What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Listen, you can't just post a carrots screenshot and expect a Sudanese autism advocacy group to know what your range is. Several reasons:
1. We can't know if you're actually any good at your high and low notes off of a carrots post. Carrots can't tell if you're straining, it can't differentiate between squeaks and growls you manage to eke and actual usable range, it doesn't check that you can hit all notes continuously in the range, etc etc etc
2. Vocal type isn't just range, it's also where your voice sounds best. Being able to sing a C3 as a woman doesn't make you a contralto if your voice doesn't shine in your low notes, for example.
3. Your "type of singing voice" doesn't actually matter, caring if you're a tenor or a mezzo-soprano or whatever is just a meme. It really only matters if you're planning to sing opera, which is what the terms were invented for
Don't worry about your "vocal type", start trying to sing some songs you find on Carrots that are in this range you've just found. You'll get a sense for what's easy for you and sounds good in your voice, as well as which of these notes you can actually consistently hit. Then you can start recording yourself and listening to it to find what you need to improve in your singing voice.

AH shit I misread it, but yeah basically, Soprano, same range as a tenor but an octave up, same applies with the difficulty on B if it exists, but another thing to consider for a female voice is just a lack of comfort with your chest voice, so you with instruction there's a chance you could develop either up or down. For now, without hearing you, I'd say practice as if you're a soprano and avoid the low B if it doesn't come out as easily as the rest of your notes. Like that other anon said, it's hard to say for sure without hearing what those notes sound like in your voice. However, voice type DOES matter, knowing the notes you can cover with a uniform tone is important to singing nicely, and pretty much entirely biological when it comes down to it, so it's in your best interest to name your instrument.

The positive: Since you kept asking, the sound is fine, though the game could be a little louder. I think the point where you put it up so viewers could hear the soundtrack better was nearly the right level, find somewhere between that and the default you had.
The negative: Not sure where to begin. Best way to summarize it is you have things to say but there's zero substance, and the energy is really low, feels like I'm sitting next to the weird kid from school that my mom says I should be nice to. Are you inspired by WoolieVersus by any chance? Really feels like it, and that's not a good thing, they literally do everything wrong and mostly coast by on Woolie's old cred. Your voice also affects your delivery, and it's kinda low. When you want to talk about something, you need to know how to stretch it, or find better ways to relate to the viewer. I'm sure Capcom's old soundboards are very cool, but that doesn't really say anything on its own.
Your model is kinda fuckin shit, I can tell it's actually Live2D because it has the standard breathing cycle but you didn't do anything beyond that and blinking, aesthetically it feels like effort was put in for the sake of having something unique but it's just mediocre and isn't very nice to look at. It's possible to have a nice looking model that took a little effort using a bit of improvisation and actually taking some reference (or even just copying) a good thing but you decided to make it from scratch despite being an amateur, and effort doesn't translate to quality if you don't know how to direct it properly. The actual theme of the model is alright, but again it's executed poorly. You can photobash a PNG and it'll look much better.
Your stream layout seems unfinished based on the choice of backdrop, so I'm going to let that slide but if it isnt, I hope you feel how passive aggressive I'm being about it. There are plenty of resources or even layouts that people give out for free that you can use to make it look nice, especially fitting too with the theme you're going for.
I won't really comment on the choice of game since it was meant to be a test stream, but for future reference arcade runs of FGs aren't really interesting.

What makes a model design something that people want to draw?
This is anecdotal at best, but I’ve generally observed that a good part of it might boil down to the way the design is rendered by the artist, and also the general concept mud either be interesting or invoke certain emotions.

Some solid advice from an artist doing their own model to another, don't do more than you would on a regular drawing if you don't have to. I see plenty of other artists who try to be way too clean or precise with their coloring and spend way more time than they realistically need to. You don't want to end up spending more time managing layers than actually drawing and filling it in.

I think if you watched through your own vods, you would have noticed the commentary problem immediately, or rather the lack of commentary at all. Your voice and model are nice and actually fit together when you make noise. You really REALLY have to consider what kind of audience actually watches dota/lol streamers, and how those streamers actually interact with their audience too. You should probably watch other low view people in those categories and get an idea of how they can hold their viewers, perhaps in the 20-50 range to get started, but IMO your model probably doesn't mesh at all with the Dota audience, maybe with the LoL audience though? You need to completely rethink your approach, and also figure out how to fill all the dead air, because talking when nobody else is speaking to you is a big skill for streaming early on that'll help make you approachable, not just so you have actual content for people to discover but so viewers coming in don't have to feel any responsibility to get interaction from you.

To the point of these anons >>16339894 >>16339930 any topic can, reasonably, be a "good topic" but you have to actually bring something of interest to the table for that to be the case. Talking about mundane things like "I've had burgers a lot lately" isn't what I'd consider some grand conversation topic, but at the same time Gura talking about some convoluted multi-layered nonsense approach to turning a McDonalds combo into three or four meals worth of food peppered with funny anecdotes/comments to accentuate it (i.e. the bit about a refrigerated McD patty being hard enough that she could dent a wall by throwing it) suddenly turns what would be a mundane story into a clippable one.

Honestly, at least IMO, so much of being a good conversationalist comes down to having varied, interesting experiences that you can speak at length about. The best way to become a better conversationalist is simply to put yourself into positions that you can later bring up in a conversation.

You've got a decent voice but you don't really talk.

I've re-watched my own VODs from time to time and most of the tangents I go on sort of start like this.

"What did I do today? Did I wake up early? Late? Did I eat breakfast? Speaking of breakfast, what's my favorite meal of the day? What do I normally eat at that time? What's my favorite food? etc etc."

It isn't something I consciously do (and this isn't a real example) but maybe it gives some insight as to what thought process you can use to better fill dead air. These don't have to be back-to-back-to-back motormouthed nonsense but just try and talk normally and branch of from there.

oh and stop playing MOBAs or no one will ever watch you. ever. unless you're pro or already have a big enough audience to act as a buffer once a bunch of people leave, no one is interested.

use them as a stepping stone to a proper commissioned model.

don't use any other 3d maker other than vroid because there are a LOT of cheap 3d model makers with predatory terms and conditions that could fuck you up in the long run like giving up rights to your character design for the company to use.

big one to avoid is Live3D which is run by a sketch chinese company that's ripping off Live2D's name but with a 3d model maker instead.

Part of the problem is that both the GPU and CPU are gonna be working hard just for the stream software and Live2D (though I'm only assuming you're using L2D since you clearly have money, but 3D would have similar constraints for facetracking processing) and that's already going to be a pain for a compact machine like a laptop, even a powerful one. My mid-spec PC when running Live2D and OBS doesn't play nice with games that normally run 40-60fps when I play them casually.
