alright, lets do some story time here.

If I were to go over pretty much everything in the process for importing the models for hfz...

initially, I had the idea of "Well, if we need 3D models, why not rip 2K models...?" and I had a bit of experience with 3ds max in making parts, and TWbro was there to help since he knew more about blender than I did, so we thought, yeah, why not?

So, initially, TWbro and i thought this'd be... well, we didnt think it'd be easy, per say, but we didnt think we'd stumble across the eldritch horror lying at the bottom of the abyss of 2K models.

We googled it and found 1 post in the results guiding us to our 1 way of getting models: ninja ripper. Currently, there's a free version of ninjaripper and a paid version. we tried 1.7.1, which is the free version. After jumping through some hoops to actually get the fucking addon to work with blender and failing to succeeed, we eventually managed to get it to work using the 3ds max plugin (we'd hoped to export as an obj later) and gasped in horror at what we saw upon loading up the files it spit out.

Fuckin' geometry everywere. shooting off into the distance, some parts completely black and unselectable, it was basically like a garbled mess on screen. "What the fuck?" was what we thought and we initially thought something had fucked up. But after deleting some of the triangles fucking everywhere we FINALLY came upon the model in question. I dont remember exaclty who we used as a test. I think it was rratler or artia for the first test...? Anyway, we saw their model, completely gray and untextured, and thought YEAH! WE GOT A MODEL! WE CAN DO THIS.

we were naïve.

2k model imports come in seperate parts. the torso is a part, the leg is a part, each eye is a prt, each individual tooth is a part, etc. So on accident, because I was new to blender, i accidentally dragged the arm off the model instead of the whole body trying to get it centered on the origin. Except I now had a copy of the arm and the original arm was still there.

What.

so I went back and tried to figure out if I accidentally did a copy function. I kept dragging the arm to the side and getting more copies until I suddenly there were no more copies. What the fuck...? Then I saw the list of files over in the import section and tapped away at the model's chest. one, two , three, four... eight, and then it looped back to the file I was keeping an eye on.

There were 8 of the same model stacked on top of each other.

So at this point, my memory is kinda hazy, but I do remembre getting rid of the parts and eventually figuring out that to put textures on a model you need a UV map. Luckily, ninja ripper does have UV mapping.

Except it only correctly UV maps ONE of the 8 models stacked on top of each other. and in that 1, there were 2~4 other UV maps.

At that point, I think I gave in and downloaded the updated 2.0.4 for ninjaripper, in hopes that 1. it'd actually work with blender, and 2, maybe it'd fix the 8 different models thing.

and se we descended one layer further into the abyss...

so, ninjaripper 2.0.4 is an entirely different beast. Unlike 1.7.1, it is much, much faster, and 2, it has different import options.

Unlike 1.7.1, it actually seemed to work real well with 2k20. we did another test export and found it loaded faster in blender too. Didnt have to wait approximately 20 minutes for it to import and instead only took 1 minute or so. hooray. Oh, and the addon packaged with it actually functioned in blender. cant forget that.

We initally just exported the match on default export settings. For some reason, ninja ripper 2.0.4 has a need to manually input the y value of the thing you are ripping. Basically, if you get it wrong, all your shit that you imported get's slanted to one side. As an example, a sphere will turn egg shaped.

So our test match imported great! ... well, kind of. There was some slant to it, you see, and we thought "eh, we'll just guess and check the y-value ourselves." Again, a sign of pure naivete.

We switched over from our test match in the ring to ripping the model from the character creation screen since ninja ripper rips EVERYTHING and makes like, 600 different files to import and the character creation screen has less geometry forit to retrieve, cutting down the number of imported objects by half and saving me harddrive space.

And thus begins the tale of slant alton.

You see, we did some tests on alton because he has a super simple appearance and the character creation screen actually takes place in a sphere, and that gets imported too. We could tell if wee were off with teh Y-value if that sphere got all egg shaped.

after hours of trying, we were not able to get a Y value that worked.

SO, we looked for other solutions. Turns out, there's something called "matrix import" that uses a value from the log file on export to do the proper import. So we searched the log file a bit and found a matrix value listed under "float4x4 g_fm44ViewProj" and NOW we had a sphere and a proper model to work with.

And so the journey continues.

anyway, continuing on, we could FINALLY get a proper model with 2.0.4 and in blender without having to export an obj from 3ds max. woo.

Now to actually work with this jank AF model.

