Hololive VTubers tend to be full time because they make such an enormous amount of money that they can afford not to have another job. (Some of them still have other jobs anyway because they're workaholics or something.) Nijisanji ones tend not to make as much money so a lot of them have actual jobs. So! I'll do my best to keep this bite-sized, but helpful!
Basically, the whole movie (or novel) can be summarized into two big ol' theories!
The first theory is that all of the events are true, but due to the mindset of the 80s and everyone's focus on themselves the murders all went unnoticed. The blindness is so pervasive that even co-workers don't recognize each other. (Which you'll notice is a theme, people not recognizing who is actually who).
The other theory is that Bateman's murders are just his delusions. A way to feed his inner monster, but he may think he's done them. His mind is so warped from how bland his life is compared to his awful desires. I mean, he nearly lost his mind looking at a card.
Something to note in general is the theme of having two sides. The front side is what you show to others. Bland, conforming, melting in with the crowd and not standing out. Every business man in the film has similar suits, similar cards, etc. Bateman talking about being nice to others and all this social justice nonsense to his "friends". But the back side is where true feelings come out. Like how right after the speech, he is screaming at the laundry lady. The darker side to indulge in vices and let out your inside feelings. Each character has a darker side. Doing drugs, having affairs, etc.
In summary, Bateman is a wacky man.
Hopefully that made sense, I sort of just blurted everything out.

That's because both Bateman and the people around him are unreliable narrators. The only thing we can be mostly sure of is that killer or not, Bateman is both unhinged and under extreme stress from the social pressure he feels to conform, notice how one of his first actions after "killing" Paul Allen is to assume his identity. Up until that point he'd worked rather hard to stay in his good graces because the idea of not fitting in was painful. He literally starts freaking it at the thought of not getting a table at Dorsia and proceeds to lie (upsell) the restaurant he can get to his drugged up side hoe because he can't lose face.

Beyond this, the film and book serve as a criticism of yuppie culture, despite being enlightened (well educated) elites, they seem to hold no real convictions and can wreath themselves in the language of social progressivism for the sake of clout but hold little deeper value towards the words they're saying.

The same is also true of how they discuss world affairs, genocide, nuclear proliferation, ect are just events to acknowledge rather than issues to be felt.

Their culture, their clothes and fashion and music fall into a cookie cutter template that's unexporative and hollow, they all slick their hair back, "take care of themselves", consume vacuous pop music/art and eat at the same curated restaurants. Despite being economically free, they have socially become an indistinct microcosm of society which is defined by what they're not (individuals) rather than what they are.

Even in the business card scene, they all fill the same role at the same company placing value in the most triflingly superficial of matters (the construction of their business cards an object that is inherently disposable and pocketed without second thought).

To that end it's a criticism of their culture because despite their knowledge and wealth, they're unable to see a very basic problem (Bateman's unstable mental health) in front of them or distinguish each other, let alone engage in meaningful relationships with one another, their society is congested only with simulacrums.

Tellingly, the people Bateman interacts with outside his business circle generally respond to him with concern or alarm.

Ultimately tho, he can be considered a tragic figure, pressured to fit in, prone to childish outbursts (his drawings) or worse, psychotic murders yet there is no out, no-one to confront him and either give him the help to stability his mind (and perhaps provide him with an earnest outlet where he can authentically be himself) or at least, prevent him from further damage and perhaps alarmingly, for the reader "he could be anyone" his superficially stable image and lifestyle means he really could be anyone amongst us.

Interpreting it as ambiguous is what makes it most interesting tho, potentially, because it creates a myriad of possibilities between "everything is real" and "everything was fake" which is exciting for the possibilities they open, the ways in which the text can be continually re-explored.

Though I feel like ambiguity is discomforting for a lot of people since it's contingent on the reader to either form a conclusion of their own, or more difficultly, accept contradicting explanations as simultaneously valid.
