By that time some of these people were at least middle-aged already, others were old. And they're even older now. Talk to your parents and grandparents about it and how they used the word when they were young.

I was deep into adulthood before I realized I was at the younger end of millennial and the people I had thought were the millennials were the then-unnamed generation that became zoomers (Gen Z). Most millennials did not seem to realize they were millennials because the term was used as a pejorative for young people but nobody ever used the phrase Gen Y while they do say Gen X, Gen Z, Boomer and Silent Gen.
