I know when Kizuna Ai and Kaguya Luna were at their peak, it was a pretty novel idea, it was like actually having a real dynamic anime girl performing for you. Now vtubers have gone from performers and actors to normal people just being themselves, only with an anime avatar. What's the difference between them and livestreamers at this point? What are you getting out of them?
And tell me if it's just me, but I get the impression that JP vtubers are more likely to stick to a kayfabe than EN ones. It also feels like (most of) the more successful EN vtubers are the ones who actually play up their character, or they behave in some way that's grossly different from their actual self.

I just think the 2d avatars look more interesting than a real person. All depends on the personality though. I watch a lot of no face streamers too so it’s nice being able to see expression even when someone doesn’t like showing their real face

The difference is vtubing didn't start from streaming and vtubing as an art has been long dead once most vtubers switched to streaming.
To answer your question there isn't much of a difference. Avatarfagging isn't anything new and it's been around since 2008ish.
Vtubing nowadays just helps introvert girls act like degenerates in front of their lonely viewers without the fear of being judged. It's no longer about entertaining your audience anymore.
