What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I'm trying to find info on the last NijiEN application, and an article i found says "you must offer content multiple times a week for one year, if not longer". Is this accurate? I'm almost certain only a few in NijiEN have had PL's lasting a year + Also, are there other requirements besides age?

>I'm almost certain only a few in NijiEN have had PL's lasting a year +
The majority of Nijisanji EN were streamers in their past life but had even more on top of that. For example Pomu was a uitate cover singer and idol irl before going indie and then finally applying to Nijisanji. Vox is one of the few who had the least streaming experience with barely 2 months but years of voice acting content creation prior to that. Even Finana who aspies love to treat as nothing more than just a vtweeter had a Twitch channel with 16k views.

As for the application it was close to the Hololive and just talked about what you wanted to do as a vtuber and why you wanted to join Nijisanji.

Offering content multiple times a week for at least a year is part of your work as a Nijisanji liver, not a requirement for applying. But it does seem like everyone they've hired so far had substantial content creation experience. That may change in the future, though.

Just keep in mind that the bar for standards has been rising pretty rapidly since Lazulight came out. Rumor is they already have a 5th wave of another 5 males ready to go from the recent surge of indie graduations. So if you're thinking of applying to Nijisanji, it'd be compared against 5 total waves of streamers.

>> No.16935933

>Out of curiosity, do you think the bars for entry for Males are lower than the Females?
Higher. At least for these waves. It's still a risky move for any corporation to invest into males so they're going to want to have demonstrable talent.

>> No.16936268

>>16935764
I wouldn't worry about entry bars. These first few waves might just be stricter because they're a new market and Anykara wants to start off strong. (We know that there are totally new streamers in other branches after all.) You never know if and when they'll lower the bar, and it's better to be the first person to pass the lower bar than to wait and see if someone else makes it first. If you get rejected, just apply again later after streaming more. And if you do get in and I recognise you, I'll give you my first aka supa.

Kek.

Seriously though…you would never know but realistically speaking, you’re more likely than not to be stuck with being a 2view for months if not years. The most successful online content creators have been at it for years before they became a name everyone knows. Corpo chuubas are different because you’ll always have an audience right at the beginning thanks to the brand. But the ones who get these opportunities spend years in their PLs just to get the branding.

Doesn’t help that the market is extremely saturated. Everyone and their mom is being a Vtuber. Not saying it’s too late and you’ll never make it, but first mover advantage is real.

>Should I put streaming on the very backburner and focus on school and getting a job?
You can make this your primary hobby. Look at the ones who eventually transitioned to full-time online content creation after they found stable success. Focus on your school and/or day job but essentially dedicate whatever free time you have to this if you really want to make it. Again, there’s no guarantee you will though, so think if that’s alright for you. You’re potentially spending years of time/hundreds of dollars/losing sleep over something that might not work out. For every 1 streamer you know, there’s thousands out there who you don’t.

Before anyone blows up at me like they did the other guy in the past thread about PNGtubers, this isn’t discouragement. This is just reality. I’m also set for a “debut” in March and would love to get famous and successful enough to quit my day job and do this shit full-time. But we all gotta look at the situation objectively.

Not the same situation but I'm thinking about trying Vtubing out (will have everything ready by end of Q1 at the latest), then once I establish a foothold and know I'll be doing this long term, I plan on inviting my friends (who know of Vtubers and are considering trying it out) to join me. It's easy collabs and everyone can help each other out.

As for my family, I'm shy about it now because I'm investing all this time, money, and effort for what might be a pipe dream. I've hinted towards me starting some online content creation, but I only plan on telling them up front once I become good enough. To them, anything more than a hundred subscribers/followers is doing pretty good in their eyes. It would be nice to get the support, whether it's moral support or being able to shush them during streaming hours without question.

>OK streams
I mean you can talk about the "bar" but one of Luxiem's most popular member was the smallest one, and similarly sized to these people. Twitch followers are a fairly meaningless statistic though. I've seen people with 20k and only 30 viewers. Look at Vox as well. He's got tons of experience in content creation, but (not to insult him) still doesn't do anything different than the average 20view on Twitch, he's just got a really nice voice. Not to say his content is bad at all because it's not.

