What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Why are you so obsessed with me? It's getting really weird that you've called at least 2 or 3 different people me. Maybe the idea of "Do your own research." for some things isn't as bad as you seem to think? No one said "FUCK OFF RETARD JUST GOOGLE HOW TO SING!" they just said to use google to find information of the massive number of online classes, courses, etc. out there. Why do you get so angry when someone suggests that a person do some research of their own? No one here for the most part knows anything about....well, anything other than what's been parroted over and over like technical help.

You won't learn to sing just from a post on 4chan and you won't learn to sing by just googling it "which no one suggested" but you can learn to sing if someone tells you that you should look into courses, classes, or something from an actual skilled professional.

This post is a great example of what I just said >>15532999 too. Breath Control is an important part of learning to sing, which I also just found in one of those "40 tips for how to sing better." I don't think many are interested in seeing some dry random dude just sit on a chair and badly play an instrument but if you can crack jokes or tell interesting stories etc it will be just like any other creative "just chatting/drawing" stream but with music instead.
That being said aren't 0 view just chatting streams pretty hard to draw in new viewers? Is your current audience interested in seeing it or are they all just going to leave? (If you already are a 0 view it's not like you have anything to lose.)
To directly answer your question: No I would never consider watching someone learning how to play an instrument solely based on that.

For warmups and exercises I use Aussie Vocal Coach. Don't stress too hard over which one, they're all vocalises and you just need one that matches your range.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbAHuHgj0RjadzpDzZ0OWVA
If you don't know your range, check singingcarrots
https://singingcarrots.com/range-test
For technique, the best generic advice I can give is to pay a lot of attention to your vowels, because you sing them different than you say them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRN9t6yyUUc
and when you breathe, breathe in like you yawn, with your mouth wide. Make sure your chest is expanding as you breathe in and it's contracting as you breathe out, and that your shoulders aren't raising as you inhale. This is what people mean by "sing with your diaphragm"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR2772TGrgo
(I haven't actually watched this channel before because I have a coach but she seems like a good resource for beginner stuffs)
The last major thing beginners struggle with is pitch, and all I really have for you is to practice your solfege and try to match pitch well with those vocalises from above.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKH3sNeikg
(People on here also recommend Michael Trimble's videos. I personally find them rambly and hard to follow, but I'll link them here anyway.)

Good luck, and if you have any more specific question ask them here. We could use the bumps.

To the other anon's point, Trimble is somewhat rambly, but if you really wanna get it right, I think his stuff is the only way outside of getting a very good teacher, something you'll pretty much only find in universities (which usually require auditions so gl). I went from totally unable to sing to being able to pretty easily cover two full octaves with consistent tone throughout in about 3 months just doing vocalises while staying mindful of all the little bits and pieces he teaches (try doing these with a tuner, at least for the first maybe month or so). He's a real miracle.

Anyways, the whole reason I started typing this was to give you a guide through his stuff.
Start here: https://youtu.be/AjG1QrlWnac
If you get yourself a tuner app of some sort, just identifying your true mask should inform you on your range a bit. Treat the lowest note you can sing with a totally inactive neck/throat as your bottom for now, absolutely don't try to push it lower. Untrained tenors (especially light lyric ones) can sometimes struggle for their lowest C, light baritones sometimes start with tenor range, it's not terribly important right off the bat.
Then watch this lecture series: https://youtu.be/uRuIpjhVgYs
These establish all the parts that make up good singing (deep breath, breath lean/support, contrary abdominal motion for even emission, point of phonation/staccato, properly using the head for resonance, etc)
Then check out any of his videos for topics you feel you're having a hard time on. He repeats himself a lot, but the stuff he repeats is important, and take it from someone who's in it right now: it's very easy to bypass or forget little bits of what he says here and there. You'll come to appreciate the repetition. Singing is like 15 simple steps just slapped atop regular breathing, but your vocal production is a house of cards; strike one bit and it all topples down. I'll continue this post in a sec with some personal tips, getting a bit long.

