The insanity of japanese fans is pretty overblown honestly. Pretty much every corpo vtuber has had their identity doxxed already and anyone who wants to can easily find the general area where they live and murder them if they'd like to. Especially since they often talk about things like which stores they visit or what part of Tokyo they live in or other shit like that which makes it really easy to pinpoint their location.

The real reason is the companies need to have 100% complete control over the character's identity so the person behind the character can't carry it over when they go indie and can't use it to negotiate to join a better company while still under contract, because they have to keep their entire job a secret and can't even divulge it to other companies. They can be sued for breaking NDA if they ever admit to having worked for Hololive or Nijisanji or whatever even after graduating unless it's through lawyers and the company's permission.
