That's because every corpo has their own meaning of the "meta" buzzword which fits their agenda but the underlying principles to make their vision work are all the same. Facebook wants their metaverse to be filled with ads and shit but they also need their metaverse to be compatible with other companies' metaverses or else no one will use it, so they need open standards to make that sort of interoperability happen.
All the blockchain shit is an optional layer on top of that to manage ownership and authentication but that layer could very well be managed by a more sane approach like federated networks. And it doesn't need to be a market, just like you can visit some websites for free and pay a subscription to visit others.

Besides Valve banning NFT games off of Steam, I think the main reason is because NFTs are supposedly more energy intensive due to being part of the blockchain.
