What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

>Start creating, stop tweeting.

I understand who this advice is meant for but I feel like I'm the opposite of Twitter chuubas that just grow there and rarely (if ever) actually create content on video platforms.

I feel like I need to grow on Twitter too for 2 reasons:

1) I want to replicate the activity of corpo chuubas so that I have a portfolio that will look like I'm already like them when I apply.
2) I want to convert the Twitter followers to Twitch viewers.

Are those viable or do they lead nowhere?

>> No.16561116

>>16559464
>>16559654

There are two types of streamers that succeed doing "chill streams"

1. They're already famous for something beyond it (being early adopters, luck, other type of content, etc.)
2. They are educational in some way, e.g. Randon, Syafire. People want to hear what advice they have to give.

>> No.16561309

>>16561030
I know this is bait but for any /asp/ies that are genuinely looking.

Slugma from Tsunderia and Sakana from Phase Connect basically admitted that Twitter marketing is worthless because it doesn't convert to Twitch viewers. If you want to be a content creator, create content.
>1) I want to replicate the activity of corpo chuubas
You'll only be copying the motions of the corpos without any substance to back up anything you do.
>2) I want to convert the Twitter followers to Twitch viewers.
That fact that you think this is something you can do already speaks about how little you understand about Twitter. It's easy to build a following on Twitter but they won't convert to Twitch viewers.

>> No.16562453

>>16561309

>1) I want to replicate the activity of corpo chuubas so that I have a portfolio that will look like I'm already like them when I apply.
That doesn't matter, your video content does. Stay out of Drama and just RT art you like, post fun memes with your char and clips etc and your social media is fine. Make a silly post once in a while.

>2) I want to convert the Twitter followers to Twitch viewers.
That won't matter either, your video content will.

Very few people are watching a Vtuber solely because of Twitter. Yes, there are people who can grow due to Twitter like Kenji did pre-tiktok boost and yes, you can gain SOME viewers from it, but Twitter is more for networking tool for chuubas so that other creators can see your content and you can see theirs. A majority of your viewers have and will always come from your video content. You might grab some people if a clip of your happens to go viral on Twitter like Cimrai or Kenji's, but that's not something you should really expect.

Going through my follows now (admittedly, I do not watch many chuubas), the last time I followed someone from Twitter purely for their content and not because it was a networking thing, a friend or mutual I want to engage with more, or some outside reason was PrayersFromAbigai over a year ago, land she went viral within the community. You likely will not be going viral. That doesn't mean don't post your content to Twitter, just don't expect your followers there to ever translate into viewers and don't try too hard to LARP a corpo.

Has anyone ever make a custom overlay in Unity or some other software for OBS? I kind of want to try to do something that’s more than just a browser source, thinking chat, alerts, and maybe some other cool additions that I haven’t thought of yet (and mentioned)

"Chill" stream is usually just a cope term for "boring." "Comfy" and other similar words as well. Foster a comfortable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Still leave no dead air. The people who do this best treat the game as a backdrop or perhaps inspiration for their speech and storytelling and won't hesitate to just pause the game or loiter around to emphasize those strengths, I've found. Choose your games wisely if you'd like to do this.

From a business standpoint and from Slugma and Fishman's personalities, they seem to be very risk adverse. Looking at how many good quality vtubers out there now that are just doing pretty well that want to join corpos, there's no doubt that there's no shortage of talent out there. If you come from a place with no history in making stuff, there's no point in picking someone like that because it's risky. You dont know if they're any good in the long run or would they just lose interest in streaming later on and have hiatus problems.

You only have to look at the members of tsunderia and phase connect to see the problem childs and why they're choosing to be less risky for the long term health of their companies.

>> No.16584006

>>16583882
Oh no, I completely get where they're coming from.
The problem is that if they want people who've "made it", and who are streaming full-time... What the fuck does going corpo offer?
Take Nina as an example. If she joins Tsunderia, she'd switch platform, lose all her current viewers, lose the tight control she currently has, be subject to US laws as well as Dutch, not be able to skirt laws anyway (such as karaoke), and have to start again from scratch.
Unless she kept going, but under their label... in which case, what bonus does Tsunderia have to offer? Cheaper merch production, maybe?

>> No.16584160

>>16584006
Honestly a good point.
For a successful indie like Nina, I really dont see the point of her joining Tsunderia. Maybe to use the vast amount of music production vtubers they have? However for a 50% cut that's still just not worth it in the long run.
At least for phase connect there's a history of fishman buying things for the talents, buying ads and funding MVs so there is some reason to join them.

I think that's why you see a lot of lower tier vtuber apply to corpos that have stricter restrictions in the hopes of making it bigger than being indie. Look at Prism, their new gen are very low performing vtubers in their past lives. For Phase connect and Cyberlive though, their more generous contracts mean that there is some advantage in joining them as an indie compared to other corpos because they not only offer the same freedom as indies but also advantages of corpos like advertising, merchandising, connections and etc.

For example bigger ears, fluffier hair, puffier jacket, etc. It will give your design way more personality and a nicer silhouette. I think bulky shoes in particular would look really good here.
When you have small modest features, your brain kinda goes over them instead of allowing them to become a charm point.

Only design ?
It really depends on the pricing set by the artist, that is usually what they can run away with their "reputation or following count, clout" + actual technical artstyle.

