I think it's more along the lines of what you're "comfortable" with as the more you learn about other culture and countries, the more you learn about concepts that seem alien to you and make you naturally want to retreat to what is familiar. As for Towa's attachment to "Japanese culture and aesthetics," I think that has less to do with her foreign influences and more to do with the fact that in Japan there is a strong pressure to conform, and Towa really wants to be seen as a cute girl, so she does things to try and fit into the cute girl mold, whether consciously or unconsciously.
