People watch hololive because its hololive. Because the name carries prestige and because its popular in the public eye. Stream quality is tertiary. Its like how people will always buy an apple product, regardless of how it chalks up to the rest. The most important aspect of being a vtuber is being in hololive, and of course it takes talent to get in, but once you do you can just hang your hat and enjoy infinite sucess for no effort.

The issue wasn't exactly "stealing code" it was that streamlabs called itself "Streamlabs OBS" because it used part of the OBS code for it (OBS is open source). OBS said "we'd rather you didn't tack on the name OBS to a product we don't own" and Streamlabs said "lmao" and paid for ads that displayed it over OBS when you searched for OBS on google.

What does Hololive actually do for their talents?

They are scooping up all the independent vtubers, taking control of them, and then restricting any collabs with outsiders. They are basically claiming a monopoly on certian talents. So if you're an independent vtuber, and you want to collab with Pekora, you are not free to do so unless you join up with hololive. Hololive has a monopoly on Pekora. Thus, instead of 100 independent vtubers all making their own videos and collabing freely together, instead you have this "parasitic corporation" claiming a monopoly on them, and skimming off the top of their donations.

Most hollywood actors don't work for an agency, their agency works for them. They are free to dismiss their manager whenever they want. They have independent firms that promote their name, they don't have an overlord company doing this for them. Also, they can work on whatever movie they want, with whatever actors they want. They don't have a company restricting access to them, and not allowing them to work with certain actors, or on certain movies. So why are things reversed in the world of vtubers?

I could understand if hololive was providing some actual material value to the streams. Supurb models, superb management, superb idol shows. But this isn't really the case at all. And even if it was, why are they not working as an independent contractor, why are they dominating the relationship as the employer?

Their biggest strenghth is their algorithm manipulation of youtube, and controlling access to certain key people within the japanese idol industry. If you want access to some of these artists, you have to go through hololive. This is parasitic to say the least.

The same thing can happen in the Vtuber scene. Some who-tier indies get scouted, they enter an agency, they grow big, and then, if they want to, try to be independent again. Hololive, Nijisanji etc. are the agencies chubas will enter with this purpose in mind. It just so happens that Hololive outpaced the other agencies and grew really big, so talents funnel to them and they can use their brand power to establish a monopoly.
Leaving them is more difficult however, since, unlike an actor who has the roles they played tied to their name, vtubers have to remake their identity, as they usually can't keep the rights for their character. Kson in this case is an example of how it would go for someone to leave the corp they're in to be an indie again.

The singular primary thing that Hololive actually "provides" (from the perspective of a new talent / potential applicant) is the access to / attention of their big fanbase they've cultivated over the years, i.e. what's called the "brand buff", that basically guarantees a six-figure subcount right out of the gate nowadays before you even had your first stream.
Why else do you think they have thousands of people applying for every open spot they have every year? Of course all those indies looking to score what is arguably the most profitable position in the vtuber industry aren't doing it because they're especially enamored by Cover's "superb models, management or idol shows". Those things are at best just incidental (and arguable at worst), in the grand scheme of things it's all just about the eyeballs in the end, and Hololive for better or worse means you get handed the opportunity to appeal to the biggest fanbase in the vtuber industry.
In other words, it's a "shortcut", because sure, you could try to grind it out and hope to build up a similar six-figgy subcount / four-figgy viewcount by yourself over a few years, but that's hard work mostly doomed to failure, whereas scoring a Hololive spot is basically an instant guarantee for that. (Before anyone misinterprets, this is just a description, and not any kind of value judgement on whether any talent does or doesn't "deserve" it, also most of them still had to grind alot before Hololive, to build up the portfolio that allowed them to get in in the first place).

Are they, actually? Less dramatizing, more facts. HoloEN only has 10 people right now, 11 if you count Irys, meanwhile there are hundreds, probably thousands other EN vtubers. Hololive isn't "scooping them all up", in fact many people complained about how slow they were in expanding their gens, and the vtubers they did pick up weren't even the "biggest" ones available, but rather mostly B- or C-tier. Other companies have added much more people much more quickly to their roster, so if you think the scene is getting fished dry, it's not really by Hololive only.

I agree in general but kson recently talked about some expensive system project she is working on behind the scenes on top everything she's already doing. She has enough money to retire and coast if she wanted to but she turned being a vtuber into a self-run business she's investing in with two managers that she has to pay, warehouse rentals, and whatever else goes into day to day operations to make it safe and stable. Those kind of ongoing expenses add up and there is no guarantee that she will continue to be successful in the future, so despite her success I get the feeling she really can use every bit she gets.
