What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

If you know a Pokémon that is resembling your animal of choice, maybe try searching the name of it + gijinka or moemon and look what the image results show up. Then you are going to borrow some parts of the designs...
Also for clothing/armor specific parts, the Monster Hunter series does something similar like the concept above; almost all armor sets in the game will be somewhat of a "gijinka" version of the monster connected to it. There is a wide variety of boss monsters in the series from mammal "dragons" and dinosaurs to insects. Maybe there is some fitting inspiration for clothing among them.

It's different from kemonomimi/anthropomorphism term in the way of the character is just wearing accessories and clothes imitating something what isn't human, but the character still stays its own species (which should be most likely human) and shouldn't have something left on its body after being undressed.
Kemonomimi have natural animal ears and tails, perhaps even things like fur and antlers grown from their own body. They may wear similar clothing like a gijinka, but after "undressing" they still own animal parts.
Remember the classic scale

Creative options for male V-Tubers is a lot smaller of a field than female ones, men in general have much fewer styles of clothing/fashion. Stretching it, guys are generally stuck with suits, hoodie/jacket, or some shitty JRPG protag kirito garbage, even JP ones are stuck in this kind of rut.

The most "creative" male designs are just RPG class costumes or occupational uniforms anyway. Ninja, Hero/Knight, Samurai, Coffee Shop/Bartender (which is just a suit usually), or "vaguely military" You've got whatever onions herbivore-male shit Kanae is wearing, but that's really about it most of the time. You can only wear a suit so many different ways in so many different colors or themes.

There are many other niche terms for every single thing, but general speaking you can summarize any human character wearing something strange, animal-like a gijinka, any character with animal ears a Kemonimimi and if a character doesn't really fit both terms above, simply calling it a monster girls (if its female) should always hit the spot, it's the fusion of both terms above and includes even things like mythological creatures to lovecraftian abominations with just a pair of breasts and a face drawn on it.

the original argument was that the anon implied that having kayfabe is what makes good character design. they're completely separate and kayfabe on its own doesn't matter.

people watch vtubers for streamer interactions not to watch a scripted tv show.

>> No.1771328

>>1771238
The personality does matter, but when your character is a huge part of your branding it matters as well. First thing people see perceive is your character, before they even touch your channel and in lots of cases before they even touch the streaming platform if you're networking properly. After that comes your audio, and if it passes that "yeah this is fine/not garbage, i can listen to this for a bit" then comes personality.

Character design is what got Artemis where they are. Even if they've literally hemorrhaged viewers, they're still bigger than anyone from here will ever be and they're one of the biggest indie ENvtubers period, as much as people don't like to admit it.

>my IRL self is pretty uggo guys
>haha I guess I'm a pretty lousy (insert character stereotype), ay guys?
Is the only reason people watch vtubers because of the gf/bf experience? Keeping keyfabe isn't hard, it's literally just role playing.

>> No.1771394

>>1771328
Its a balanced argument. Nina who is a streamer who literally worked herself into high viewership would probably be in 600+ viewers area by now if she had the model of Artemis' scale.

>> No.1771448

>>1771358
I think a lot of vtubers are, it's just more apparent because of the lack of options guys have. Absolutely hit up a character designer. Not someone to design your character, but an artist that specifically works with character design. I found mine after some deep, deep diving on Skima and browsing profiles on Twitter, took all of a few weeks but I've very happy with mine.

>>1771096
I think one of the issues that comes with superheroes is the "buff guy" thing which carries preconceived notions to begin with. I'm not trying to be a twink, but I definitely don't wanna be some buffed out muscly superhero, it's not the feeling most people want to portray. I think character design should match your personality, not be something that a personality needs to fill.

>> No.1771449

>>1771326
>>1771328
Important to remember there are three steps to streaming:

1) Making people click onto your stream
2) Making people stay/come back again
3) Making people actually pay money

Designs are what do the job for part 1 (and the character, thus kayfabe, is part of that package), but part 2 is entirely your content & personality. So you ideally need both to be successful. Part 3 is mostly an extension of part 2, but is heavily modified by what your viewer base sees as value for money.

