Smell is combination of genetics and diet.
First, in general East Asians have less apocrine glands (located in the armpits and genitalia, these are sweat glands that produce pheromones) than Caucasians and Africans. These pheromones are digested by bacteria to produce the musky "body odour".
Second, Japanese diet is centred on seafood and whole foods, with none of the processed crap. They will definitely smell better than the typical American on fast food.
Though, it is undeniable that any human who does not take a bath will still smell horrible.

My guess is more based on the types that have a nasal problem like congestion or poor sense or smell.

It's funny, I've read and over that smell memory is the strongest fundamental memory, for example babies recognise the smell of their mothers because of the apocrine glands near the nipples (and milk ducts are just mutated apocrine sweat glands themselves), but reading this threw me back nearly 20 years to the changing rooms after gym class at the international I attended in asia.
