Some ways the currents could go. I now realize that option A and option C are essentially the same, the latter just has the currents mapped out better.
This was a difficult place to figure out since its hard to fit a proper gyre in there and the option without a gyre (Option B) just feels... wrong.

These are just the options that do not change the climates. I purposefully avoided those options since the area is already established and it wouldn't feel right trying to rewrite already established areas. These 3 options 2 really are just as plausible as the ones I left out though.

as for the climates, Option A assumes the northern cold current is the one that is more powerful, while option C assumes the southern warm current is more powerful (the more likely scenario in my opinion).

As always with island climates, keep in mind that the ocean regulates, meaning that the climate differences on the island would not be as drastic as those on the continent. Also, keep in mind that being an island naturally comes with the area having more rainfall, in the case of the infinity island, especially on the southern and western coasts since the prevailing winds come from that direction.

>why no oceanic climate
An area with oceanic climate would optimally be an area affected by a warm ocean current, and none of the areas on the island are affected enough to warrant oceanic climate in my opinion. Closest would be the southern coast in option B, where its a cointoss between oceanic and humid subtropical, in my opinion the latter being more likely.
There are more current options where the island gets oceanic climate but those options would mean that the isthmus west of the island would become colder - meaning changes to the climate in that area -. and as mentioned before, I wanted to avoid these changes.

tl;dr I think option C is the best, but what does everyone else think?

Further away? I doubt it. The island is too big, I think a gyre would form either way. The island being further away should make the climate more like option B though.
Another way to achieve something like option B would be to move the island a bit northwest. This would in my opinion be a lot closer to what I suspect people are looking for in option B.

both options in pic related.

Thanks for your hard work.
I see it. C would be the 2nd best option. But is it impossible to have a climate layout like B where you have a continental and subtropical without the subartic taking over a majority of the island? Also you mentioned the island would get more rainfall since it's an island, would that mean there should be more river or lakes?

>>18816258
Also why would the warm water flow to the north and the cold water to the south in the first simulation?
and why does it look like warm water avoids the island, or did you address that and I just didn't pick up on it?

>> No.18818559

>>18817667
>lakes and rivers
I wouldnt worry about the rivers and lakes that much. Ofc there could be more but wetlands are also an option. The existing rivers can also just be larger, or the ground on the island in general could just retain more water.

>But is it impossible to have a climate layout like B where you have a continental and subtropical without the subartic taking over a majority of the island?
No, not at all. Easiest solution is to move the island a bit southwards. Also, in the Option C the southern tip of the island could very well be humid subtropical, I just chose humid subcontinental since it could also be that. Keep in mind that the biomes/climate zones are not monoliths. A humid continental up north will be different form a humid continental more southwards.

>Also why would the warm water flow to the north.
The current colors signal relative temperature, not absolute. The water that is flowing north or south is actually the same temperature at first, the water flowing southwards slowly warms up while the water flowing north cools down, its just that in the north the water is warmer than the climate would be without the current, and in the south the current is respectively relatively colder. What this means is that a warm current in the northern hemisphere extends a biome northward, while also increasing the relative precipitation in the area, while a cold current in the northern hemisphere extends a biome southward, while lessening relative precipitation. The extension directions flip on the southern hemisphere.

or simply said, a current of relative temperature difference extends a biome towards the direction where it flows.

>warm water avoids the island.
What do you mean? if it is what I think it is, a current is deflected here due to the island being a solid object underwater - the flowing water cannot flow though the base of the island -, and the base of the island extends underwater, as you can see from the colors in the map. Thus, the island being there forces the current to turn. Actually there probably could a gyre in that bay in the second simulation, but I just haven't drawn in in. The changes that arise form including it would not change things around though, at least in my view. Same applies everywhere else, although my arrows may be a bit sloppy here and there.

>> No.18820554

>>18820267
OH that.
That was indeed addressed before. The warm current flowing past the island is equally possible according to my understanding, but the problem is that having the warm current flow past the island means that the cold current would now flow next to the isthmus.

in the map without the island, the isthmus gets the warm ocean current. Changing it to the cold one would mean that the climate on the isthmus would have to change, and I wanted to avoid changing the climates of other areas when considering the addition of the island.

Now that Hoshimiya has declared that they are unwilling to negotiate for the disputed land, I am instead making a direct request to the Nuetralfag with multiple reasons on the rightfulness of /who/'s claim.
Arguments to support /who/'s claim over the coastline strip.
1. Hoshimiya was given the lighthouse island they asked for in their waters directly assaulting /who/'s strategic trade integrity, to mantain order and a stable status quo, the coastline strip is key.
2. Hoshimiya holds an inmense land border with /who/, such a land border would be difficult to administer and protect by Hoshimiya, in light of the situation, /who/'s bureaucracy is simply much more fit to administer the coastline strip.
3. Hoshimiya already holds an inmense coastline in addition to their close relations with /miko/, to take over the strip of land is overkill.