For the first few days, don't even focus on hitting notes. Just work on producing a consistent tone or vocal quality with all the pieces aligned as he describes in those first videos. Beautiful might not be the right word if you're hyper-critical of yourself, but this should sound "pure," resonant, full, big but not strained, just throwing adjectives out there. I think you'll know it when you hear it, he provides his own voice for reference along the way.
When you feel you've got tone down, start trying to hold notes, but don't try to go for high notes. Talking for like the first week or two. That may mean you have barely a full octave of range. That's okay. Grasp the fundamentals first, and once you've got the "programming" set for singing, those high notes should come naturally. Definitely report back in if you get to the point you feel your program is fine and you still can't get big resonating high notes, the solution is probably really simple, but it can be frustrating, which leads to brute forcing which can lead to injury. I wasted a lot of time doing high notes wrong, and only finally got them down properly last week. The sound was so much more beautiful I teared up a little. It's worth it to get it right, in every possible sense.
Second, once you're past that introductory stage of programming, messa di voce vocalises are gonna be your bread and butter for improvement. You'll know when you're ready for these because you can't cheat them - either your singing form is perfect (or getting close) and you can adjust the dynamics (while maintaining tone and pitch) with breath alone, or you'll have to strain some part of the body to maintain either your tone or pitch. Identify the strain, eliminate it, and do NOT push loud if there's ANY strain at all, you WILL injure yourself. This is the refinement stage that will last the rest of your singing life. His other videos should help on figuring out where the strain is coming from, and I think we have enough singers here that we may also be able to.

The document thing is very common among streamers. Preparing a list of topics to talk about beforehand prevents dead air or when you run out of things to talk about.

Would you guys recommend making an extremely themed character that you don’t necessarily fit into but want to become? For example, making your character a bard but you’re not skilled in singing or playing an instrument. Or a stand-up comedian when you have no experience in the area? As an indie you don't really need to aim for lore, leave that to the corpos that have groups that can interact themselves in their own universe and even then forced lore could be boring, what you need as an indie is affinity with the character, the less you force your voice to talk in character the better, the more natural your act is the better, the more sense your actions make within the character's personality the better, so the moment you pick "the bard character that is really bad at the start but wants to learn some of the most beautiful songs in the world" you will have to live up to that, if after some time you actually make progress then there should be a character development buff tied to it

Stream itself seems good, you're engaging with chat pretty well and filling air consistently. TFT ain't my speed but it seems like you mostly have a good idea of what you want to stream and looking over past VODs it looks like you haven't pigeonholed yourself into a single game or genre yet. Adoptables seem like they make sense for the people just wanting to dip their toes in at a low price point and aren't really super invested, hence why they rarely if ever make it.

I saw some folks struggling with singing in this thread and thought I'd offer some advice on how to sing in Japanese even if you're not a native speaker.

Understand that singing in japanese is not like singing in english. Everything is broken up into syllables and the nuance pronunciation of those syllables. It sounds complicated but it's not. It's just practice and repetition.

You begin with figuring out the general rhythm and timing like you normally would, then you strive for imitation of the original artist's intonation and emphasis. If you have a good ear you can figure out what in the song is important and improvise later.

Then you go over the romanji lyrics and translation while you do this. Now autistically practice this until it sounds somewhat right to you. Record yourself and play that shit back to find problem areas. Rinse and repeat.

Start with slow simple songs.

i also struggle with picking a game to stream, but idk how often people actually schedule specific games they'll play on each day or if they just turn their stream on and pick what they'll stream that day.
>it looks like you haven't pigeonholed yourself into a single game or genre yet
yeah i didn't want to only play one kind of game on stream, cause i play alot of different games anyway and doing first playthroughs is always fun. but i've heard some people actually prefer to only play one game/genre cause it allows them to build an audience from that specific group. i've played so many things that i've had people from all different games stopping by on occasion, sometimes they're only present for when i'm playing that specific game they found me playing though

>> No.15613195

>>15611648
>sometimes they're only present for when i'm playing that specific game they found me playing though
I think that's somewhat inevitable, the risk you run of being a single game streamer is that your audience and success can become too tied to the whims of how popular that game is or isn't at any given time: see the notable decline of Apex-only streamers in Japan lately for a good example. While you run a better chance of building up an audience that will drop in regardless of what you're streaming (because they're there for you rather than the game) when you branch out a bit. And sometimes you'll end up with some in-between, regulars who don't watch some specific games you play but also aren't limited to only the one game they found you with.