With 2.0.4, instead of 8 different models stacked on top of each other, it is now reduced to 2 models. One of those two models are the one we want to keep. The other is just weird trash that you can discard. Luckily, the meshes happen to be in order, so all the correct meshes tend to be within where the first correct one starts and the last one ends. So as an example if the first correct part is mesh_76_0 and the last correct mesh is mesh_120_54, then everything in between will be correct and everything else can be discarded.

How can you tell whhich one is correct? Well it'll have the UV maps. The othe ones will only have one dot in the corner to represent the UV map so those go in the delete pile. and are unnecessary.

So initiall,y tw bro and I were using blender 2.93 since its just so nice and clean and stff, and we thought, hey, we could always export it as an OBJ once we get the model textured and to a point where we could port it back to blender 2.79 to finish the process.

The thing with ninja ripper 2.0.4 is, it auto assigns a texture to a UV. and in the file itself, which you can open with a notepad, there are usually about 5~15 different dds files listed (the kind of file used to texture the models here) and it always selects the first one.

The first one is always wrong.

so you get theres odly colored models that all use the same texture....

So initially we just decided to go through the folder of items and go through the textures to find the right one. this is annoying since ninja ripper rips like, 300 different textures too. Eventually we learned the open the actual file strat in notepad and copy pasted each into file exporer to locate the right one, but it was an annoyance...

So, eventually, we decided to try texturing our first model. Dimesman. you know him. the egg himself. And we actually got him all textured and stuff.

Now another thing to learn about 2k model imports: they have no skeleton nor do they come with weights. The skeleton lets you pose a model. The weights kinda dictate how much the skeleton moves the model. So if I have an arm bone and most of the arm is painted red, or one in this case, then the arm will move one to one with the bone. Or at least thats how I understand it.

So that leaves doing it with vertex positioning... aka manually positioning the model by moving around the skin layer.

TWbro and I were like, fuck that.

We really should have gone with it in the first place, since we actually tried to bind a skeleton to our model manually to pose it, only to realize that autoweights completely and utterly fuck up and that moving the arm will also move like, the back of his head for some reason.

At this point, we had enough of 2K's BS and asked for help.

Our first cry for help was shot back with "This shit is too eldritch for me bro I'm tappin' out."

So we asked tomato for help.

And so the elder gods descended and actually made sense of the model.

So, tomato gave some insight. He was using 2.79 and as it turns out, despite the importer for 2.0.4 being designed for 2.8 and above, in 2.79, it actually LISTS the textures that are in the file in another window. like wtf. So that just made our job a lot easier.

So new knowledge in hand, we decided to start from scratch in 2.79... and so we take another step deeper into the abyss.

So, after eggman, we went with rratler. You might be able to tell he was the first real attempt at vertex positioning since his model is kinda jank around the shoulders.

And here we learned some valuable info. You see, to make posing easier, we decided to try exporting from the preview window for character entraces, since we wanted a T-pose as to not have the arm clip into the side of the body and make it easier to poseNormally, we'd just do it form the character creation screen.

And we learned something.

If you export from the character creation screen or in an actual match, you get a nice little egg and everything is fine, aside form the 2K jank of models being massive, away form the origin, multiple models, etc.

when you do it from the entrance preview screen, however...

The entire model turns inside out.

I have no fucking clue why.

so, the only way to fix this is to basically join the entire model together and then mass invert the whole thing. which loses out on the ability to 'easily' position (well, easlly for vertex positioning) the arms and stuff because they used to be separate parts but are now joined together. In the mean time, I can actually work with a correct looking model by turning on or off backface culling.

This doesn't actually fix it entirely though. Some of the inverted parts are actually facing the right way, or some parts are actually just one way for whatever reason... So we use a work around by hitting double sided on the model so those parts are no longer transparent from one direction.

From that point, the process is about the same as most others. Move and scale the model, rotate it 270 degrees because for whatever reason they import facing the wrong way, Go through the exceedingly tedious process of finding the texture for each individual part of the body, dropping it in photoshop, exporting it as a PNG, dropping it in paint.net, scaling it to 2048x 2048 and exporting as a DDS, going through the annoying process of scaling the UV maps to match the new full body texture I just made, importing the medic model, vertex positioning to match the medic model's position as close as possible, transferring over the weights, and then exporting.

There is... a lot I skipped over still. But those are probably the biggest issues that come to mind when working with the 2K models. Stuff like The UV textures, the doubles issue, how to actually rotate the arms to not look jank, figuring out how to fuck to select and position watamage's coat without looking incredibly jank, the eye texture issue, the fucking hair textures not actually working with the UV map, etc etc.
