They work for an idol company and vaguely call themselves idols (not always, but sometimes).
Other companies don't claim to be idols and sometimes (as is the case with Niji EN) actively reject the title when someone else calls them one. Not that Nijisanji doesn't have idols (Uiha is more of an idol than most of HoloJP, frankly), but it's understood that it's not the default.

That said, them not going hard on the idol thing doesn't change that there's a group culture of at least paying lipservice to being seiso (even if just to joke about it because you aren't), while not even that is present elsewhere.

I used to be a nijisanji fan until someone on this website called me a niji "n word" which I found very offensive and demoralizing. Now I only watch Takanashi Kiara exclusively.