There's realistically no difference between Vox and Msya despite them being completely opposite ends of the spectrums as content creators. They just want people who can entertain and who have a record of content creation, which they do. Think of it as all those jobs that require you to have a college degree. You can have better skills all around vs someone who does have it, but they're still more likely to pick the person with the degree. In this case, that piece of paper is proof you've got a history of content creation, not necessarily just your numbers.

>> No.16944185

>>16943698
Of course. I acknowledge Vox and Mysta's ability as an entertainer despite not being a viewer of theirs. What I meant was that depending on the chuuba, the "bar" ends up looking very different, so I'd love to see their audition videos, interviews, and all that and see how they went through it.

>> No.16947285

Honestly Niji's the way to go about recruiting people. They look for people who do their minimum reps in content creation and use their audition process to filter out the best candidates irrespective of their numbers. So far all the NijiENs were not very popular or famous people in their past lives but they're absolutely thriving right now as Nijis. Whereas you look at Hololive's audition process where they only look for the biggest numbers which resulted in a lot of duds like the council.

The key thing to takeaway from this is to keep making content and gathering a fanbase, eventually if you're good enough you can enter a good corpo like Niji. Just dont expect to get in HoloEN without massive numbers though.

How much time of preparation should I invest in before debut?

I plan to start as JPGtuber (still working on design), and focus on drawing because time constraints, and I'd feel it'd be better for working out how not to freeze up and shit, then get add Steam games and emulators (most likely Pokemon since it's the one I'm most comfortable talking about) since I don't think I need a Capture Card for those?

The only streaming experience I have is drawing in discord VCs with friends a couple of times, making remarks, and explaining some stuff I do (To a low degree, since I don't know too much technical stuff in art)

I do have a rough schedule, streaming 1-2 hours every Mon/Wed/Fri at night (22:00 EST) and Saturdays or Sundays 2 hours (13:00 EST?)

All sounds good, but a debut only works as a first stream if you're a corpo, or have built hype like the sexy snake. I would consider saving a 'debut' for a month or two after starting, maybe when you hit affiliate?

>>16976694
I found a got initial views from joining a streamer/vtuber 'community'. I know the reVtweeter bot has a discord group, or the r/twitch subreddit, so that sort of thing can be good to get initial eyes on you. Once you have some regulars, I've found success in taking them to niche games. If you can pick something you enjoy, that doesn't have many people live, like Civ 5, you can get quite a few people hop in and follow if you're at all charismatic.

So this is all the opinions of one anon. I've definitely not made it. So maybe you should do the exact opposite of my advice.
Unless you can gain a following before ever hitting go live for the first time, it's VERY likely that you'll have nobody show up to your first stream.
Maybe you link it here, and some people turn up. Maybe you post it on twitter, get picked by the algo, and get two or three people show up... But you're unlikely to get more than five. Even then, that'd be weird on your first ever stream.
A debut is a GREAT chance to celebrate... But if you don't have any fans, or even just viewers, nobody is going to know. You can hype yourself on twitter all you want, but that isn't going to help your numbers.
Take AniYuki. 2.5k on twitter, 330 on twitch. 90 day CCV of 4. 7/14 day of 3.
https://twitter.com/AniYuki_Vtuber
https://sullygnome.com/channel/aniyuki_vt/90
Currently on 17 viewers, but this is the peak, according to sully.

Also, it gives you a bonus chance to celebrate. You can throw a party for 1 year of streaming, 1 year since debut, 1 year since affiliate, birthday... Aiming for semi-freuqent events can definitely help with growth

Nijisanji
Hololive produces great content but they still hold onto the "idol" company mindset, and I think a lot of creativity gets axed because of it(haachamas schizo arc). And for being one of the first successful companies they sure are slow on the draw for most things and embracing change.

Niji has felt more soulfull, probably because the people in it are friends from before, and collabs don't really feel forced. People hopping into streams can be comfy. As a downside though, it's very possible they'll have 30+ en members within a years time which is offputting as a viewer and a prospect.
In the end, money doesn't really matter to me, so I'd go Niji.

