Yes there is. Aside of >>15212681 you can see people who knows how to keep useful items (like a boost, the amp to destroy blue shell, or the shells), and then using said items to mix max their time doing shortcuts or breaking into second place if a blue shell is coming.
While Mario Kart is RNG fulled, you can use and manage almost everything, except the lighting but even that, you can go back for the coins and boost or go ahead to create space.

If you watch the try hard holo jp's play, they all mastered driving all of the court and came down to optimizing items and shortcuts. Using all items efficiently and having counterplay or recovery play is difficult. Map knowledge is also difficult with knowing all of the short cut, the optimal path, and the areas to cut through with mushroom.
