I would change that and say good rigging can't hide a terrible design, which is what most western vtubers suffer from. A good design matters much more since asian artists will create amazing pieces based on inspiration from the design alone. Also, really bad rigging can always be fixed, a shit design you are almost stuck with on a corporate level unless you change models every single month like some wvt, and even then the new models they get are barely any better in design than the old ones or worse.

That's why most indies are 2views. They couldn't figure out that model ultimately matters little in the long run. Models might help attracting people attention at the start, but pass 2-3 streams, it's the contents that keep people hooked
In all seriousness, leaving Cover asides, I've always find it dumb how indies put so much focus on their models. I can understand upgrading your model after having a solid fanbase as a way to reward yourself and your fans (making it a nice little event too), but buying one for thousand(s?) buck when you don't even know how long you will be sticking around sounds like throwing away money for virtually nothing
