I don't mean to insinuate that the design in a void (lol) is lazy, I think it's quite good. But taking an established character and relabeling it as one's own is lazy on the part of the taker. Like if someone just palate-swapped a well-known character and debuted with it as their avatar, that'd be lazy.

There is an oversaturation of anime character design and there is bond to be overlap. Your friend is blind if he can't see the clear parallel. There is nothing wrong with creating similar looking character. There are a billion cat girl and they all manage to get distinct trait. If she is admitting to copying/ripping off then that makes it acceptable. I mean, she should still give some credit for the artist of the original work, but the main thing is if she's willing to admit that it's a parody or derivative work and not all her own original idea.
