What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I've been streaming unsuccessful for 1-2 years but I'm trying to start tweeting to change that. It's rough because I actually don't use twitter otherwise but I'm trying to find out what works. Teasing streams etc. but so far no huge success.

I live streaming and i enjoy my stupid 3d avatar but everything else is tiresome.

My only goal is just to not give up and so far I'm doing good on that front....

Hello /asp/friends, my cheap camera is doing so bad that it works only for around 5 minutes or once in a lifetime (everytime i stream). I have been working on my character redesign for a long time (I have improved at art a lot), which means regardless of what happens I will have to switch back to PNGchuba. Is that stupid? I feel like there is no difference between idle vtuber animation in l2d and PNG. I assume that there is no way to make your model change your mouth whenever you talk throughout a program for free? (Or maybe I am just blind, sorry).
I would also like to know about camera recommendations. I heard Logitech is good. Right now I can't afford a new camera so I will have to save up for a long time, but I am used to it. (Most likely won't be able to get a new one until autumn)
With switch back to PNGchuba I have been working on channel points assets, so I guess that would be at least a little bit more entertaining for viewers?

Do you have a phone? Using one of the many apps (i use droidcam, it's cancer but it works) you can use your phone's camera for that instead of buying a new camera.

I will give you a fair warning, keeping the phone cam on for longer periods of time will nuke the battery potentially (decreased capacity due to extended usage), but i have a chink phone and i haven't noticed any issues streaming for a year.

Afterall the camera doesn't need to be good, it just needs to be good enough to generally capture your movement for whatever program needs it.

I think the OpSec guide could use a specific mention to only use fresh accounts for all games. Mauthe's guide in the General Pastebin kind of mentions it but it's easy to not think about because the section focuses on social media. Reusing game accounts has the same issues as social media but I think it's far easier to overlook and deserves to be mentioned as something that can cause issues.

What's Twitch's stance on streaming on emulators brehs? Been searching for answers all day long but it's a very vague ground. >> No.17711898

NTA but listen to the handling noises in her microphone, they're not as bassy as you would expect, her plosives are very pitched, and her voice is unrealistically high.
This is my Blue Snowball on the included stand, no downwards pressure added, moving it around a melanin desk (low friction), in the first second of her audio you hear handling noise, and it's nowhere near the level of this mic:
https://voca.ro/12aFKV67KWl7
This is how lightly rubbing the microphone sounds:
https://voca.ro/1eJiuZsI9aDF
This is how scratching the microphone with my short nail sounds:
https://voca.ro/17A1rTT9WzaK

Most crappy microphones don't really pick up lower end, but they definitely do pick up reverberation and room reflection, albeit very muddy and with no definition.
This is how plosives more or less should sound like (depends on the microphone you're using, the Snowball has a lot of foam internally, so they're relatively muffled):
https://voca.ro/14hScjIklvVW
Now listen to her first vocaroo at the 14 second mark, the small gust of air that hit the microphone should've made a much lower pitched sound. Even your cellphone can get plosives and their pitch is appropiate.

In conclusion, GFE cadet should not lie about her pitch correction or voice changer use. We don't care if she uses it or not, but presenting it as if it's her natural voice is deceptive.

I think it's improved. The rounder face goes well with the big boobas.

>>17711399
Sometimes it can sound like a voice changer when it's not, specially with a small recording, but if you listen for a while you easily tell just by how it affects the parts that aren't clear voice, like when there's some breath and texture to the speech or the voice in relation to the room. You can't hide it, you can mask it very well if it's a simple +1 or -1 pitch. But never perfect. Now when you use anything that actually tries to modify your voice to be feminine, not just simple pitch, it's instant, there's some very obvious aspect to it.

I don't need fancy tracking I just don't own a webcam and can't afford to buy one.
my only other option is pngtubing but it's too stiff and I don't wanna waste time waiting for an artist to draw me a png.

Yep, I think this is a given and not something anyone will complain about.

I made it Twitch follower based and it was a mistake (hard to track and contact people). I would strongly advise just doing it via twitter and mentioning that people should check out your twitch and follow there as well. Good luck anon!

Obligatory "not a streamer" but I do vtuber shit anyway.

Over the last few months my channel growth has completely stagnated. I mean -90% monthly sub count and I'm lucky if a video does the numbers in a week that they used to do in the first 24 hours.
I have no idea what's causing this, though. I'm uploading just as often, I've been spending more time and effort with editing than before. I've even been trying to collab with other channels to broaden my audience, but it's like Youtube recently decided my channel doesn't exist. (The Subscribed/Unsubscribed ratio went from about 20/80 to 50/50 over the last few months, so this isn't just a theory.)
I've thought about branching out to other types of content, but my last few attempts to do so were all met with lukewarm reception. Is there some Youtube secret that I'm missing? Should I start blogposting every day in the community tab or uploading shitposts as Shorts?

no. this does not apply to you. this from a retarded "study" that hootsuite did from their company's twitter account with over 7 million followers. this does not apply to indie vtubers with barely triple digit followers.