Is it worth investing on Live2D early on? I'm currently a PNGtuber but I can draw and I have confidence that I'll be able to nail rigging too as well and reach an adequate level given enough time and investment to further learn about it (have attended a single workshop and have gotten most of the simple basics down). Should I just continue streaming and making content with a PNG and delay a Live2D when I already have an audience, or should I switch to a Live2D as soon as even if it's a relatively simple one?

>> No.17002692

>>17000708
It helps having a schedule, even if only something like "will stream" because it not just notifies your viewers you will stream, but it also serves as self-discipline. It's a bit NAGL to not push through with your set schedule as a small chuuba. Eventually, you'll find making a more substantial schedule easier, whether it's games you know you need to finish because you already started them or collabs you set up with others.

>>17001935
Have you tried streaming already? If you have and think that you'll be pursuing this long-term, yes if you have either the money or the ability to draw and/or rig one yourself. You can just have a 2.0/better Live2D model after you've already gotten an audience.

>> No.17002999

It’s your choice since you’ll be able to draw and rig everything yourself, the only issue is if you want to spend the time on that. I’m an artist and created a VTuber child ready for rigging, it was rough with my art style (I normally draw on 1-2 layers) and took 2-3 months of on and off work. The only difference between doing your reps now and doing your reps in a month when you've got a rigged model is that you waited a month. That's it. You still need to do your reps, you still need to get better, and you see have a lot of time before you can improve. The problems only come in when it's been months on end and you're still stalling. There's a chance you won't like it at all but realistically that isn't /asp/'s problem it's your own. No one here is affected in any way whatsoever if you spend a month working on a Live2D model and suddenly realize you hate streaming a month in.

Yes I've already tried streaming since the start of January and am quite fond of the creation process of it all despite having no followers so far. While I do wish to make it a long term hobby, I am not currently in a position for me to be able to spend money on it sadly enough. Hence, why I am considering the route of making and rigging one myself.

>>17002999
That's exactly what I am currently considering as of the moment. I am wondering if investing time on an L2D model would be a good trade-off in order to be able to better catch or attract audiences. I do not have the voice nor the level of energy to be able to easily hook people into staying and thus why I'm considering a L2D in order to be able to express myself better in a visual manner instead in an attempt to tip the scales a little bit towards my favor.

>>17003449
That's also another route that I can take yes. However, there is also the fear that having a PNG can actually hinder me big time in the long run.

No one will stay for more than a day or two (I'm being generous here) even if you have the most beautiful and well rigged avatar in the world if you aren't good at entertainment (you don't have to be loud or high energy to be entertaining). I've seen many amazing models with little to no viewers on both Twitch and YT because they're boring as shit. People will click yes, but no one will stay if you're a terrible streamer.

I don't recommend you put all your cards on the model, you need to practice streaming as well. If you're uncomfortable with streaming, hit record in OBS and just act like you're live. Once you're done, pretend you're watching a random VTuber while reviewing the recording.

Now is the random VTuber (you) funny? Do they do interesting things in the videogame? Is there a lot of dead air? Are there any annoying background sounds? Would you stay to watch them for more than 1-2 minutes? If you wouldn't watch this, then practice more. Think about what you could've said at X point in the recording, what you could've done to be funnier, how you should've expanded a topic, etc. Do this over and over, even if you're actually streaming (but with VODs).

I were to watch my past self from 1-2 years ago stream now, I would've clicked off the stream instantly. I barely talked and couldn't even be considered a comfy streamer. Even now, there are still many things I could improve on, but with practice I'm able to hold my ground.

This advice may not necessarily apply to you, but I hope it's somewhat useful for other anons here. I feel like /asp/ talks a lot about starting to stream or just going live, but not much about what to do to get better as a streamer. Even the streamers at the top review their VODs often and think about what they could've done better. It isn't revolutionary advice, but it helps a lot to improve.

>I feel like /asp/ talks a lot about starting to stream or just going live, but not much about what to do to get better as a streamer.
That's because it's the more relevant piece of advice. Most of the anons coming here have never streamed in their lives and do not know the first thing about streaming. Starting out and getting experience gives them the best hands on experience about what works and what doesn't.

