Alright, I did some testing on what was essentially a dead stream.

It had 3 viewers when I joined. Within a minute, it ticked up by 1, meaning I added to it. I opened a new window in Incognito and joined the same stream. Again within a minute it ticked up again to 5. Then down to 4 after I closed that window.

I was able to confirm that 'I' at least, am not considered a bot and am counted towards the CCV. Interesting side tidbit, I use ad blocker, so was counted despite that. I ALSO spam emotes (and multi-stream drift) in the vtuber chats since I have memberships to Gura, Ina, Fubuki and Bae, so based on that theory, I should have also been flagged as a bot.

Another interesting tidbits is there were 3 other individuals in the live stream that were spamming the same message over and over and over since it was a giveaway channel (a scam one though so meh). The three of them WERE counted too, and they were spamming often enough, long enough (I was there for a good 15 minutes), for youtube to flag them as bots if it was going to.

Now, take this as you will. Obviously it's not a large enough study to prove everything, but it's something to take into consideration. This 'culling' may actually be targeted at a specific demographic and not the public in general.

I skimmed through, some occasional really spammy message (such as 16 brazilian flags, or 15+ member emotes in one message), and some one word messages of lol or hi, but a large majority of the messages I'm seeing that are missing are something I would be have been seeing on the archived chat too.