It's not like there's a science to it and there's definitely pros and cons to both. Having a bread and butter game or set of games for establishing a core audience then branching out every once in a while to bring in new eyeballs isn't a bad strategy. If you ask me, I'd take the long term health of a varied audience over being dedicated to a single game or type of content, but that's just me.

less than 1 minute is the rule of thumb. what you show really depends on your content. if you play horror and scream a lot, you might have a short with 10 clips of yourself screaming with rapid 3 second cuts. 2.5 second build up with a 0.5 "perfectly cut" scream. that would take up 30 seconds. maybe you do ASMR lines which might take 30 seconds to properly set and trigger sounds. maybe you sing and you put out 15 second segments of a song's chorus.

How 'discerning' are you with collab requests? If someone approaches you, are you likely to check them out first, or reject if you don't know them?
Does it change when they're bigger/smaller?

I had a long-time viewer, who actually turned out to a streamer, just never mentioned, ask to collab. So we played something for three hours on his stream, but checking the stats out afterwards, literally nobody was watching except me, which isn't new. Now, I don't mind, because he bought me the game, so I boost my steam, and it wasn't on my channel, so I didn't mind too much.

But still - would you do a collab with someone you know of/like/don't know of, if they're averaging 2, 15, 100+?

I stream probably once a week now due to seasonal depression fucking my shit up, but I still average 7 viewers per stream and peak at 15 doing whatever I want. Stream times are random too (2pm, 12am, 6am). I’m not a 0 view, but I’m not popular either.

I aged up the model because people suggested I go with the warmer end of my range and now I'm still lost. None of the clothes I see in booth work. I'm gonna need to paint everything custom from scratch. Which is why I'm asking for advice because everyone I usually ask has no frame of reference. I keep having to start over from scratch. Your current design looks like a white version of Athena nightingale. Listening to your voice and with your normal voice, I'd suggest going something more feminine and cuter than an older more ladylike look because it provides a nice contrast and gives you more of a buff. You can adjust your character in the future or give new costumes if you want to change your look.

Think Nina Saotome or Letania Belladona where their cute looks contrast with their voices which adds more character to them.

Honestly, while I know people tend to fixate on specific character details, what I'm more interested in when it comes to the overall design and visual direction for a chuuba is the underlying theme that ties those design decisions together.

Do you have any particular theme you're aiming for here? Anything you're currently drawing from for inspiration? Or are you just trying to make a character that looks like something you like and figuring out a theme from there?

At least superficially when hearing that, I'd expect more fantasy elements in what I'm seeing. One of the core things when it comes to theming is that it's immediately readable to the viewer if that's what you're going for with your design, so long as you don't go overboard and end up leaning too hard into cliches or generic tropes.

Of course, this is only me speaking for myself (and speaking from a general art standpoint and not a chuuba-specific one), but I find that when I start from a core concept or theme first, that ends up informing a lot of the smaller design decisions I ultimately end up making. If I'm working on a piece that, say, is themed around the old film noir aesthetic, there's such a wealth of content out there to help direct what does and doesn't fit that underlying core. A lot of the guesswork and throwing-at-the-wall process is immediately shored up just by knowing what the staples of the theme I'm working with are, and from there I can go on to make interesting decisions or twists on those common elements.

Either way I'm interested to see whatever direction you end up going with, the design phase is by far my favorite part of chuubas.

You've got a very nice voice. Very warm timbre for your range. I think the lowest notes in the song you chose might be below your anatomical range? Either that or you're just having trouble placing your chest voice to get good resonance. There's some good looking singing advice up the thread just a bit which could probably help in the latter case, but as a personal anecdote for the former problem: I'm a baritone, sang as a bass for a long time in choir, and had a similar problem in my low notes (had to cheat for them with audibly bad form). Nobody ever corrected me until I started learning to sing opera stuff. Anyways, likewise, you might be a mezzo-soprano rather than a contralto.
Whatever the case may be, your default speaking voice is very nice and your singing voice has a lot of potential. Cool instrument, basically.

To answer the question you’re actually asking, they don’t even accept nobodies in the small corpos anymore. Unless there’s a 2view in Luxiem I don’t know about, every member of Nijisanji was busting their asses to get there.

