The pandemic and the timing of the debut does give it some context, but while I understand that audiences liked the memes, clips, and the karaoke, it's more that I don't know what made them so appealing to people, especially normalfags, in the first place. I saw the clips and watched the singing shark a bit at the time the karaoke was being posted everywhere, but they didn't pique my interest. At the time a close friend was more into Hololive than I was, so he was talking about Gura a lot, and posts about 'a' and the karaoke were literally all over the internet, but again I was pretty indifferent (not *negative*, I stress, just indifferent). When I found my oshi, some of that interest naturally spread to the other members, so I watched some of Gura's full-length streams, and yeah, she's pretty good, but the instant appeal I just don't really get. Just odd to me that she clicked with audiences so fast.

It has more to do with gacha, anitubers and bandwagonning, mixed to the context of the pandemic.
A TON of gachafags got introduced to Hololive through the Azur Lane collab in early 2020 and the anitubers, hate on as much as you want (I do plenty), started making videos about vtubers not long after that basically conflated Vtubers with Hololive for an audience of millions.
When HoloEN was announced they had already a global audience who basically were primed Hololive's Vtubers, watching JP streams without even understanding and consuming clips like mad to the point that clip channels actually became profitable - so lots of people jumped the bandwagon.
Last, the "A"-clip was the perfect meme-bait for the kind of retarded clipfag EOPs who had made Miko's stay home clip become viral - so Gura grew a lot and once you hit it big, the algorithms push it even more and it further snowballs into being even bigger.