>>1771390
Eh, it really depends on how much you want to lean into the character. Most just use it as a 'filter' over themselves. Going pure "never break fourth wall" stuff is incredibly rare. Mostly due to it being difficult to keep up (once broken theres really no going back) but also it doesn't really... add much. Unless thats a core part of your content, I guess. Talking about you're IRL self would be strange regardless though, even no matter how little your kayfabe is kept up.

>> No.1771450

Almost all the way down to the bottom, kayfabe isn't what ANY audience is looking for. It's not the creators' fault, it's the demographic. >>1771449
Kayfabe is next to worthless. The only major person its served is Zentreya and that's because their core audience came from RP back in the day.

1 is character design and proper advertising

2. is personality and audio, but kayfabe is more of a negative than a plus because the demographic just isn't as big and done wrong (which most people do because its more often than not cringe) is worse than just not playing a role at all. People watch EN indies for a relatable experience. They want to be part of the group, it's also why very few people lose traction once they gain it, because they're building a community that they just need to keep consistency growing instead of innovating to get attention.

3. You're right about this one, it's just an extension of 2.

I was never really saying that kayfabe is super important, just that its a thing in general. I consider any amount of character 'lore' that you bounce off of some level of kayfabe. Just a really transparent kayfabe. I honestly have no interest in 'playing a role', just use the kayfabe as a way to dance around IRL shit (like how Calli refers to work as "reaping lessons").

I was also thinking about making a pastebin of my thoughts/advice/experiences for Twitch stream moderating. Been a moderator for 3 years now of a streamer that's partnered now (and thus all the internal discussions & experiments the streamer tried to build their channel), and don't know how many people here have any experience really running a show. I mean, that's kind of one of my planned main focuses for content, so I fucking hope so. Though the actual 'drunk' part not so much, it takes too much for me to get drunk for that to be a thing I regularly do on stream. And I'll mostly be drinking/discussing spirits.

load up on cheap bottom shelf vodka to get drunk then sip the good stuff after you've hit a buzz. i don't know what youtube's or twitch's rules about drinking on stream is though. do you just mark your stream as "mature audiences" and hope that's good enough?

>> No.1773853

I have no real interest in being "drunk" all the time, I just like to drink. I should really keep vodka on hand though, its good for some casual drinking when mixed with various other things.

>do you just mark your stream as "mature audiences" and hope that's good enough?
This is something I seriously need to sit down and think about. While overall the content isn't really "mature", obviously I can't have young'ins talking openly about booze. However, I think it would be good to teach them responsible drinking rather than the usual discourse of "just don't do it". Because they will, and it'll probably be absolute trash booze instead of something decent to start with.

Yukatas, kilts, dungarees, tactical vests, bandoliers, neckerchiefs, I dunno anon. Hell, even suits or hoodies can look interesting so long as you put a thematic spin on them. You could have suit jackets made of snakeskin or PVC with a yellow and black warning tape themed design. Hoodies could be oversized or cut short, or have giant toggles or a hood that goes over your head like an executioner. In the event that you go shirtless, you could spice up your design with something like woad or henna or unusual scars. Questions to ask:
1 - what do you want before you die? (what's your vision for this project)
2 - why did you decide to create this character?
3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)

>1 - what do you want before you die? (what's your vision for this project)
My biggest goal is to be able to get through and reteach the instructional content of the Genki textbooks on stream
>2 - why did you decide to create this character?
As teaching was one of my primary focuses for streaming, I wanted my character to look like someone that could be some kind of scholar
>3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
For the teaching streams, an environment where people can learn and also not feel hesitant to ask questions. I could easily just regurgitate the information I study but I want to also make sure that the viewers can understand what I'm actually talking about as well. For other streams, just a comfy environment I guess?
>4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
An audience that is interested in what I'm teaching/playing, mostly.
>5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)
I never went into this expecting money; my focus has always been on the teaching aspect and I think as long as I have those streams where people are engaged and asking questions, then I can personally feel fulfilled in my work
6 - is the brand you are building something that makes you happy? (do you have a plan to get there? begin with the end in mind)
I think being known as "that vtuber that also is kind of like a teacher" and being recognized as such by other indies that i talk with does make my happy. I think the current end goal is to finish the curriculum, beyond that I don't have any specific plans.

