I have a bad relationship with my mom ever since she broke up with my dad, I moved out and had a chance to talk to him without her around over a few beers. I always liked her in the past but it slowly grew on me she gave zero fucks. I tried to tell her about school, she'd listen but ultimately just begin another topic entirely. The things she DID understand were like small trinkets I mentioned or little ideas I said into nothing she then suddenly tried to do. It felt obsessive, but I am the only survivor of three siblings after all. With my dad I'd talk about the stuff actually interesting me, physics, the universe, philosophy, stuff like that. He was just a construction worker but he had his own share of practical math to show me and attempt to solve together which was fun in the little time we had.
So when he later told me his side about the breakup, what led up to it, how he confronted her about it several times, lots of things began to fall into place. She actively tried to talk him down at any opportunity, lashing out in misunderstanding about whose fault it really was because from her perspective, it couldn't be her. But if he brings home the money and she spends it recklessly in a poor family without taking his ideas with it into consideration, I felt he was in the right.
Nowadays I refuse to talk to her passionately. I let her blab her 30 mins or however long it takes on the phone and go on with my day, not actually having listened. It hit me hard when I found my letter from Japan with all the souvenirs unopened, I thought I could explain all the nice stuff to her. Instead she made a wall picture out of magazine cutouts of "japan" when I had 42GB of photos. We never looked through those together either. I took all the souvenirs back home and gave them to Kouhais at university. I never talk about work to her. I tried once, she wouldn't pay attention outright. Fuck that, not wasting my time with that cunt any longer than I have to.

A bad flash flood hit, some kid 30 miles north had died, and the only other adult had heart issues at around 11,000 feet elevation pretty far away from the base camp. Ended up hiking 110 miles. He's a veteren, but that ordeal was proof to me that tough times make strong men.
I was fairly depressed before, no suicide attempts but came close. After that ordeal, I was humbled. Still a lazy sack of shit, still uncertain of the future, but I adopted the "burn that bridge when we get to it" mindset. There isn't a reason to end it all, but I'll work it out once it's an issue.

You can frequently test out of them if you're good, but if it's content you've not done in a while, or the basics are important to your degree, you'll end up taking some basic-level courses anyway. For example, my degree is in Game Design Theory. I think that one of the biggest issues US colleges have regarding new candidates is that SATs aren't very good at differentiating candidates, and thus are pretty piss-poor academic performance indicator, no wonder you have to supplement it with extracurriculars or essays.
I know they removed Subject Test SATs recently, but let me give you an example: the Chemistry Subject Test was so easy, at one point ~30-40% of the people who took it got maximum scores. I happened to take it that year too, and I finished the whole thing in 15 minutes for 800 points. How the hell are you supposed to distinguish good students using that?

It depends on the university. All universities require at least an SAT or an ACT score, and they look at those scores, your high school grades, and the rest of your application to decide whether or not you even get in. After acceptance, at least at mine, those same scores determined whether or not there were even more courses you had to take. ie. score below a certain threshold in the Math section, be forced to start with College Algebra or whatever the lower remedial math course is called. Score high enough, jump right to Calculus I.
And then on top of that you have "General Education" requirements for all degrees. You must sit through at least...I don't know, 6 hours of math, 6 hours of science, 6 hours of some behavioral shit, 6 hours of humanities, 6 hours of English (usually Composition I and II - writing), and more. Undergrad was over a decade ago, so I'm just pulling things out of my ass and shit I vaguely remember counseling students with when their actual counselor was either gone or slammed.
We don't just have the one "entry text" - some people come in with IB credits that transfer somehow, some people take AP Advanced Placement exams that "score them out" of certain courses. I taught kids in high school that ended up testing out of Calc I, Physics I, etc.

Most Uni classes have pre-requisite classes you have to take. For Lower division classes you can sometimes waive the requirement if you took what is called an AP Test in Highschool and got a score that is satisfactory for the school. For example: I was able to waive Calc 1, 2 Physics Mechanics, English Composition, both Euro and American History, and Economics since I passed the tests for each of those classes.

Other than that we have what is called an SAT, a test that gauges your general skill in English and Math. I got a decent score 1320 out of 1600, but I wasn't tryharding to get the best grade so there's that.

Sounds pretty complicated, here most you have to do is check if the faculty you want to frequent has a limited number of people able to enroll or not. You do a test to see what kind of knowledge you have of the subject and see of you pass. If the faculty you chose is "closed number" you didn't pass and have to retake it, otherwise you can still enroll but have to take extra classes
