The soles are traditionally a part of the body that isn't exposed to the public. Sure sandals and footwraps have been around for thousands of years, but even the Ancient Egyptians realized that feet could be sexual as fuck.
In this day and age we don't think anything of it, go back a few hundred, even thousands of years and there weren't any people showing their soles to other people, unless they were intimate or a couple. They treated the sole almost akin to genitalia, it was taboo for a women to expose her feet to another, especially a male.