One thing that used to be talked a bunch were things like transitions, overlays, where to put the chat box and shit like that. None of it actually matters but it's easy to waste time thinking about getting the perfect alerts and perfect overlay just like the Holos. When they get started and find out that their problem isn't overlays but the fact that they can't fill dead air for 4 hours.

I don't think /asp/ is the place for more experienced streamers. If you've got a schedule going for 3 months and stuck to it then you are well beyond what /asp/ can do to help. At that point it becomes really specific do your brand of content and what you can do for your audience.

Even as someone with viewers, I really can't explain how I got them nor can most people who are big and have made it. I think that's partially why you've got people like Jusagi who have all this technical information and data, but can't apply it. I'm beating a dead horse here, but I've always thought "You either have it or you don't." and rarely see exceptions to this. I don't say this in an attempt to shut anyone down to discourage them, it's just what I've seen and experienced watching streams and content creators for so long

Aside from technical knowledge, (still very important stuff, don't get me wrong) that can only really help the quality of your stream there's not much anyone here or anywhere can teach you. no one can teach you to be funny or witty, no one can teach you to entertain an audience or shift out of awkward situations or jokes that are falling flat, not without dozens or hundreds of hours of your time and constant coaching, none of which you'll get here.

Most of the biggest and best streamers are the class clowns from highschool, the funny guy in the friend group, cute uwu wanna be voice actresses, not-quite-pro but still really good E-Sports guys, etc. They were doing this for years or maybe their whole lives with just close friends and family, then realized they could stream it and maybe someone would look. I can tell you to "stop having dead air" but I can't tell you how exactly to fill it, and even if I say "Talk about your day", you can tell the exact same story as a more entertaining person and it'll hit entirely different because you're two different people. In the end, it comes down to your personality, or your abilities to fake one which is a lot harder than just "naturally" being entertaining.
tl;dr no one can do that

What I'm concerned about however is the idea that a big reason why people would hastily click out or not even dare to click in is because of I am using a PNG to begin with; The idea that my model can be the sole reason as to why I can't even get my foot in the door. It's this. Can a high quality Live2D model help? Yes. But that really only matters for the first 10 seconds. Your content will be the most important thing that brings viewers back. I know aspies love to timeloop about "but what about that first click?" and it really does not matter in the long run.

Your best bet is to start posting short form content that represents your brand out on social media. Learning to market yourself well is a skill that every chuuba must learn if they want to keep growing. Off the top of my head, an indie chuuba who does this the best would probably be Oni Giri.

Her gimmick is a cooking vtuber and she posts clips on Twitter and Youtube that represents her brand very well. https://twitter.com/OnigiriEn_/status/1484680548538855427 This lets people know what to expect from her streams. Small throat clears/coughs once in a while are fine with me personally. My chat said they're ok with me coughing a lot and to not apologize, but I want their viewing experience to be good so I mute if I do it too often (just to be polite). Sometimes a bad cough comes out and I couldn't mute in time, but it's not the end of the world since I tilt my head away from the mic and cough to the side so it's not as loud. Chat just asks me if I'm good and don't make a big deal out of it. I don't have a phlegm-filled cough though, just a dry one.

A hot drink helps a lot to stop my throat irritation (hot water with honey is common, but I don't like it). Anything that can coat your throat a bit is good (oily food for example). Not sure if it'll help your phlegm though.

A pop filter wouldn't reduce the noise, it only stops puffs of air from hitting your mic directly. I suggest turning your head to the side if you can't mute on time so you aren't blowing your chat's eardrums out.

Will you already put all the info(rules, twitter/youtube channel/donations) to your panels since beginning or not gonna do it until sometime later?

Better sooner than later. Although make sure you got something on those links first

Getting your panels set up is part of the "professional" look. It's probably not going to make anyone click on you, follow you, or leave your stream, by itself... But it might make them less well disposed to you. It looks like the streamer hasn't put in quite as much effort, so maybe they're not taking it as seriously.

It's like having an overlay. If it's done well, you won't notice it. But you might notice if there's not one, just a game, model, and blackness.