>1 - what do you want before you die? (what's your vision for this project)
For a life goal, I want to try as many types of alcohol as possible. For a stream goal... well mostly want to share that experience with others, as well as play some games.

>2 - why did you decide to create this character?
It's an aesthetic I like that matches my temperment and the type of content I want to create. Still need to get it actually designed though.

>3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
I want to make a comfortable environment, where I can discuss alcohol with viewers or chat in general. Also to enjoy older games, as well as diablo style games and metroidvanias. I'd also like to be able to give advice to anyone I can, if possible.

>4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
Honestly anyone that can mesh with the above will be welcome, but I figure overall a more mature audience will be the predominant group.

>5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)
I'd rather build a good community, actually making money is a secondary (or even tertiary) concern for me since I have a full time job that pays well enough to fund hobbies.

>6 - is the brand you are building something that makes you happy? (do you have a plan to get there? begin with the end in mind)
I don't know if I have a plan specifically. I have a content strategy mostly defined, but for the most part I want to start streaming and see what needs to change from there. The proper planning will probably start after that point. But this whole idea is something I absolutely want to do, even after giving it time to settle in my head I'm psyched up for the concept.

>3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
>4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
Just people who want to have a fun time and enjoy what i put out
>5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)
I want to show people games that i feel should have more attention to them and share my childhood with other people because i just want to show people the things i enjoy
>6 - is the brand you are building something that makes you happy? (do you have a plan to get there? begin with the end in mind)

1- My vision is to refine the skills that I currently have while creating content that I myself, and others can enjoy.

2- Honestly, it's not so much of a character than it is myself. It's just how I choose to present myself.

3- I explore a variety of games I haven't played before for the first time, as well as make reviews for them. I also practice voice acting by playing through narrative based games, which is fun because I can do a variety of outlandish voices.

4- Just people that really like a variety of video games, honestly. I don't like Minecraft or Apex, so if people are tired of those, well, I'm here.

5- Not quite sure if I understand the question, but I really want to get better as an entertainer. I honestly don't mind not having that many views, just so long as the ones that stick around enjoy what they see. If I'm able to make money streaming, then that's cool, it'd make it easier for me to make more content and I'd be extremely grateful.

6- I'd say that it is something that makes me happy. I don't think I have much of a specific plan as far as publicity goes, but I've got my content planned out at the very least.

>1 - what do you want before you die? (what's your vision for this project)
In a broad sense, I want to leave some kind of mark, even if it's as a footnote in the history of a subculture, that shows that I lived. Even if my actual human body will die someday, a character and what it may mean to other people is something that can carry on for eternity. In a more specific sense, I hope that through sharing my experience to an audience, I can grow, as a person, as a competitive player, and eventually as a creator in a different sense.
>2 - why did you decide to create this character?
I'm still in the process of working out my design, but I believe that what I have planned will be something that represents a passion that carried me through life. A representation of a constant that keeps me moving
>3 - what are you trying to create for the viewers? (and why is that important to you?)
>4 - what kind of viewers / audience do you want?
This is honestly something I struggle to answer, but something I've noticed as I began to become more engrossed in card games is that people tend to become very tribal about what they view as "their" game. My hope is that I can provide an avenue for that sort of tribal player to reach across the aisle and find something they can value in a game they're unfamiliar with, and even shake off some of my own biases in the process, but as far as presenting that idea to people, I have no clue.
>5 - what is the focus of your channel? (what is integrity, authenticity for you? just transactional viewers as money?)
This somewhat ties into the last point, but I want to provide a place where people who are steadfast at grinding X and people who are steadfast at grinding Y can find the Z to reconcile their joys and frustrations.
>6 - is the brand you are building something that makes you happy? (do you have a plan to get there? begin with the end in mind)
Even though I've barely gotten out of the gate, and haven't even broken ground on the vtuber front yet, if I wasn't happy with what I was doing, I wouldn't do it. I have a general idea of what I want to do and where I want it to lead, but I don't necessarily know if I'd call it a plan.

I dig the new hair accessories and I really like the twin mouse-face fastening! I think I prefer it as a cape than as a shirt? Definitely a stronger colour balance than last time though, and the white mouse outlines really liven it up.. I think it was a cuter design with the braids, but that might just be because I really like braids.