If /who/'s request is accomplished, we are willing to lend the ports to Hoshimiya for their naval ambitions in exchange of an alliance, /who/ will use their own naval force to assist that of Hoshimiya in times of crisis or if the need comes.

I hope we can all come to a satisfactory resolution.

As for what to do with /infinity/'s old land, it can be given to /nasa/, /rbc/ can then move to where /nasa/ was and finally the schizo wastelands can be reestablished where /rbc/ was placed.
/infinity/ gets their island, and the boarders don't need to be redrawn at all. And as a bonus, /nasa/ is able to move a little further south so they aren't totally frozen.

There was also the consideration of the equatorial current being more powerful than the northern one, but this was a minor consideration and did not affect the decision making as much as wanting to avoid changing other climates too much did.

Adding the island does change the climate of the surrounding area, but not by a significant enough amount to warrant changing the climate maps in my opinion. I think it would be mostly small stuff, like precipitation, or how the weather behaves in the area the island being there would lessen the effects of storms approaching from the east. For example if by any chance a hurricane/typhoon would approach the area from the east, the island would take the brunt of the storm, sparing the isthmus and the eastern coast of the continent from some damage. Not all of it, just some.

>Personally I would prefer if they got over the isolationist chuunism, and just be next to the other council members.
This would go completely against /∞/'s lore because they are isolationists and rarely cross point with other council splits. The only activity comes from those splits coming to /∞/. So the island sitution is not 'chunnism' but how /∞/ operates.

It's Hoshiyomia
That out of the way
1. That islet does not contain any naval ship, just a big lighthouse, one that would help sailors from both nations to travel safely to the coasts
2. That border was protected by our administration since the beginning of this world and is not negotiable. We spent thousands of years defending these lands from outsiders without any problem
3. Hoshiyomis' ancestors came first to these lands and were claimed by them, it's Hoshiyomia's birthright to have them
Adding onto this, our nation is a maritime nation, fishing is an important aspect and the big coastline helps sustain the population. Giving away that piece of land would mean hunger for the people

1. Such a large island is easily turned into a strategic asset as a port, whether it holds a lighthouse or not, it still is a threat to all involved. Regardless of that, /who/ does not claim the islet, for it is Hoshiyomia's rightful island.
2. /who/'s claim to stablish itself in the eastern coast is older than that of Hoshiyomia (sorry about mispelling it), in addition, as the age of the world is still unclear, i will dismiss this as nonsense.
3. While you may claim birthright, the age of the world is unclear and such documents may be forged. On the case of fishing, to claim Hoshiyomia's massive coastline is still not enough to satisfy the population is unlikely, /who/ also has offered to lend the ports for Hoshiyomia meaning that their effective fishing range is still the same, /who/ also holds a strong potato cultivation, meaning that Hoshiyomia can obtain cheap foodstuffs to help their sustenance.

Thus i will continue to push forth the claim for the coastline strip.

/nasa/ is pretty simple. They have only the station for now. The rest of /nasa/'s settlements are camps. We do have "escape pods". Escape pods can be used as a shelter for up to four people each. Pods are lifeboats of space. They have computers with survival guides, spacesuits, heating, oxygen, water boiler, bed, packed food storage, and a cooking range. Fortunately the world has oxygen so we can vent the pods. Downside is you have to bunker up as there's not a lot of space. Also without solar pods only have enough fuel to last 5 years by themselves. Pods are also virtually bullet proof. So they can serve as cover. That said pods only have rockets to maneuver in space. Once grounded they're stuck there.

If this is too OP for space tech then let me know. Pods are for surving stranded in space or on alien planets until you're rescued.

Going by the straight lore of the game itself, it uses dollars, but given the setting it's likely utilizing golden standard when trading outside of its own borders. It definitely has a fiat currency internally, though, given the inflation, price fluctuations et cetera. I can imagine it being an economic wild west. You can keep your golden coins... or invest in shares. Their value only goes up, after all... Ignore all the crashes. To answer >>18834239 I think mostly gold and silver, and definitely not 100:1, no historical nation had that exchange ever. The coins would be worth their gold content by weight, and given the sheer amounts of exchanges with foreign nations any golden coin would be evaluated and accepted at the price of the gold within it.

Going straight by the game again, the nation that'd be traded with the most is Morig in terms of trade volume, followed by Pekora general, Hololive general, and then Miko, Subaru, Gura generals. That being said, in this world it'd be natural for a lot of trade to commence in the ocean up north due to ideal trade currents; due to the nation being positioned at a strait, I can imagine that in the world's lore a significant portion of trade would also be done in the Nijisanji area.