>go-live posts
by definition these should have shit engagement. the number of random viewers how will be enticed to leave a website and go over to twitch to watch a brand new streamer just from a go-live tweet is basically nonexistent. these are just reminders for your regulars and you should treat these tweets as such.

nta but smaller indies low hundreds of follows) have experienced this as well. I've seen better link-clickage after I started putting it into the replies. I used to do Image+Link, but I started doing Image with Link in replies and the same week and weeks after, people who follow me (mainly non-chuuba friends/acquaintances) started showing up a lot more often since it reminds them that I stream. This guy's 100% right.

If you want to stream to friends there's nothing wrong with that, have fun with it. But it hinders your marketability and stunts you real early. You'll hit the glass ceiling really quickly, trust me. There's nothing wrong with it being a hobby. If you're lucky you'll hit 5-10 viewers. If you're extremely well connected and charismatic you can get to maybe 100 and you'll be completely maxed.

If you want legit numbers get a handsome anime guy avatar like how successful females get cute girl avatars. Not enough people do it and the few that do get a shit ton of success if they look decent, and friendly and keep up with streaming regularly.

>> No.17765682

i can see that being true but do you have any further explanation why it would be that way? is it that you can't simp for a guy with female model? i have been streaming for a long time but i literally can't watch other people stream since i think it's too boring so i think im missing a couple chromosomes to understand the appeal of vtubs in the first place

>> No.17766438

>>17765682
Besides not being able to simp it's just... weird, you aren't really marketing for anyone since male viewers will just go watch one of the hundreds of other female vtubers that are actually females and female viewers will want an actual guy or actually just another cute female to watch, you are also missing out on just being a trap/femboy and just acting girly
It's hard to explain but the audience that wants babis isn't really there to warrant its existence, so much so that in the general community most people wouldn't even know the term

>> No.17766446

>>17765682
Males want to see the cute girls with cute voices, or a fun bro to feel like they're hanging with
Females want to see handsome guys with handsome voices, or to feel like they're hanging with a cute non-threatening girl friend

If you have a cute model but a masculine voice people will find a cute model with a cute voice. A cute or handsome voice will carry you farther than a well done model, but they have to match so they don't evoke uncanny valley. When people click on your stream they're looking for a cute girl to watch. When they hear a masculine voice they'll leave. If someone wanted to listen to a masculine voice they'd click on a male model vtuber.

There's no real appeal to any large group of people so the majority of people will get filtered and leave within seconds. Even if they would have found your content interesting they'll be out before that can see or hear it because they wanted something specific. If you were a male streamer with a male model people would stick around to hear what the fuck you're talking about at least because they went in wanting to watch a male vtuber.

But if you dislike vtubers you probably shouldn't be trying to become one yourself, though. You won't have much success if you can't watch other streamers and figure out why they're able to command an audience. And with vtubing your success is determined by two things: 1) How often you talk to other vtubers and your audience in a friendly manner through streams and social media, 2) How often you stream. All the other conditions are things that can be learned, but if you don't genuinely enjoy those two things and do them often you're unironically ngmi.

this is the rub that most babi chuubas don't get. it should be what your audience likes.

Be friendly and outgoing, already know how to talk to an audience. Take stand up or improv or whatever class clicks with you if you have to. Or watch youtube videos on it. Entertainer practices in general can help you a lot. Practice a lot. Network on twitter. Talk to people and be genuinely interested in what they're saying and drop by other streams to see people play shit and throw them a few chat messages.

Watch people that can talk endlessly and feel like they have high energy then talk to yourself all the time and copy them while you play games alone, or even just sit in a room alone and talk to yourself until you're confident you can do it. Read books out loud to yourself. Pretty much anything actors or actresses do will help you. At this point you can become a successful vtuber with most male models, and pull followers if you stream consistently. But if you want to do it as a career or apply for corpo:

Watch some male chuubas and see what makes them popular. Luxiem has a whole group to work off an entire audience of so they're different in a lot of ways but still worth watching. The 1k, 15k, and 150k indies are promising leads for how to grow at each level. You could play fujo buff games like twisted wonderland (phone visual novel) and probably pop the fuck off but it's better to just make an attractive male avatar you'd be happy with and make them a masculine mid twenties anime bishie and play whatever the fuck you want besides maybe FPS shit.

Try to send your designer character concepts of designs you already like of attractive male characters. If you aren't attracted to male characters in this range ask female friends. If you have no female friends ask gay and bisexual friends. If you have no friends ask /vt/ and pray actual women reply to you for feedback

Being genuinely friendly and/or bisexual is a gigantic buff.