Incidentally, I really enjoyed sketching your design so I am currently going over it with lineart and colours.I will try to introduce some elements of your updated design or make a variant or something, and will drop it soon (I could email it if you would prefer). By the way I was an idiot, what I thought was a QR code turned out to just be a circuit board or some manner of electronic tag when I looked closer. Female fashion is to attract social attention from mates and to show up female rivals. Male fashion is a team-building exercise that establishes norms so a group of different people can believe they're on the same side long enough to get something difficult done. The business suit is the civilian's military uniform. It says, I'm here to play the game, and you can tell I'm serious because I've invested my resources and this much of my identity to gear up for the task at hand.

Female fashion is naturally rewarded for being outlandish. Male fashion is naturally rewarded for being predictable. They're appealing to different social needs. Novelty versus stability.

You know, I have gotten away from the scientist aspect of the design a little bit and am focusing a little more on being an experiment. I realized that while a lab mouse scientist sounds good, it doesn't work if you aren't smart enough to pull it off! I am glad the new accessories are good, they are supposed to be DNA! I am trying to get away from braids now, even though I love them, because I have realized almost every other mouse chuuba has braids! I would love to see your art, you can post it here if you would like to! I will also message you soon, when i get further along in the design! I am a little stuck on the legs and shoes. I should DNA stockings might be cool, but perhaps too hard to convey/draw at the moment so I am brainstorming something else. I would also really like to keep up with your own character design if possible! I don't know if you saw my post in the old thread, but I think I said your design style reminds me of a Monster High doll! I am really hyped to see your chuuba.

First of all, nothing has to be like I did it, it's just some inspiration, also white goes like black with every color, but together as a scheme they are overused and boring heh.
I interpret the version with the red shirt as traditional Chinese clothing, so a combination with the Chinese Zodiac sign rat makes sense, I guess.
The "too much white, because lab mouse" aspect can be kept by making the undergarment white to cover most of the visible skin. Also I don't think a laboratory mouse has no history of being somewhat harmed, so maybe at least one notched ear is reasonable. I don't know what the backstory of the character will be. I only can think about two options here; Mouse that flew out a facility and wants to take revenge or a mouse that works voluntary together with scientists, besides knowing it gets harmed.
Shoes... I don't know if you even want some, I just popped some combat boots? over the legs.
Because the character is literally human-sized mouse, maybe a collar as a choker as an option as well.
Since the mouse is from a laboratory facility or something along that line, maybe some kind of top secret or complex electronic device is connected to it, so I thought maybe a monitoring device makes sense, which shows all data in real time. We can go further and even make this into a gimmick for the character, but I don't know exactly how you could realize a heart rate monitor in real time on a Live2D avatar/3D model.

I truly love this anon, you have created a lot of things that would have never crossed my mind. Especially the use of blue and green accents to make the colors pop, and the not-pipboy. You style its self reminds me of Psychonauts a little bit! I suppose a mutant mouse girl wouldn't be out of place in Psychonauts though. The 32 ear tag is very clever. I also like the boots a lot! I have a hard time thinking outside the box with clothing, and couldn't come up with any ideas outside of various types of Mary Janes. Thank you for the time you have put into this, I am truly grateful. I have been so lucky in posting here, every time someone has posted guidance it has led me closer to a unique and cool design!

I really love your drawing anon!

> I don't know what the backstory of the character will be. I only can think about two options here; Mouse that flew out a facility and wants to take revenge or a mouse that works voluntary together with scientists, besides knowing it gets harmed.
I think I've been a little inconsistent with my backstory so far, but the idea is that she used to be a regular BALB/c lab mouse until she was injected with an experimental elixir that was supposed to give her more humanlike DNA for more accurate experiments, but then it mutated her into a humanoid. And then she told the scientists about how unhappy she was to be experimented upon as a mouse, and so they stopped mouse experiments at the lab she resides at, and now the experiments are done on willing humans and herself.
That's a little cheesy and doesn't make much sense I suppose, but at the time I thought it was a nice story. Now I think the implications of the story are a little limiting, so I might change it but I'm not totally sure.