The problem isn't just the lack of smoothness, it's mainly the fact that it can be easily distinguished as being made separately from the rest of the map.
I've tried to make land that would look like it could fit the style of the rest of the map, but without using the specific map generator it just isn't convincing due to the nature of how the program builds the terrain using what they refer to as cells. The generator has a way to make custom terrain, which will make it possible to make terrain that has the same style as the rest of the map since the map.
I only recently learned about the terrain editing feature today, which made it easier for me to accept the Kronii island, since aesthetic consistency was one of the main issues for adding new terrain.

I've managed to make everything look the same, but there's one issue I've run into. For the terracing option under the heightmap, it only changes the opacity of the shadows under the terrain, but not the thickness. As you'll see in pic related, on the left is terrain from the corpo continent, which has very thin shadows under the different height terrain, while on the right image is the terrain I'm trying to match to the original terrain, but the shadows are too thick, and I do not know how to change them.

Yes indeed, but also political reasons. As an example of this is Helsinki, the capital of Finland, which was originally just a small fishing settlement, but was later made into a town by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550, who wanted for the town to rival the city of Reval (modern day Tallinn). The newfound town was populated by resettled people who were forced to move there by the King's order.
Later on Helsinki was made into the capital by the Russians because they wanted to move the capital of Finland closer to St.Petersburg in order to limit Swedish influence in the area. This change also made the town grow into a city.
Nowadays the city is the most populous one in the country.

There isn't any standardized measure for topographic maps (most are relative) but on topographic maps for the world the shade of yellow you're calling highlands is generally 201-400 meters on maps I've seen with a similar color scheme, which would make our highest point less than Austria's average.

Hello /infinity/, I have come with a proposition for your island. First, I plead that you guys will at least be willing to compromise on the placement of /infinity/. All I ask is that you allow it to be placed in the western ocean so that it is near the other Council member nations. I understand that the eastern ocean is an old claim, but every other nation has at least been willing to compromise on positioning, so I hope that you guys will be willing to as well.
Anyway, here are my initial propositions for the Island. On the left is the meme GB choice that I originally just made for the joke, but there was a response that suggested using it if it was flipped around, so we might as well have it as an option.
On the right is my adaptation of the island that was made for /infinity/ by that one anon, but using the Azgaar program so that the style fits with the rest of the map. I've also flipped it around and rotated it a bit.

>>18857490
Nah, I did deliberately rip off Great Britain for the meme.
>>18860396
>>18880853
For the settings I had to change under style the heightmap to the light color scheme, then under Ocean I changed it to "no pattern" and had to change the color to what the map uses, and under coastline I increased the stroke width to 1, and increased the opacity to full. There might be some other small settings I've forgotten as well, so it's probably not perfect.
Also there wouldn't be a .map file from the original anon since the map was pieced together using multiple generated maps, so the original .map files would be gone, and not exist for the full map.

The top one is the best one imo. You remove the ahoge, simplify the torii gate somehow and maybe change the yellow to a cold color (probably green) and there you have it, I think. Thank you Neufag, I'll show this to the Kronies. However, about that placement, our northeastern placement submission would've very minimally affected cliamte and currents, if at all. I don't know anything about climates so I don't know if that location will affect it now. Perhaps we should wait on climateanon before accepting that new position, as it may lead to more problems in the future.

And speaking of compromise, we compromised a lot already in terms of size and geography (mountains, snow regions) so I hope you understand if some of us are iffy on compromising again, this time on positioning.

I was just about to go to sleep so I cant do a better analysis right now but at a glance the placement should not affect things too much.
/nasa/ area might get a bit colder as the warm ocean current gets deflected by the island. This may cause the tundra to expand southwards a bit.

The southern part of the infinity island would likely get oceanic climate, with a lot of rainfall throughout the year. The northern parts of the island could still plausibly be subarctic. With this placement the island would be well above the polar front and inside the polar cell. I'm too tired to double check my facts and go in detail but theres a high chance cold northern winds are to be expected, and depending on how much of the poles the map leaves out the area may be within the area that could be affected by the polar vortex. If yes, there's a high chance of extreme cold temperatures. take this with a grain of salt, or go read more on the effects of polar vortex fuckery, fascinating stuff https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January%E2%80%93February_2019_North_American_cold_wave

Option C is the most likely among those examples. I cant do you any placement suggestions or analysis' now but in general in that eastern ocean zone:
northwards means colder
southwards means warmer
westwards means warmer and wetter southern coast
eastwards means weird ocean currents i cant say much about now

>> No.18899000

Keep in mind that I'm not just considering thread relations with placement, more so than that I've been placing nations based on thematic relevance, whether that be the generation of the chuubas, or whether there's a climate that better fits thematically with that chuubas nation.
In this specific case, climate-wise either side of the ocean works since the placement can always be moved vertically to change to the desired climate.
So that leaves thematic relevance as the primary deciding factor. In this case, there's at least two factors that would make the western positioning work better thematically, while the only reason for the eastern placement is it supposedly doesn't affect the climate of other nations, which is a very insignificant factor.
The positioning on the west side both allows for the council nations to all be near each other for thematic relevance, and allows /infinity/'s schizo island to be fairly close to the new Schizo wastes, which is a neat coincidence since the close proximity allows a potential lore connection to be made there.

