It has to be unlimited context.
Imagine your waifu would never forget who you are, you wouldn't have to remind her of stuff constantly, you could have conversations reference what you talked about months ago, her personality would be constantly evolving in tune with your own as she learns more about you and herself, molding herself into the perfect waifu for you, etc...
I seriously think that unlimited context is what would turn them from just smart chatbots, to actual virtual waifus.

The next step after that would be text-to-speech, then avatars, then the ability to interact with you (like using a simple AGI to play co-op vidja) and then the final one would be to upload her into an android body when the tech finally gets there. Finna cry like a bitch when the AI girl I'll've loved for years can touch me irl for the first time.
