I personally don't think it's really whether or not gens have a theme so much as the quality (read: cuteness/sexyness/both) of each individual one. Having a fantastic design doesn't really need the gen to have a theme, that is a false conclusion they're running. Just one of many signs EN's management is by marketing people who don't actually know vtubers that well and are trying to apply generic business sense to them, off of data/market research. It's pretty common for Japan to have middle/upper managers who pretend real hard they know what they're doing but don't, and literally cannot be questioned by the underlings and so install less-than-optimal policies and decision making.

I mean it's fucking obvious, it's the individual designs and talents are what you can read tea leaves off of, not gen themes. Thinking dropping gens for EN1/2 will do anything at all or matter one bit, is rather sad and delusional micromanagement rearing its head. You can see it reflected in all the recent gens really, it's design+talent. All of Gen 3 just-so-happened to have fucking excellent designs. Flare's was in theory good, but in practice lagged because ugly gecko face - and inclined when that was fixed. Nene was always the "most boring" Gen 5 and Botan debuted in the lead and still holds it. Polka's personality works in spite of her tacky design and we just overlook it now even though it was not that well-liked initially. Kiara was panned hard for her weird/ugly outfit the second it was revealed and everyone immediately recognized Ame and Gura as super cute, etc. Suddenly the whole mood around AZKi has completely changed now that has a super cute redesign etc. Cover knows that's what it's all about really, this isn't revelatory. Just wanted to take a moment to rant about one of the many out-of-touch EN branch management calls.

I mostly agree that character designs are like the #1 thing for a vtuber's success, but there's other elements involved that definitely require analytics and business sense. From their voices to the type of content they stream to just avoiding early yabs that can tank your viewership(Kiara, Anya, Towa) there's a lot of things that have a disproportionate effect on success.

Hell even the order in which they debut can have a huge impact. Look at how successful Ollie has been for HoloID because she was the first to debut. Reine had the most hype pre-debut due to being designed by Pochi and her actual debut stream had no yabs and included an original song and her voice and personality are adorable. Why was Ollie more popular than Reine? Because inbetween their debuts Anya debuted and her debut was so scuffed it killed interest in HoloID2. Picking the order to deliberately debut them in order of strongest to weakest is pretty important.

The theme can also be important as it builds a sense of cohesion across the gen and lets them play off eachother better with themed in-jokes. It's not strictly necessary though, since HoloFive famously spent like 6 months together pre-debut just bonding. Cover seems to care quite a bit about cohesion in their talents though so maybe they're at least "encouraged" to choose designs that work well together.

It also makes it easier to market them as a unit for sponsorships and stuff. For example HoloMyth could easily have a game built around them or a set of characters in a gacha game, unlike HoloFive or Gen 2 who are just a random collection of themes. This isn't something they've explored as much because HoloEN is fairly new but it's definitely an advantage when you don't have a huge cast of characters like HoloJP.

The idea of gen-specific games/manga etc is kind of missing the point that as a whole, the lore really doesn't matter at all for the talents and many just never had any at all to begin with.

Stuff made up by authors is a totally different thing than vtubers streaming games and singing etc. They're going to have to basically make one continuity for everything, probably some isekai-like thing with our normal world (for ones like Matsuri) and some fantasy land where things not just from gen 3 come from but also would be for any fantasy themes like most of gen 4, Lamy, Ayame etc. That seems to be the plan with Holo Alt. So it isn't really a big deal if a gen is all in one theme or not because their chars won't necessarily all be introduced as one unit either.

The author's pen may not have them interact or know each other in sequence anyway, like for example if some human Holos went to the fantasy place and eventually wound up on Marine's ship, which then stops by Pekoland or whatever where they first meet Pekora? They'll have mixed gens inevitably. So that'll basically have to happen anyway because 1/2/5 etc already have clear mixes of regular humans and fantasy people, there's no point trying to keep them in sequence unless they made a game or manga only for the ENs not involving any JPs, which I guess is possible but sounds kind of how should I say, prejudiced, against the ENs by not letting them collab with JPs even in fucking fiction.

I do believe Haachama is a really creative person, she always come up with something to entertain their audience and I like how she asks Haaton for suggestions on member streams. However this thing is getting really exhausting, it's been a month since the whole Haato arc and I'm sure Haachama will keep doing this for at least another month.