As for the isolation argument, the fact that the land is now an island already allows for complete isolation, since all that is needed to enforce that isolation is a navy to ward off would be invaders. It's not like geographic isolation is necessary anyway, North Korea is the most isolationist nation in the world and is in the middle of a peninsula.

This argument you're making was already addressed when someone wanted to name the oceans after the big vtuber CEOs. How is it relevant to /vt/? Because this is a world based off of /vt/ and not vtubing as a whole, so thematic relevance like generations is irrelevant. If /who/ started a war with /suisei/ over coastal territory, /infinity/ would be more likely to side with /suisei/ just to wipe out /who/ because of how obnoxious the kromei shitposter that's been plaguing /infinity/ is.
Don't assume that the world of vtubing as a whole reflects how /vt/ is.

Second, the climate in the original location was ideal since the northern land was already a tundra climate, and the southern land was temperate. Furthermore the climate anon has already said the island's original location wouldn't impact the world's climate in a significant way.

Finally, distance matters. taking from >>18898647
about wanting to be Japan, their isolation policies were undone by the Perry Expedition because they were able to directly travel from the Chinese mainland to Japan instead of trying to travel across the pacific. Being further away from the mainland makes it harder for other nations to engage. This works perfectly into /infinity/'s lore because only some of the most persistent shitposters from other splits come to /infinity/. Also being close to the Schizos wastes would be irrelevant since home bred /infinity/ schizos are an entirely different breed compared to the average one that populates /vt/ and they already have their own island.

Listen, as a kronie myself and mostly an observer to all this, I'm gonna go ahead and try to settle this. The climatefag already did the legwork figuring out how the eastern placement would work, and I don't think it's fair to make him do it again just to satisfy adjacency to the other council splits, unless he wants to pipe up himself on this matter, we'd have to wait for him to come around again in that case.

As for the size, it's an honest mistake that anyone could have made, and it honestly doesn't matter if it's slightly smaller or larger anyway, none of the other threads have complained about size as far as I'm aware, so I'm willing to recognise that it's not fair of some of us to kick up this much of a stink over it. I don't really care myself so long as it's equivalent to the average size. You've done good work with the shapes, even the meme, which I had a chuckle over, but wouldn't take as a legitimate option because literally just putting england on the map doesn't mesh well with the other fantasy landmasses, but that's neither here nor there.

All that said, this thread already promised the eastern territory before you took charge of the map, and it coincidentally offers the least disruption to the climate that we know of. You have to ask yourself if you're willing to break this thread's word, regardless of what /infinity/ does as a result, it creates a bad precedent on your neutrality if you arbitrarily make this choice against what most of everyone involved has already agreed on. Are you willing to potentially risk this whole venture to spite a handful of shitposters?

Honour /vtwbg/'s promise. Even if others have argued it poorly and more heatedly, that's the core issue. We compromised heavily already at /vtwbg/'s request with few complaints.

The fact is, it wasn't your choice to give /infinity/ apparently special treatment, it was /vtwbg/'s, you're in the clear, you'd just be doing what the thread wants.

I'll agree, this is a shitshow, and really should have been ended sooner, but it is what it is.

Those mean Kronies are demanding so much, wanting us to honor the promise given to them weeks ago. Won't someone think of the tripfag?

>> No.18905478

Can't we just put this to a vote or something? Have someone make a poll so we can just say definitively that this or that is what /vtwbg/ wants? All the complaining would stop if we just had that to look at. Clearly neither party wants to believe they're in the wrong, so let's make a new vote right here and just end this senseless bickering.

This rhetoric two or three of you infinityfags keep pushing where
>nooo EVERYONE already agreed to all this

is as pathetic as it is misleading. You have been contested at every step of the way, and as soon as you get some purchase, you cling onto it for dear life like it's your god-given right rather than something reluctantly conceded to you. /nasa/ is coming out of a long winter. So we have to act fast in the spring securing resources. We're dependent on solar for now. If we're lucky we can get a coal-powered steam engine going using the scrap metal we have from the crash. Agriculture is impossible outside the station without greenhouses. And permafrost makes quarrying without machines difficult. We could use the crater but I'm waiting to hear from word of god if we have enough fuel to move the station outside the crater.