A couple tips for anyone auditioning for the big leagues. Don't give a shit about formatting since I'm pasting this from notepad.
For your audition tape itself:
1. Make it five minutes. Be as close to this time as possible. Before play is even clicked on your video the length of time is going to be checked to make sure you listened. If you can't fill 5 minutes of video on your own already you aren't ready for streaming in front of a big audience. If you have too much, cut whatever sucks the most and show your strengths.
2. The first ten seconds of your audition matters more than the other 4:50, by a mile. Hundreds of hours of audition tape are received every day and 99% isn't watched beyond the first few seconds. Don't start with a slow intro where you say your name and introduce your character (there's a reason they want the backstory typed out in the description and not explained), start off with whatever your strong suit is. Are you a singer? Start with a 10-15 second bit of a song. Show a collage of clips from your channel that show off your gaming skill. Whatever your personal strong suit is, show this immediately. Also, if you already exist as a vtuber DO NOT MAKE THE AUDITION CHARACTER YOUR CURRENT VTUBER. Show that you're creative enough to come up with something different and new just for the audition and stick to it. Don't type out that your character is a goblin pirate with seven arms and then just talk normally like yourself for the entire audition.
For the rest of the audition:
1. Whether you currently have 1 viewer or 1,000 is irrelevant (To Hololive anyway. Other companies like Nijisanji care about his A LOT) remember that some of their best talents literally never streamed before joining. In some(read: some. not many.) ways having fewer viewers can be a strength if your streams are still worth watching since someone with more viewers can be carried by chat interaction to fill dead air. If your streams are genuinely fun that's key BUT be careful how you answer the question about audience interaction. Don't say it'll overwhelm you or something stupid like that.
2. Don't worry about the rumors that say if you're a male you have to say your favorite talent is a male. Be honest about who your favorite is and why. If you're a guy and your favorite vtuber was Kiryu Coco, say that and say why. It looks better than trying to lie about why a Holostar is your favorite.
3. Remember that collaborations with your genmates are going to be one of the most important pieces of content you make. Convince them you play well with others and don't clam up in conversation. If your twitter is all arguments with other people or bitter tweets, just delete it all or hide it.

whats the pro/cons to streaming youtube vs twitch? i barely use twitch (always hated its design) but unfortunately it feels like the better choice for finding an audience. does it depend on the genre? because while i primarily want to do games i want to also do movie watchalongs and (pipedream but) eventually cooking streams

do you want your growth to come primarily while you're livestreaming? use twitch

do you want your growth to come primarily while you're offline through recorded content? use youtube

you can do movie watchalongs and cooking streams on both platforms. there's nothing unique about either of them that makes it better or worse. i guess if your audience is mostly burgers you can use the Amazon watchalong feature and tell everyone to buy the same movie off amazon to sync the movie together if you really cared.

This desu. Historicall looking at both NijiEN and HoloEN, HoloEN seems to care way more about numbers than anyone else. Just about most if not all members of HoloEN boast extensive experience in content creation with at evidence that most of them are at the upper echelons of content creators in the community today whether it be from high sub count or a video that has a 1 million views or so.

Whereas NijiEN has a history of hiring people with low numbers as long as they have potential there. Mysta's past life has absolutely no big numbers to speak of and he's one of the most popular NijiEN members today which speaks a lot for their scouting methods.

The only indie vtuber that extensive uses their lore well is Kongou and he sets up massive D&D like games every few months with collabs from other vtubers and a huge community involvement in it.

So unless you can turn it into a community game thing, most people arent gonna bother. It also helps that Kongou never breaks kayfabe.

im surprised im alone in the opinion of liking lore in these replies, i enjoy a set up rather than 'this is just a succubus who is a vtuber' if you have a character to play. i prefer it being fast and loose, and i would save it until you have a debut to present it. also make it accessible, be able to sum it up in once sentence in your description.

>im surprised im alone in the opinion of liking lore
there are 2 types of "lore"
>the one you try to force on viewers because your vtuber is your personal OC
>the one you build with your viewers over time as they become part of your community and watch your streams
no one viewer who stops by 2views and wants to help you grow as a streamer gives a shit about the first one.

Pretend your audience is your boyfriend. Maybe exaggerate how much you like them a bit for some extra sweetness.
There's a lot of talking about your daily life and mundane stuff like that which contributes to the experience. Some ASMR streams where you pamper your audience lots are welcome too.
It's very interpersonal and maybe even unhealthy in the long run so if you fall down this hole you should be ready to commit.

It's good to be a consumer of the type of content you want to create. I personally find that shit cringe despite being told I have a nice voice, so I could never do it no matter how much it might help me as a streamer. Unless you already consume faggy ikemen shit or are interested in that type of content it's better to just not bother. You'd just pretending and it'll be awkward and pointless.

Feels like there could be something else on your torso besides the bodysuit so you can cut back on the elaborate design, though you can take that with a grain of salt since I'm not really into techy designs.
I'd also experiment with the eye color, making it the same as any of your primary/secondary colors causes it to blend together a bit. As long as there's a bit of contrast, it'll look much better, even if it's just a different shade.

The idea is to have something on top, but I'm a little stuck on how to keep with the sci-fi style.

shxtou, xkittymcpancakes, and riikami all do it but they've also all got a history of ASMR, amateur voice acting, etc and aren't just people trying to randomly get into BFE, that's why I say it's better to try and reproduce content you already consume. Not saying you can't do it or that only these people can ever do it, but it's very clear when you're just mimicking something you only just now found out existed and actually having an interest in it.