I believe if I'm not mistaken that the Nijisanji designers set a "price for companies" and not for indies, since no way someone would give away a design for cheap to a company
What to do then, if most artists don't deal with a newbie with no content creation story if you don't even have money ?

I suggest to snag some artist who is a newcomer on the social media scene, a bit unsure on their "worth or price" or even someone usually originating from a "poor valute currency" country like SEA countries, if yourself can pay them with a "stronger currency that converted to theirs will give them buckets load of money"

Also, be sure to have the "commercial use and copyright of the character design"
Might be me who still thinks about what happened to Projekt Melody designer/modeler copyright deal tho

Because when someone follows a streamer, they follow them for their "persona(lity)" ...
But I don't like my looks, so nevermind a facecam streamer LMAO

However,
I wanted to be a mangaka as I felt like an empty person ... who wanted to claim to possess a "heart" or be a normal human by making stories ... but as I realised that people after a manga series ends, they stop caring about how the author is living thru and wanted mostly only the content of the manga or basically, "what they can do or provide", I never went thru to become a mangaka ...
When VTubing made a breakthrough, I was floored and had an "eureka" moment of combining storymaking with anime aesthetics of Chuubas ahaha
For streamers, they follow you for "who you are" ... albeit you need to put out content at first to attract people to your "persona"

A bit of blogposting, but at first I wanted to make friends with other Chuubas ... because I believed they might have been socially retarded people like me who believes in anime world ideals LOL
Also realised that everyone is pursuing the idea of "success" and that relationships are just fickle in this sphere ... most times

So now I want to make my "never acted on them" dreams, that is, making manga or Visual Novels that is interactive with the chat, figure out how to make storytelling and worldbuilding and conlangs on stream and eventually if I ever learn coding, to make a protocol blockchain too

Alright, after a lot of thinking (and to my shock: family supports the idea) i'm gonna commit into the idea of creating my own group of friends/vtubers and see how it goes. Question is: i wanna learn how to make riggings (i have shown some of my art here a couple of threads ago, the purple gal with the sword) so i can test out how it works, already checked out the channels in the OP post. What's next in line?

I guess now it's draw an avatar and then rig it? Sorry if this is very amateur, but i don't want to accidentally skip over a step and learn incorrectly.

>> No.16601758

>>16600545
You prolly know this already, but draw the .psd file with the separated layers for rigging like explained here :
https://youtu.be/ieiioJaznXc

Live2D tutorials I followed from Enma Akatsuki : https://youtu.be/yiIRGzTthII
Live2D tutorials explained by Yoshino Art :
https://youtu.be/uc5h-fXCTmQ

And yeah, after drawing it with separated layers, you rig it next in Live2D
Remember that Live2D has 2 versions, a FREE and PRO
The FREE version is limited in how much imported canvas size can be big, and you can't make lots of "parameters" or "deformers" either ...
You can prolly only rig the bust and up to the face, not a full body I'd say

However, when you first open the Live2D
You can also "opt" for the PRO version ... BUT -
You can only use the Pro that is only a TRIAL for ... 42 days, if I remember correctly

So if you didn't buy Live2D license that is also ONLY subscription available and you need to renew it depending on their plans (monthly, yearly - that also changes if your income is lower or higher than those numbers their shopping page displays), my only suggestion is :
Test the Live2D FREE version first to get accustomed how it works by doing "rigged SCUFFED ... chibi" ?
Then, when you know how it generally works
Draw your model first ... and only LATER do activate the PRO trial mode of Live2D
You have 42 days only ...
I was able to make 2 models this way (sorry, low bragging ...), one for myself and another for a friend who taught me what VTubers actually were ...

Good luck !

This is a huge resource, used to be a part of either this OP or another. Bit overwhelming. Start with the video on anatomy, and articles on how the voice works. You might benefit early on from learning a bit about phonetics, I think crash course has some solid videos on the topic. The books are a bit excessive, but among them I can personally recommend https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/20069 and https://files.catbox.moe/lcobyq.pdf, the latter is useful for streaming as well. I've given each of the channels in here a watch for 2-3 videos, the only one you'll need starting out is Trimble. Don't be discouraged that he presents his guidance for opera singing, think of opera as the baseline for proper singing (that sounds more intimidating than it is, promise) - learn the rules before you break them, yadda yadda, someone else in here swears by his videos too, maybe he'll chime in with more guidance on which to watch first, I think the order presented in this doc is fine, but I'd watch the video on identifying the mask first.

Even if you don't have any tea around the house you can't really go wrong with just drinking hot water. I'm a coffee fiend and was able to ween myself off of it a little by just drinking hot water instead of a second or third cup.

i haven't made it by any interpretation. but i have checked out the stats for other indie streamers who started at the same time as i first did.
the notes:
1 - female buff is real. sexy female model > female model > female voice. if you're a non-passing mtf, you're fucked.
2 - deep voice/daddy vibes can more than make up for female-buff as a male. if you're a VA at all, you can grow a LOT.
3 - art buff is significant for followers, but not for CCV.
4 - play a niche, and lose your viewers when you lose it. play variety, have less in general
5 - longer streams = more viewers. regardless of model gender, operator gender, language, or content. the longer your average stream, the higher your CCV. (this does not imply causation, just correlation)

to add to this, your primary growth will be off-stream.

Streaming less would open up time for you to learn to watch, edit, and clip your content. When I upgraded them, it was a friend's partner, and she'd never done them before, she didn't know what to charge, and asked what I wanted.
