Runner, but to run away from the sterile hellhole of Demolition Man
Anyway, I don't think virtual beings are inherently dystopian. The digital world allows you to do things you normally couldn't and frankly I'm excited to see where this goes.
