depends what you mean by fake. At least in hololive, most of them have a bit of themselves in their characters. None of them are using voice changers, and none of them are guys in real life, and aside from Luna, none of them are completely made up characters. Rather its themselves playing the lore. The more outspoken ones, Miko, Pekora, Coco, are probably slightly exaggerating their personalities, but it is them at heart, not a completely fake character.

Also member streams can cut some of those layers away, as they will tend to be more comfortable around people they know are already their fans. I'm a member to alot of them, and they are almost universally more chill and low tension in those streams, sometimes they let down their guard too much..

from me, an outsiders perspective, a normal streamer may sometimes put on an act for stream, and a vtuber is always putting on the act because they're not actually the avatar. from what i've seen some avatars come with lore and stories (been watching haachama, and i realize i came too late to that), i guess i'm retarded in that i'm constantly thinking of the person behind the avatar having to move around. i haven't seen a chill stream yet or know of any chill vtubers.
