The secret is to not rely on motivation and instead be disciplined. Just do your fucking reps, ideally at the same time every day for the same duration every day. Then force yourself to do them even when you don't want to. Eventually reps will become a habit and you'll be on the road to inevitable success.

Yeah I get you, my parents were similar. Its absolutely demoralizing to realise how damaged you are simply because the first 15 or so years of your life was managed by equally damaged people. That was what helped me train discipline, the fear of failing for my future kids. But it was pretty much forcing myself to do simple life things that other people around me did as easily as they breathed.

Deprive yourself of pleasure for two weeks or so. I'm not some no-fap cultist, but spend two weeks without flooding your brain with a constant stream of dopamine from porn, youtube, videogames, etc. Do a variety of mundane yet productive things for a couple of weeks and you'll come to appreciate the things you enjoy more. This in itself will build discipline and will help you apply that experience to things you actually want to do/learn.

I genuinely don't understand the point of kanji from what I've learned of Japanese. Hiragana and katakana take way less time to write and are way easier to memorize. I feel like the only reason people use it is because Japanese doesn't put spaces between words. If there's any other reason for it I'd be open to elucidation.

>I feel like the only reason people use it is because Japanese doesn't put spaces between words
that definitely can be one of the reasons.
another reason would be that kanji is faster to read if you can recognize it and it (usually) takes up less space compared to kana .
plus there's a lot of words in japanese that sound the same but have different meanings, so if you were to write all sentences only in kana it could sometimes get confusing, sure you could be able to tell things apart based on the context of the sentence but that can take time and sometimes that may not be possible, kanji can help clear out that kind of confusion.

Same reasons English spelling reforms will never go through, everyone is used to it and everything is already written in it so there'd be a massive cultural break where children couldn't read anything written before the time of the reform that wasn't translated.
>>1425135
>another reason would be that kanji is faster to read if you can recognize it
This isn't really a reason, the same thing happens within English, you recognise words as a whole rather than character by character

If you're not a manga/anime fan, start with Duolingo and suppliment it with your own learning. If you're still memorising kana, Duolingo on mobile has an okay flash card system, but you'll definitely need an Anki deck (Anki is a free flashcard program).

After you reach the end of the duolingo JP tree, or before that if you feel it's no longer providing value, start consuming other media in Japanese and find Japanese speaking pen pals. (This can be easily done on leddit)

When you're comfortable enough, change your phone/PC language to Japanese, or play Vidya in Japanese, and stay immersed in the language to retain your knowledge of Japanese.
