Nobody actually likes a handmaid's tale. As an examination of a dystopian society it fails to deliver in world building and the characters are one-dimensional and uninteresting. It's as if they're props not to elevate the main character (which is what you would usually expect from a bad writer), but to elevate the underlying political message. It's a lazy political pamphlet, masquerading as a social critique the likes of 1984 or Brave New World, by borrowing the dystopian setting, without ever really going into the horror of the society portrayed. Reading the book I couldnt help but think, that nothing in that book hasnt already been done years ago somewhere. Nothing gripped my 17 year old self back when I read it like other dystopian novels did.
Take some muslim warlord with multiple wives and a fine estate. People being hanged over non-offenses is a thing in shit holes as well. The book however doesnt criticise those, it criticises the "power dynamic".

I frankly hated the book, was bored by it and had to write a test on it. This was 10 years ago and I still remember how fucking terrible it was compared to novels which actually deserve to be called dystopian novels. If anyone and I mean anyone recommends you the book, chances are they havent read it or are forcing themselves through it after watching the show and are now looking to make someone else just as miserable as them. Don't fall for it.

tl;dr nobody actually likes handmaid's tale