Unfortunately, if you yourself lack sufficient pitch recognition, it's hard to really self-correct because you wouldn't be able to hear what you're doing wrong, even if you recorded yourself. If you can bounce it off a trusted friend and/or someone who won't make fun of you or something, that would be ideal, but again, they themselves need to have a good ear.
While smartphones were kinda fancy new tech when I was in school, I just did a quick search and found apps for pitch recognition. Without testing them out for myself, I'd say something you might try is downloading one of those apps and using it to sort of test yourself. I imagine (I might play with it a bit myself just because I have fuck all to do and would like to do a good deed for the year) you might be able to play isolated vocals from a song to it, see what it says, then go in yourself and see if you can match it.
I don't wanna come across as too much of a smarmy asshole, but for me it's just natural. I remember as a kid doing shit like humming along to the vacuum cleaner (to use a really specific example) until I was perfectly synced with it. It was just a sort of autistic challenge I played with myself.

I guess I'm on the right track then, I've only been singing for a few months now so I'm not too shocked to hear that. I've started to notice improvements from what little I've already done. Like, I can usually tell when I'm sharp or flat to a relative tone acapella, but not by how much, so I kinda have to guess at where the center is. I've heard with enough practice anyone can develop pseudo-perfect pitch by just extrapolating a few notes in advance from a reference, which is where I'd like to end up. I've been considering learning piano to try developing that too, any thoughts?
>>15694309
Oh you've misunderstood I think, my pitch perception is good, I can ear-read well and center my pitch with something actually audible without any guessing if I've heard it for, I dunno, half a second-ish? I just struggle to sight-read music because my sense of like "A is exactly this far from B" isn't as good yet, I think the skill is called audiation? It just makes it tough to get through harder passages without memorization, because I'm not imagining A the correct distance from B until I actually hear it. I've got a good handle on the instrument, but I get lost in sheet music, basically.

1- your sounds are fucked and it's impossible to hear anything in your vod. why is everything so quiet?
2- you have way too much dead air. your vods reek of someone just hitting "go live" on OBS and playing games to themselves. can you write out in a single sentence what value you, as the streamer, are providing to the experience versus just watching a mediocre no commentary playthrough of the same game?

All live entertainment needs you to be doing something that people want to see, clownery, stand-up, singing included. You are a circus monkey.

Assuming that you need to have more pride than a circus monkey from step 1 is will make the start very painful.

Ah, sorry to misunderstand. Then I'll parrot the other person saying just to do soflege, or any other scale repetition.
>It just makes it tough to get through harder passages without memorization, because I'm not imagining A the correct distance from B until I actually hear it.
I can honestly say I basically need a first-pass of a song before I can do it properly. I know there are truly talented folks who will be able to do pitch-perfect sightreads, but I was never one of those. Upon hearing a song once through, though, I sort of internalize the general 'feeling' of the song, i.e. I know that in this bit or that bit it arpeggiates upwards, etc., and then when I see it coming in the sheet I'm like "ah, right, this is THAT part."
Might I ask why you have such a strong desire to be able to sightread? I guess I'm sort of trying to understand where you're coming from. Like, it's a "nice to have", but if you can pitch-match (which you say you can)... what da problem is? Speaking in the context of /asp/, that is, are you really focused on doing blind sightread karaoke as a schtick or something?

i just watched your last stream that autoplayed on twitch, anon. I think you're off to a good start for someone so new. I skipped around to random times and I always caught you giving some sort of commentary, so good job! As someone else said, your design is uninspired, but it's cute you have a cafe theme going on, so if you can commission a better model for yourself down the road, I think that would really help. Also, you sound hesitant at times, I'm not sure if it's because you're shy or just the lack of an active chat gets to you, but try to be a bit more upbeat. Fix your audio settings!

No worries! and sounds like a plan, always good to have affirmation.
>I can honestly say I basically need a first-pass of a song before I can do it properly
That's basically what I'm looking for; I think that perfect sight-read skill is either just a born gift or a lifetime's endeavor, certainly not the sort of thing I expect to have anytime soon in any case. I'm struggling on the quick internalization and mental prediction/imagination of the notes on the sheet, "hearing and thinking like a musician" if you will, being able to fill in the gaps. I feel like I'm still explaining it poorly. But it sounds like I'm doing the right stuff to stop struggling, so all is well.
As for why I want that, I'd just like to be a better musician, and I think its an important skill. I'd like to write my own music someday, so I think it kills two birds with one stone to try and improve in that regard.
