Long story short is that it's a way to play retro games that are 2+ players with little to no lag remotely with other people. It got it's bona fides from being a reliable way to play fighting games with rollback netcode. Notably (but somewhat overlooked) it has expanded to cover way more than just fighting games and arcade games in general. There are a ton of console games that could be played now as well.
The concept is, is that it would be a welcome alternative to the typical garbage 2-player "collab games" that every vtuber plays, i.e. it takes 2, a way out, etc.
