Yeah, personally I thought it's easily the most out-there set of designs overall, compared to earlier gens.

The only ones that seem like they maybe could have appeared in other gens, would be Ame and Gura since detectives and sharkteeth girls aren't a unique thing. Ina/Kiara/Mori are really specific/derived things. They're not really monstergirls but Ina is close-ish to one and that is really fuckin' weird compared to the usual Holo roster.

I rather hope the next gen isn't too gimmicky like this one. I thought it was a pretty fucking risky calculation to lead off with quirky as fuck designs like Ina and Kiara. I mean it's possible Ina/Kiara might have been more popular if they didn't have such niche designs as it stands. They're successful yeah but relative to sharkgirl (which is kind of trendy and needs no getting used to), a ""reaper"" which looks exactly like a normal cute girl with a goth outfit, and a regular human? Not as much. I bet if they looked a little more normal they would have been probably more successful.

Gen 4 is all fantasy themed too, really it would have no trouble at all being Fantasy pt2 and they just didn't call it that. Gen 5 was almost all fantasy too besides Nene.

The clear fantasy theme but no specified narrative gives 3rd gen a bunch of different possible stories and that's not a bad thing. Their story could be an adventure shonen like One Piece/Fairy Tail, a DnD-inspired adventure comedy like Dungeon Meshi, or even be a fantasy slice of life with the occassional battle.
