You need to learn efficiently. You can learn a big percentage of the language just from knowing the most commonly used words and verbs and some conjugations

The internet says that if you learn the most commonly used 1000 words in the japanese language, you'll be able to understand more or less 70% of casual daily conversations you come across.

Then you just fill the blanks through context or google's help and slowly start increasing your vocabulary while getting most of what the talents are saying.

I tried Japanese, but the confusing grammar, relative uselessness (given the current glut of Japanese learners), raging hate on for unskilled foreigners, shit work culture and ongoing colonization by wealthy global citizens took the piss out of my motivation. Japan should've continued being for the Japanese. Instead, it's getting melanin enriched by the globohomo military.

Currently thinking of a couple directions to go in now, but I'm keeping that to myself.

Reminder that Bae had a headstart with Nihongo due to being Cantonese. It probably wasn't much effort for her to learn the characters either. IRyS also had it easy because she's a hafu. Ina had a decent starting point too because of her gook background, meaning the grammar is no issue at all (Kronii can probably get to a decent level for the same reason). The only one who legitimately did her moon reps with no handholding and has a decent level to show for it is Kiara.

All you really need to get the wanikani experience for free is to download anki, core2k/6k, do 10 cards a day every day while reading ANY grammar book (except Genki), until you can read anything at a comfortable pace.
From then on you're going to be learning through exposure, which is smooth sailing and fun.
It can happen in as soon as 3 months of grinding.

Very. Kanji are the biggest pain in the ass when learning japanese, but it turns out that once you learn them they carry you through 90% of the language.
Also, while can get the SRS for free with Anki, I think the mnemonics are well worth the sub price.

How do y'all maintain your motivation to study a language? I have other self improvement stuff that between it & work saps most of my energy. I nominally want to learn Japanese, but it's basically impossible to dedicate more than like 20 minutes to it, and if I do that I know I'll never actually learn the language because it will take so long.
