Alternatively you could go 3D bc then you can just use character creator to spit out a model for you. VRoid models have loads of programs to control them, and can even be dropped into unity to build a custom environment.

Personally I'm of the opinion that content creators need to be able to stand on their own, so I've been avoiding networking with the rest of the community.

I actually see it as a trap, because then you tie yourselves to them (and thus their drama).

Vtubers are still a novel concept to a wider youtube audience, so if you went for a different style you could try building your own community.

I'm aiming to do scripted explainer-style videos, as I'm pretty bad at livestreaming. Just building an environment in unity in the before I start doing those, and streaming in the mean time just to get used to talking to myself.

If you want to dick around in unity, the VMC protocol is free and you can make a model with VRoid. It's literally drag and drop and it just works. Thats how I'm doing my setup, and I'm using my limited coding knowledge to have it so I can reposition my model/camera any way I want.

The same protocol can also accept input from VR/fullbody tracking inputs. I think there are even ways to use MMD in unity if you wanted that kind of movement but didn't have the tracking for it.

If you have no experience doing any of those things I suggest you take it slow and go one-by-one to prevent maximum scuffage. True, but... there's people who like watching smaller and newer streamers, as they provide a completely different atmosphere where everyone feels welcomed. The market will also never be ‘saturated’ because every new streamer is also a new viewer, as you can’t grow a channel with no interaction with other streamers and communities unless you already have a viewerbase elsewhere. If you decide to stream about your passions, streaming won't feel like a slow trek out of mediocrity and you might one day realize your subs/views grew in what felt like the blink of an eye.

I've thought about streaming a few times, and maybe I could be good at it. Some people have said that I'm charismatic, and I have hobbies that I'm enthusiastic about. Among other things, I make music and do mixing/mastering/sound design/gig work on the side, and have a few albums through some indie labels that performed decently—my point is that I'm alright at what I do. But streaming—in general, but especially as a vtuber—wouldn't give me anything that I don't already have.

I don't think there is a market for a Vtuber that rambles on about the lore of various settings, and builds DnD one-shots.

If I felt there was a interest in a male vtuber that talked about the Lore of Runetera(League of legends), Runescape, or other random interesting worlds, I'd go for it.
