Higher information density languages are generally slower. Chinese and English are actually spoken at near identical speeds, but languages that have less information density (Japanese is a language that holds very low information density due to its limited phonetic system) tend to be spoken faster. Not only that but some words we have in English you might have more than sla single word to convey it. Like the word hunger. You need something that "has" the hunger and the word itself. I don't think I can get away with saying just "¿hambre?" in Spanish but in English I can say "hungry?" Then again I'm far from fluent so I can be totally wrong with how native speakers speak compared to what's taught.

Depends on the context. For example, I think saying "¿hambre?" would make sense if you hear someone else's stomach growl. In that case it's more like making a question about *something* that happened instead of directly asking someone "¿Tienes hambre?".

But, yeah, English words generally have less syllables than their Spanish analogues; sentences use less words to convey the same message; and its grammar allows for it (easy example: compound words such as ****-like).