Newfag here with a few questions.
I'm a dude and I want to maximize my outreach and audience, but I think my options are limited. Should I...
>Go with an attractive male avatar and hope I get enough simpettes
I mean, it's the easiest option since I won't need to act that much. Besides, most guy vtubers I've seen have boring designs so there's room for experimentation here.
>Go with a female avatar and a voice changer, since girls are the most popular ones
Harder, but potentially more payoff. I'd probably have to train my voice a lot, and there's a lot of competition, but it's probably worth it. Also, before anyone calls me a tranny: I'd just be playing a character, that doesn't mean I want to chop my dick off.

Also, how much can a decent animator make in live2d commissions? I'm thinking about double dipping by possibly animating commissions on stream.

As an experienced vtuber, both of these sound like bad ideas. A voice changer and character that does not reflect you just yells inauthenticity and will drive people away. A male in a hoodie reaching for simpettes does not work. You only see it work with vtubers with pre-established fanbase and even those that try this route have historically dried up in viewers quickly. Your best option is to go Wrestler style and just take your self and the things you like and are good at and then turn that up to 11. Viewers appreciate authenticity over most things. Just do what you like. Don't think to much about it. Try to enjoy streaming and have fun, because if you go into vtubing seeking success or approval, I'm afraid things are not looking good. Thinking about "maximizing audience" is something a male vtuber shouldn't be doing.

I just had another idea for you if you really don't want to use your real voice as character gimmick, but I think this makeshift method would be a bit too complicated and not rewarding.
You could fixate yourself to a limited word pool that you can activate with a sound launchpad, like Yes, No, Sorry, My name is xxx. The words themselves are made with a Vocaloid or a similar offbrand synthesizers. But you will be very much limited to say anything, maybe add buttons from A to Z and 0 to 9 as well so you can spell things like a primitive calculator/robot. You mean with dwarf a grumpy bearded little old man who drinks alcohol all day long and lives underground in a mining kingdom? That's already an overused trope everyone expects. But take the aspect of being a little dude and turn it into another midget/gnome race idea.
Here for example there was Brouni race introduced in Etrian Odyssey V, playable were they only as botanist and shaman. In Final Fantasy (14) you have those gnome guys around. Both races have child-like proportion, in the male case rather shota-like, but they still can keep the look of young adults without disproportional bodies of real life midget people.

dumb response: no, you've still got time! just work hard and you'll make it, anon!

real response: the field is saturated already. full stop. anyone else trying to 'make it' at this point are already too late. you're either already streaming, or you're wasting your time.

that being said, you should focus 90% of your effort on this single question. "What can I create that will add value to the world?" and don't cop out like a piece of shit and say something mundane like 'i just wanna be chill and be an okay streamer that people want to hang out with' because there are already hundreds of streamers who do that, and do it better than you.

Someone who streams on YT here
Twitch raids are decent but the unfortunate thing about Twitch is that for smaller streams, you can’t change the quality; you need to be a relatively bigger streamer to do that, while on YT anyone can change the quality
Also the VOD player is shit on Twitch when you want to go back and clip something that just happened but on YT the VOD player is pretty good, even if you do have to record the screen to clip stuff. At least, for now
Soon YT livestream clips will be introduced and maybe after that even stream raids so it’s only a matter of time before YT outshines Twitch

>the field is saturated already
Maybe I'm misinformed, but looks to me like it's saturated with gamers, and that there's room for musicians/artists/people who make creative content. Doubly so if people can figure out better hand tracking (maybe something like the leap motion could work for this but I'm not too familiar with it). I'm just sick of watching people play games. Streaming video games just doesn't have much value, and its not particularly unique to any individual. Anyone can play games and make it entertaining. If you have creative hobbies that you're good at, and you're somewhat charismatic, then maybe there's a chance. But I wouldn't know, I just watch streams and know what I like to see.

>> No.1817662

even with that angle, Youtube will be infinitely better for you in terms of discoverability.
>viewer checks out some video of beginning musician/artist
>youtube alg see that and adjusts recommendeds to push more musician/artist videos
twitch doesn't do this and doesn't care about small timers because it doesn't make them ad monies.

if all you want to do is "make some videos on a website about this thing you like" then sure, twitch is fine. if you want to grow? don't use twitch.
