I originally had Kimi and Arypie as Moonfolk, but nothing makes those tokens except for mana-expensive, choose-a-type cards like Riptide Replicator. I was hoping the new Kamigawa set would bring as an actual Moonfolk maker card, but alas. I've changed the two away from Moonfolk to tokens that are actually supported. Kimi's now an Insect, since she's a moon bug. Arypie's now a Pilot (because UFO), a handy new token that the new set did bring along. Aria and T4n3 are Pilots now too. Do you care? Probably not!

I'm an absolute nobody and I'm very selective about which boards I bother submitting something for since I don't watch everyone and I don't want to send a meaningless platitude to someone I only know because I've seen their name here and there. but I still worry my lack of presence will upset or confuse, like the chuuba or other viewers will wonder "why isn't he on this one?"

Why would you shill a kudoboard to anyone who you didn't already know was part of that chuuba's fan community (i.e., in the discord if they have one, or your mutual acquaintances)? It's the kind of situation where if you have to be told about it by a stranger, you're not really one of the people who it'd make sense to contribute. And she's right that while there's nothing wrong with wanting to send a heartfelt message to someone if they're having a special day, some people (usually mods or fans) go overboard and try to get everyone and their mom to sign them, which then makes it hard to read them out on stream.

The easy way to fix the kudoboard "controversy" is unironically to have the boards be public and endorsed by the chuuba rather than by invite only and organized by fans. Wanting to surprise somebody is nice, but with the way kudoboards work out in practice, trying to organize them secretly and leaving their organization of fans/mods is just a bad idea. It would be better for the chuuba themselves to give people the option to send them public well-wishes on special occasions, subject to curation and their own personal choice over what/how much (if any!) to read on stream.

This is the most difficult part, because being real, most ofthe people who would write or draw something for one would want confirmation that the chuuba read their entry. So you can't do it partially, or else you have to pull a Nina and send out a DM to everyone you left out of the stream. I think the most reasonable expectation a community should have from sending a chuuba a kudoboard is to simply trust that they want to read your well-wishes, get a generalized thank you to the community, maybe tweet/retweet the art, and leave it at that.

I don't think they're an inherently bad thing but I do agree with pretty much all of her points. Really the simple solution is to make it public and remove any expectation of them being read on-stream. Do those two and pretty much all of the negatives are removed and it becomes what it's meant to be: a simple way for people that aren't comfortable reaching out normally to show genuine appreciation without anybody feeling left out, or on the opposite end like they're obligated to participate.

I think what really surprises me is how many people dislike kudoboard streams. granted I've only seen 5 or so, so maybe I got lucky with good ones, but I always thought it was fun to watch them go over the art and read nice messages. it always came across as a real positive vibe. now with so many people echoing the "how dare you expect a streamer to take on the chore of looking at your art and reading your messages" narrative it's really soured it for me. do this many people view getting a kudoboard as a chore to grind through on stream? Kudoboards exist for viewers to express gratitude or whatever other feelings to the vtuber they watch. I enjoy contributing and will continue to do so, and I don't care for vtubers who feel they have the right to weigh in on something that's done for the sake of viewers.
It's tiresome when every kudo is half filled with chuubas leaving obligatory messages just because they happen to share a couple discord servers. Should I feel sorry for you that you impose yourself on others like that?

She didn't make a scene out of it, it's very much just a case of someone finally speaking up because they were tired of people being unable to take no for an answer (and from what I gather it was less "[x] asked me" and more "[x] knows I'm gonna say no so he bothered my friends to ask me instead") and other people realizing they can agree without being shouted down themselves.

My personal experience is that someone had an event (birthday, I believe? It's been a while) where they read one on-stream and I made an offhand joke in the chat that I wasn't invited. The chuuba actually reached out to me to apologize like I was genuinely upset by it, and while I certainly appreciated the gesture but it really wasn't a big deal or anything. I really didn't care, if I wanted to say happy birthday I coulda just done it in their chat or on twitter or the like. But either way it did make me wonder how many people really did feel left out, and how flawed of a system it must be if someone really did.

I didn't think much of it after that but either way a few months later I started getting DMs to join quite a few boards and while I told them up front I'd only post to a few it started making me wonder about the opposite side of the coin. /wvt/ is big on community, obviously. But where does the line get drawn? If I create something for someone I know and watch regularly, should I do that for every board I participate in? If I'd rather just leave a message, am I allowed to just stay anonymous or will the chuuba and other viewers wonder why I didn't post? And what about the ones I don't post in, is there a reason for that? I mean obviously I know the reason is "I don't watch them often or know them well" but surely I could have taken five seconds to leave a simple message, right?

I just think that turning them from a well-meaning gesture into something you're expected to participate in hurts the premise and can lead to burnout in the long run, and we're just starting to see that in some people voicing their dislike of the entire concept. I'm not really sure what the solution to that is, since you can't really stop doing them either. Everyone has a birthday, everyone has an anniversary, everyone has some other events they want to celebrate. But it's worth discussing and I'm glad people aren't just keeping their opinions to themselves about it now.

bit late to the kudoboard discussion but the best way to do invites is to just lurk in streams for a couple of days and just invite the active chatters. obviously you won't still won't be able to get everyone (especially if the chuuba has had a drastic timeslot change) but it's the best coverage you can get without relying on admittedly shitty viewer networks
you could also put out a aggie or whiteboard during the stream instead, kind of like with bodega's birthday stream. it'd probably decrease the general quality of the art you'd get for your chuuba but it'd probably put less strain on artfags when all they're expected to do is a 15min-1hour sketch
