I read through some reviews and comparisons and ended up using Nativshark as the main learning app, while also occasionally using KanjiPro and AnkiDroid. Also Yomichan for on-the-fly transcription.

Oh, I know Duolingo is complete shit for Japanese (or other Asian languages for that matter). All the tutorials I found recommended books but they're usually aimed at US/UK people so didn't quite fit me. Thanks for the app recommendations I'll check them out.

I tried watching anime series with kanji subs to learn to associate sounds with specific characters and it was kinda working but I already had a bit of knowledge of the Japanese grammar from watching english subbed anime for years, if you're starting from real zero then just watch subbed anime for now.

It's useless on advanced level. But if you "don't even know how or where to start", Duolingo will give you basic vocabulary and a sense for grammar.

You can opt for classes instead, its cheaper and you get a structured way to learn Japanese which is great if you're a beginner because beginners always benefit from structure until they know enough to decide on their own path.

I also recommend HelloTalk which is a language exchange app to practise your Japanese. Just personal opinion only, but most Japanese there are more likely to respond to you if you're white but give it a try anyway.
