Why do you watch Japanese VTubers? Can you actually understand them?

>> No.13172438

Liars will say yes.
People that can won't even reply.
People that want to will say they are doing their reps.

I watch clips and highlights, unless they're playing a game I'm interested in or a game I'm curious to see how they'd react to.

For example, Miko's playthrough of Portal. I don't understand what she's saying, but I can appreciate her thought process in puzzle solving

For the most part, I treat it like I would watching subbed anime. I'd usually watch a VOD I can't understand if it pertains to a particularly interesting clip or moment in a game.

This.
Except I won't even pretend I am doing reps since that would require I focus on what is being said so I can understand it, since I don't have the passive listening skills for nip yet.

普通に海外のVtuberより質あるからね
I came in with the idea that I'd watch them to learn Japanese
I then quickly realized it was the converse, I was learning Japanese to watch them.
Yes I do understand. I typically enjoy them more in differing ways than I do western streamers, but there are western streamers I prefer more as well. It just depends.

seriously, i can understand Luna around 40% of what she says, that's more than enough to enjoy and react properly on her chat, but not good enough to understand a zetsudan

I was looking for an interesting VTuber before EN, and Korone being Korone doesn't require much (if any) understanding of Japanese.
Between listening to literally every minute of every single of her streams, and actually doing some reps, I can follow her conversation quite well at this point. Though I still appreciate the translators when it comes to stuff like sleep-paralysis or automated soap dispensers.

Simple, if I watch a JP or ID chubba then I don't know if they're saying something interesting or funny. If I watch an EN chubba then I know they aren't.

Don't worry about not knowing about ガイガイ specifically, it's the equivalent of not knowing insults/slang that exist purely /here/. If you know ガイジ you can figure out what it means to ガイガい. If you don't know ガイジ already then you don't need to bother knowing what it means b/c you don't hang out where it's used regularly. If you know what it means but can't figure out ガイガイ then you're 本物のガイジやろww.

I don't but I only watch JP chuubas for their music stream like Luna's electone stream, Sora's karaoke stream or noir's aftenoon piano stream which I miss dearly so I don't think I really need to do my reps for now

I used to watch EN Vtubers, but now, I just watch JP Vtubers. Why? Well, I enjoy watching them, even if I don't understand it. In addition to that, I only watch my oshi's streams, and she doesn't stream that much; although, I do want to learn Japanese, for the sake of making a docx containing everything you need to know about her.

lmao ガイガイis something you do or a descriptor not a noun, think about like how other onomonopetia phrases where you put the same thing twice like ワクワク , works the same conceputally for the most part. ガイジ is the noun and ガイ can be used as a suffix like (blahblah)fag depending on situation.

>> No.13193334

They're cute & they make me laugh
I might catch 3-5% of what they say from years of playing Japanese vidya & watching anime. I started learning Nip earlier this year but I have to do job interview prep now so that's been my only non work thing I've been doing, but I'll make it eventually

It depends on the stream. I don't need to understand Luna when she's playing music, and I don't need to understand Sora when she's playing Minecraft. There's also people in chat that help out with quick translations of what is being said at the time.

Thanks man. Trying my hand in playing a jap game (RJ328940), and it's a good reality check on how much I actually know versus how much I thought I did. My N4 grammar is passable but has huge gaps, and the 800 or so jouyou kanji I'm missing make a tangible impact on my reading ability.
Only thing I can do is more reps I guess

If you've been a weeb for at least longer than a decade and you still can't somewhat understand JPs I feel sad for you.

>> No.13197071

I picked up a lot of vocabulary and some phrases from anime and VNs. Tried to read some VNs in JP using AGTH and Atlas translator but got filtered, my reps were lacking too much at the time.
As for reps I learned kana long ago, I think it was at least 8 years ago. I just stumbled upon names of characters from an anime I watched written in kanji and in kana. I knew it's based on syllables already so I was like "ah, so these kana symbols mean these syllables, got it". Then I learned kana really fast but my reading pace was always pretty bad. Reading chat and Twitter posts from chuubas actually made it skyrocket, I can read kana almost at the same pace as English (not my native language).
I've been in and out of learning grammar, vocabulary and some kanji since I learned kana. Never actually made it past some beginner books until chuubas. Shortly before getting into chuubas I watched some anime on Animelon though, pretty helpful.
I got introduced to chuubas in early 2020 and it didn't even occur to me to try finding some EN chuubas (or chuubas speaking in my language, god forbid). I kinda bruteforced it at first, found out that I sucked hard at reading and understood maybe 10-15% of what was said. I picked up my reps so had a combo of listening to chuubas + reading chat and tweets + brushing up on grammar (Cure Dolly videos were really helpful, may she rest in peace) + lazily learning a bit of new vocabulary and kanji (but I actually picked up quite a bit of basic kanji just from reading chat and Twitter regularly). Now I think I understand up to 80% in simple game streams and up to 60% in zatsudan streams, given that I always keep jisho open to quickly check info about new words I hear. Still have a long way to go, these percentages can drop quite a bit when chuubas are talking about niche topics, talk faster, use more vivid vocabulary, make some puns and references etc.
